We got a little moisture the night before and the corn wasn't going through the combine very well, so we head to another farm to check the moisture. After we return to the farm, we prep for beans and even they were running over 15%!

Summer Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video 3 days a week at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RU-vid channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

You younger generation farmers will some day realize that farming with older tractors is always still the best 👍 stay away from the def, computerized cabs & modern technology because the future isn't always the best!! Love your videos 👍 & watching farming from another state... 😎

Ryan, I bet a lot of subscribers are like me - not farmers and fascinated with how farms work. One thing I really don't understand is how the combine drives through a corn field and corn kernels end up in the top. Someday I hope you'll explain how it works. The round bailer is also a mystery.

I love listening to Andrew explain stuff in such great detail, whenever he's in a video i know i'm going to learn something new about agriculture that i never knew before. His corn explanation about black layer and in the field was very interesting and something new to me. I do always enjoy when he makes an appearance in a video! Best of luck to you this harvest, i look forward to the upcoming video's and i'm rooting for you in the yield contest!

Glad to see you follow Gibb's rule #9. Always carry a knife. 2 is 1 and 1 is none is another rule to consider. Another fine video today Ryan. Drone footage was on top. Dad grunting on the gate door made me chuckle, knowing exactly how he felt at that moment. Been there, done that. Orville Redenbacher would be proud of your monster corn.

I really miss seeing all the corn harvest going on and seeing the farmers in field. I was raised in a farming community in northern Illinois not far from Potosi Wisconsin. I did do some grain cart duty after school and on weekends when I was in high school on some of my friends parents farms. All the farms I was raised around were dairy farms. But I understand those are farms of the past now. As they say nothing last forever. Really great drone footage Ryan and as always a very well done video. I could use a how farms hat works to proudly promote the channel where ever I go. Have a great day

We plant much thinner than you do because for us stalk strength is important . Our ears usually have up to .5 to .6 lb of dry grain. 28,000 of P1828 can make 300 bu. For WI you did a good job. In Texas I have been doing the NCGA contest for the past 50 years. Texas is not easy because 350 won last year.

You can have all the fancy planters you want and whatever else. If you don't have rain it won't work. Our summer last year was like yours this year. My uncle did 33 acres corn on corn. Last year it was over 320 average. This year now rain from middle of August until the second week of October. Same field did 180 on the high side.

Here in our part of Ohio we plant 66-70 day corn. The corn we just got done with today was running 15 to 13.8 percent at 268 or 281 bu/ac solid. Gosh the dust rolling of the combine is an impressive ammount. Id hate to have an air-cooled combine.

When you guys do start looking to update your combine, you should really take a look at one with a Hillco leveling system. It makes unloading on the go easy, not to mention easier on the chaffer and sieve by keeping the crop mat even.

I guess you guys need a ground pit/drive over grain deck/auger to get the full use of big red. But a little silo/funnel that the auger wagon could dump in over the grain auger would atleast get the little 4 wheel red wagon out of the equation 🙂

Combines are clever machines because they strip the jackets off and then strip the corn off the cob and put the clean corn in the hopper. A lot of thought went into that process.

Sounds like yall are in a similar boat we are in over in north central Indiana... Well, the beans went from too wet to "ready" in literally no time and have actually been done for a couple weeks already. Yields were lackluster in beans too. The corn though just refuses to dry down... We picked 80 acres, part of which was picked over almost two weeks ago because it was starting to fall down, and the yield wasn't there on it either-- too dry in summer, too wet in spring and so shallow rooted, which coupled with dry weather later on is not good. We've been piddling about the shop and doing other stuff and nosed into a field of corn that was planted not long after the 80 acres and didn't go far... moisture was STILL up about 26-27%... meter started out at 30% and lowest it dropped to on the yield monitor was 25%, and it bounced right back up. Getting set up to bin dry the corn as its harvested and then take it to the elevator... Just can't catch a break this year for sure! Later! OL J R :)
