Monoprinting an abstract with chalkola chalk markers on a stretched canvas.

Experimenting with colour and mark-making on a stretched canvas that has been primed with black gesso. I haven't used this before so I hope you find this demo useful. I can really recommend working with the chalk markers and look forward to making a few more of these demos. All the plastic that you see me use in this demo is re-used many times, simply wipe clean when finished.

I will try to film a few simple exercise that would be of benefit if you are struggling to fill your time during this enforced social isolation.
This demo has been produced under the current lockdown situation here in the UK, and Like all other countries affected by this terrible virus, this is a worrying time for all of us, we can only hope that there is going to be a return to normality in the not too distant future.
I hope that in a small way this demo helps bring a little distraction from the situation, spreading a little colour in these dark times. I am sending best wishes to all of you, keep well and listen to all the expert advice, take care of those more vulnerable, and PLEASE remember, if you don't need to go outside STAY INDOORS.

Materials :
Stretched canvas 20" x 20"
Black gesso (This is applied with a jointing knife) You could also use a brush or soft sponge.
Chalkola chalk markers, various colours
Recycled plastic bag, scrap paper
Varnish spray to fix work when finished.

As the situation here in the states grows worse, I am in north Texas and cases are increasing just south and east of my community, I continue to report to work to help our employees cope, your videos are a definite release from the stress! This is a brilliant and inspired piece of art using materials one does not associate with fine art. I'm watching your videos in reverse order after discovering your channels, so I've already viewed your newer Chalkola demonstrations and find with each new demo, the process grows in appeal and inspiration. Aaaahhhhh........ Another great video and print. Black gesso background is very good choice. Again, your videos are so calming...your movements slow and mindful. Mesmerising! Great filming and editing, resulting in a lovely meditative rhythm. And thanks for the jointing knife tip. I’ve often used a broad silicone bladed tool in an effort to get the gesso good and smooth, but it doesn’t take long for the the tooth of the gesso to wear the silicone edge noticeably.

Thank you. I really like how this turned out, very organic and the process allows the work to evolve and grow unexpectedly. I am still working with the chalk markers and will continue to experiment with them, but I can really recommend trying them for yourself.

I bought a small selection of chalk markers, a few days ago. Unfortunaltley, some were unbranded and not a patch on the Uniball ones. I didn't have great success.with them. This is a very inspiring demo. I'm going to have another try in the next few days. I've got plently of time at home. Haven't we all?

I'm still finding my way with these but I really enjoy working with them. I do recommend trying the black gesso on canvas it has a good effect on the colours as they seem brighter.

That was so interesting to see the best I have seen you do. I saw why you went back and yet sometimes I thought it was done. I often find myself tarting the subject up to gain strength and beauty, but again that is all in our minds. Again so impressive and thanks a ton. I want to get started but paints are expensive, any ideas where to go and what about enamels, etc. Oils seem to take so long to dry, need tips lol...

If you use oil paint for mono printing or paint transfer that you see in some of the techniques I show in the demos the paint will dry fast so don't be put off by this. Start with just a few colours first, try charcoal for sketching which is an excellent medium to work with. Try to buy a few tubes of good quality paint rather than a big set of cheap paints, it will be worth it. Good luck, and thanks for watching.

Relaxing, awesome and inspirational - the best ways for times like this - you are a talented artist and magician. Is Gesso paint the best and only paint to use with the Chalkola markers?? Love the plastic bag process, have used this once before with acrylic paint and will use it again after watching this video.

Thanks, I always used a brush before then I saw this video. It's called a jointing knife but try a wallpaper scraper. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_9lrRyr_zW8.html It really works, it does depend on the brand of gesso sometimes a wet sponge is good to achieve a very smooth finish.

The paint transfer sheet is actually plastic. Try recycled bags.

Thanks, I spray them with an acrylic varnish when finished as for the archival qualities I'm not too sure about that although I think they will be similar to acrylic or water based paints.

I have an idea of the colours and I might think about a figure or a landscape, but I much prefer the work to progress by my own instincts, the hard part is knowing when to stop.

Hi Dan, after coming back home from Australia a year ago I was experimenting with chalk markers and made some dot painting on black paper, which was big fun. My unbranded chalk markers dry very quick. Interesting that yours are wet Long enough that you are able to print with the transfer foil. By the way, did you ever thought about making collages with the used transfer foils?

Hi Sabine, I hope things are well with you in Germany under these very worrying times for all of us. I really enjoyed working on this video and I'm starting to get used to working with the chalk markers. Because they are designed for using on blackboards It seems that using them on a black surface is much better. The markers do dry very quickly so I use small applications of colour to build up the composition. The plastic transfer sheet are fully re-usable so I will continue to work with them. I was asked to test these for a product review and had not used them before. I like them because of the range of techniques you can use them for. if you don't like what you did it is simple to wash off. Fix with a spray of varnish.

I would recommend using a spray as the brush would destroy the painting. When dry these chalk markers need fixing with just a light spray of an acrylic varnish.

I use Teespring, very easy to set up your own shop with a wide range of products. I think the prices are reasonable and the quality of the tee shirts is excellent. I also use Printful for a wider range of products.

I don't see why that would not work, you could also try emulsion paint or blackboard paint.
