The plastics industry figured out they can make more profit if they made people think of plastics "disposable" instead of something that was durable that could last for centuries as originally imagined.

that's quite honestly interesting, & a dope hypothesis bc for most people a lot of electricity that was developed yrs ago is so long-lasting then recent appliances, & electricity that is being developed now.

@Safwaan basically i've always observed that some of these appliances, & electronics from like an century or yrs ago depends if the person is still using them are just so versatile, & A1 compared to in this case appliances or most electronics that's being manufactured/developed rn.

I think it fits with the theme of tomorrowland that being a perpetually updating take on what is essentially the Jetsons.

I would like to visit well maintain Jetsons-ish attraction like that. The 2000s that have never been.

They should make an offshoot of Tomorrowland called Tomorrowon'tland, featuring all the old Tomorrowland attractions

@@Descriptor413 yeah yeah I love retro-futuristic themes. It’s a fun part about watching The Twilight Zone; seeing what “futuristic” was to people of past generations. I think Disney World becoming a weird tech demo convention with smart homes etc would be a pretty strange combo though; but keeping it old-school and sci-fy esque while dropping any corporate branding would be sweet.

I feel like that could be a fun premise for a science fiction story too. One that plays with TYE FUTURE as it was being predicted in the days of Gernsbeck and Asimov, the gleaming silver future we were promised in the 30s and with the Atomic Age.

We use plastic ABS pipe in plumbing.

Except it would still slowly break down through sun and water damage, the get washed into the ground and leave the soil full of microplastics. It wouldn't even last particularly long either. You can look at plastic that has been left outside for a long time to see how much it falls apart, like children's jungle gyms or old barrels. It starts to lose color, then gets brittle and falls apart

Also fire, as another commenter pointed out. Wouldn't want the house to catch and cover me in burning liquid goop

@@orinblank2056 they tried to burn it when it was time to remove it, and that didn’t really work!

@@patrickmarsh2538 the house had a concrete base, which is still there today! They had to use essentially cutting torches to even dismantle the plastic home attached to that base, so only the absolute strongest winds would be able to rip it off. TBH an American wooden home is also very light and blowable-seeming compared to the brick houses I’m accustomed to, but those wooden houses mostly do okay. I’d be interested in a test of situations where they get blown off their foundations (since that does happen to that construction sometimes), how the plastic construction compared. But AFAIK that was never done.

That sounds like some weird but oddly peaceful post apocalyptic thing

I have a hard time even imagining it. It's in our electronics, wiring, depending on the house water pipes, it's used with our foods and we ship things. It's so ubiquitous that it's up there with a strange reality where cotton was never domesticated.

There would be a lot more dead people. For all its faults, it is indispensable in medicine and modern medicine would not exist without it. Many devices would be far more dangerous as plastic housings make short circuits inconvenient rather than deadly in handheld devices like drills and cooking tools.

That would be so utterly different it would be almost impossible to imagine. It's easy to only think of plastic in terms of household products, but it is used so widely in so many critical industrial applications that lacking it would require an entire different understanding of technology. One good example is Hydraulics. Hydraulic cylinders rely on non-metallic seals to function. Usually these are made from a synthetic rubber or plastic (You can use leather or rubber but they degrade very fast and don't last very long). If there was no plastic hydraulic systems would be much much rarer and only used in very specialized applications. This has significant knock on effects. One example of that would be in heavy duty construction equipment, without reliable hydraulics most construction equipment would operate like it did in the 1930s. This would mean that not only are big buildings rarer, but everyday buildings are more expensive to build and buy. A society where housing is even more ridiculously expensive than today would look very different to ours socially and politically. And that's only one tiny aspect of this world. Cars and furniture would look radically different as they rely on hydraulic presses for manufacture. Airliners might not exist as large aircraft can't be controlled without cylinders to move the control surfaces and gear. Robots might not exist as we know them today. This one small element alone causes dramatic changes to the course of history.

Or walking onto a structurally compromised section that didn't feel too hot and having your foot / feet / entire self sink and get coated in the stuff

Would still probably be safer and give you more time to escape than a wooden house that catches fire, depending on the plastic being used.

@@darken2417 definitely wouldn't consider it an escape considering you are about to be so badly covered in melted plastic you probably won't be able to move far

@@kameronjones7139 Different plastics can have extremely different properties. Making it more resistant to flames or heat than wood is one of many quirks that can be applied to the development of materials. Unlikely you'd survive the fumes long enough to worry about being covered in plastic goo even if your house was made of literal water bottles.

I know you're going for a meme here but to be serious for a second it's because people make the connection that complexity equals futuristic which it isn't. It just means it's more annoying just like having a sink that moves up and down.

With home many convenient appliances were coming out in the 50s, people just expected more would come out for even the most niche uses

Imagine going to Ikea style showrooms and being able to order any rooms you want!

Modular homes do already exsit, they cost just as much as a normal woodframe home but can be made far stronger and longer lasting.

Weather straps should help with that

You'd still have to pay off the solar panels manufactor, shippment, & intstallation cost. So yeah, you'd still have bills each month for several years.

I do that with my clothes. I usually just keep the stuff on the line until I have accumulated the next wash and then I take off whatever is left.
