Even though I hate the Rathalos, seeing how much he's grown, how much the series changed and how it affected him, and just how much care went into his design and the design of the Rathian puts a smile on my face. This is such a passionate series, and you can tell by just reading what the developers say in interviews.
Vipera217 Yeah it's not exclusive to Rathalos but it's still his theme (the official title is Roar / Rathalos), it even plays during his introduction cutscenes in 3U and 4U.
In the original MH game, none of the monsters had their own theme. It only had area themes. If you fought a monster in a specific area, you'd hear the theme of that area. It wasn't until MHF1 when we got the first ever monster to have its own theme; The Yian Garuga. From MH2 and onwards, Flagships, Elder Dragons, and just generally unique monsters would very often get their own theme that always played when fighting them. (Note: Fatalis and Lao-Shan technically had their own themes, but they were the only monsters fought in those areas back then, so I guess the area theme became their actual theme later on). Each area theme was designed with a specific monster in mind, however. The Forest & Hills theme was for Rathalos, the Jungle theme was for Rathian, the Desert theme was for Monoblos, the Volcano theme was for Gravios, and the Swamp theme was for Gypceros (of all the monsters to make a theme for...). The later games all had area themes designed for specific monsters as well (such as Deserted Island for Lagiacrus).
In MH2, they added the ability to use items while the weapon was drawn. However, they didn't want to make a new animation for using the item, it seems, so to avoid the hunter stabbing themselves in he face when chugging a potion, they made them hold the sword in their other hand. That's what I think the reason is, anyhow.
I like that the SnS is left handed, there aren’t many left handed characters in games. Makes me sad that they made Link right handed, and I’m not even left handed.
I remember playing Monster Hunter World, my introduction into the series, and seeing its icon just zoom around the forest. I was scared shitless whenever it would pop up, but ever since I conquered it, those memories are now fond ones.
Rathalos also had his fair share appearing in other games and I don't mean as Easter eggs or cameos. He appeared in Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, Final Fantasy 14 (and at the same time Monster Hunter World got one of their monsters called Behemoth) and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and in all of them you get to fight it! Not only he's the king of the skies but apparently master of time and space too XD
Honestly... That gunner from this very first opening movie seems like a real dick. He just hired some rookie hunters, told them that slaying a Rathalos would be a walk in the park rewarded with fame and glory and then just uses them as a bait so he can get a clear shot on the Wyvern...
Rathalos is cool, but he really ruined his reputation with me in MHFU with the incessant flying around the map while you twiddle your thumbs. Then he somehow managed to be even more obnoxious in Tri when he practically never hit the turf. The mission in MHFU where you fight both Raths is great for money farming though!
I love how Rathalos is basically just a fire breathing dragon: what pretty much anyone and everyone would expect just from the word "dragon". And yet, Rathalos means so much more than just that. ... Though I wish Dreadking didn't exist. I hate being the one in randoms that always has to break his wings and then spam flash bombs every thirty seconds. xp
I love how there's that picture of Tokuda-san just covered in lizards, because that is exactly the type of person I'd expect to go on to direct a Monster Hunter game
6:20 the two old rivals, King of the Skies and Lord of the Seas. I'm so happy that Monster Hunter Tri was my first game, even if it did have a lot of weapons and monsters missing compared to other titles.
Watching that Tri intro back makes me want to cry... I remember coming home every day, booting up the Wii after school and every single time, I watched that intro all the way through. It was a fantasy for me, it was a world I felt I belonged in and I put SO many hours into that game. Can't wait to do the same with World.
I fully understand this. I never was able to get a monster hunter game after tri, but it's the game that got me into the series. I have well over 500hrs into the game before they cut the servers.
You guys are speaking my language, put nearly 500 hours into Tri and could never get a console to play the others but with a PS4 and MHWorld coming out now I am ready to put another 1000 hours in. Already preordered xD
LITE Gold Ceadeus was spongy, but much more fun than the regular Ceadeus. Although, if the Ceadeus is your first Elder Dragon/HUGE monster fight, oh boy, you're in for a magical experience :D
Nido Hime yeah, both the rates were just awful looking. Those giant, goofy teeth, square faces, long necks, and spindly bodies were just so disproportionate and cartoony looking. The most recent designs are such a vast improvement.
Notice in monster hunter world his Roar/scream (when enrage or grunts) is different unlike the MH freedom unite to MH4 I wish they kept his scream...or Roar
DGKsoulsofcats Yeah, both Rathalos and Rathian's roars are different for some odd reason. Not a fan of Rathalos nor Rathian, but one thing I always liked bout' them was their roar, which is a very menacing and beast like roar. Kinda sad that changed it in World. Doesn't sound as menacing nor beast like IMO.
I love the concept and design for Rathalos, but I hate fighting him. He’s just annoying. From the backstep into a fireball to the heat-seeking unavoidable poison claws, he's got a lot of bullshit attacks that you really can’t dodge. Dreadking is everything that’s wrong with Rathalos taken up to eleven. Rathian, on the other hand, is one of my favourite monsters, and Dreadqueen is my favourite of the Deviants. She’s a lot more fun to fight and the difficulty with her feels real, unlike with Rathalos where a lot of it feels artificial.
I feel like that's because Rathian spends more time on the ground as well, so you actually have a fair few chances to hit her if you're not using a big or ranged weapon. Meanwhile, Rathalos spends a ton of time in the sky so it's more difficult to hit it.
Rathalos is about waiting for him to attack first, and attacking him during the openings after his attacks, after you learned what his attacks are like. It's perfect to fight against.
The only reason I take longer to take down those pesky dreadking Los it’s because they ALWAYS have to change area every SINGLE minute, they just love to waste your time
im really enjoying these vids on specific monsters GaijinHunter, please keep them coming. For me the highlights are the back story and design changes that you talk about. Good job buddy!
Yes! Finally a monster feature for my favourite monster. Ever since I got into Monster Hunter, I fell in love with this Wyvern. I always got his armor set, always capped out Greatsword, and would always kill the strongest Rathalos variation before moving onto the newest released game. The king of the Skies has always had a special place within my connection to gaming. His influence has even effected my perception of other games, causing me to think "Hey, this wyernic dragon reminds me of a Rathalos". Now to await Monster Hunter World, where I can once again challenge this majestic wyvern in all of my nerdy gaming personality. Let the hunt carry on fellow hunters!
Goldenaries 08 I have this same feeling...but with tigrex from monster Hunter freedom 2 psp, tigrex was the flag of 2 and after 2 was unite and dam that narga oooooof
Playing MH since tri and tried some older games for psp for the last 10 years and rathalos is constantly someone I pay huge respect towards. I'm always some time later at a point where he isn't that much of a thread anymore but he still manages to uphold this respectable aura around himself. Really love him :)
Here is my story about Rathalos. So my brother was the one who introduced me to the game since he was playing it on our PSP (MHF). So I kinda like made a new character for myself then decided to play it. When I reached the 4 star urgent which is the Rathalos, my brother told me that he hasn't gotten past him yet. So as someone who is in grade school at that time (I can't even remember how I got that far in the game lol), Rathalos was like THE MONSTER in this game for me. I think it spanned days maybe even weeks of carting and abandoning quests before I was finally able to beat him. I literally screamed and celebrated when Rathalos finally fell. As far as I can remember, it was the first time I felt so happy after slaying a monster. I also think this was the moment that I knew that I fell in love with the series :)
I would like to see the rival to the rathalos, the lagiacrus, since the recent games that came out now has cemented, especially in stories, that the lagiacrus is rival to the rathalos. I would love to see the video on that monster
Xragon MH nope, the lagiacrus was made as a direct antithesis to the rathalos, from the attributes, design details, to how they are viewed as a whole. the titles and certain missions either in monster hunter or in MH stories make a clear distinction that the lagiacrus is the rival to the rathalos. sergios and astalos are made in the vain be creatures that are the same in skill, but never a real rival
well it kinda best summarized in the titles of the two beasts. rathalos being "king of the skies" and lagiacrus being "lord of the seas" and I could get how the sergios could be made to be a rival of sorts, but the lagiacrus is made to be everything against what the rathalos is, especially in contrast on weaknesses. also they are some of the first monsters to have 3 different subspecies, (tho not certainly the only ones or the last) they are also some of the few that have subspecies comparable to elder dragons in threat.
rath has only one subspecies the other is a rare one the silver rathalos and ofcourse the rare species are as strong as elders (I do know that) but did u know seregios has great fire resistense its back can only be hurt with flames and other parts won't hurt much which rathalos also can only be hurt in the back having 15% taking more damage there and yes seregios dont have much of subspiecies but they do have same amount of fire resistense to the same spot which raths rare species takes 5% damage in two parts but I wont pit a seregios against a rare species and yeah the lagi has a title opposing raths title but I dont blame u if u say that, capcom did make another flying wyvern as a rival which doesn't happen with most creatures it happens with other creatures
Whats really interesting, the the Original MH logo with the wyvern on the logo. That wyvern is not Rathalos. But rathian. You can clearly tell by the longer chin spike and fuzzy back.
The Monster Hunter 4 concept trailer is actually very different to the actual game. The trailer is clearly trying to imply a seamless environment, but the areas shown got split up and changed into parts of the Ancestral Steppe, Everwood, and Sanctuary. The Tigrex also chased the hunter over land while the Rathalos pursued him on the cliff's edge and clearly attacked the Rathalos, features which wouldn't be seen until World or haven't yet been implemented. It also portrays mounting as seamlessly jumping on the monster's back - not at all how it worked in 4 with random occurrence on hit and cut to black. And of course the climbing knife attack is way too weak to reliably flinch anything and flying monsters don't even hover within range to try.
Sean it was a "proof of concept" sequence. Of course it would be a little bit different to the final game. Maybe the 3ds couldn't handle what they envisioned so it was toned down for the final game We wouldn't see exactly how it was in that video until MH world
It makes sense. I remember hearing that MH World was in development since the original MH4's release. In other words, 4th Gen MH to MH World is sort of like what 6th Gen Pokemon was to the 7th. They tested these ideas in separate games, see what works and what doesn't, then use that to improve the future game(s).
Sean dude we got 4 ultimate not 4, 4 is for Japan they are slightly different, also the concept completed most of what they showed: mounting, breaking structures, jumping from land to structure, rathalos getting damaged by the knife (btw this strat works with rath I've done it before and it also applies to khezu as well). They have done as much as they could have possibly done.
Haru17 Still, every feature in the trailer was present in the game individually. Tigrex/you could climb certain surfaces. Rathalos could accidentally attack another monster in it's efforts to get at you. There are areas that drop after heavy attacks, there are objects that get destroyed. There are areas that tip after heavy attacks, you can flinch monsters out of the air. There's mounting. The list of showcased elements goes on. Of course, everything happening back to back in the same area is absurd. But that's why it's a proof of concept.
There is nothing more satisfying then landing and air kill on this guy. It literally feels like you take him out of his throne and just destroy him. My friends and I actually coined the term "dethroning" or "dethroned" to describe killing a flying wyvern in air simply because of how often we ended up air killing Rathalos, "taking him out of his throne in the sky". We still use this vernacular to this day, don't think I'm going to Tire of it, either.
And now, it's a boss in smash. Now I suppose I'll wait and see if Monster Hunter fans want a Hunter to be playable, or since Ridley was "too big" request for the Rathalos itself to become playable.
Ah yes Rahalos my favorite. I remember pissing people off online in Monster Hunter on the PS2 when I used my rathalos plates for my Rathalos + Armor. Everyone went with Fatalis armor which was just black rathalos armor.
Ok so in Mh4u there's these two quests: One you fight Silver Rathalos, other is Gold Rathian. Ring of the Silver Sol and Ring of the Golden Lune. I don't know about the japanese version, but in the American version, Ring of the Silver Sol is where you fight Gold Rathian, and Ring of the Gold Lune is where you fight Silver Rathalos.
Jamison ...Too bad that in World, he stays airborne for an even LONGER period of time when you hunt it + more ways of f*ck*ng your sh*t up while flying + faster and more aggressive overall.
Ok, the three baby Rathalos and Rathien just killed me with cute overload. May not be so cute if you were the breakfast mommy Rathien was carrying, but still. 😅
They've been awesome fights since I started playing in Tri. It just feels so good to dodge that tail spin attack, roll out of the way of Rathian's backflip, sever, and flash bomb drop them from the air.
I wouldn't, I don't like how the horns look. Old players are already hyped about the game so the cover doesn't matter, new players see a giant red wyvern that looks like a fantasy dragon.
He will always be my favorite monster of all time. I love always hunting him. Gives my nostalgia from the very first monster hunter. His design I fell in love with it. Red and black are my favorite colors and he fits everything for me. Hail to the king!!
Not every new monster, if you want some of the gameplay for MH:W he seems like the first big boss of the forest area. He wrecks everyone there or they just straight up run when he shows up.
Pokarot Ik.But he rules because Anjanath,Great Jagras and Kulu Ya Ku havent got wings, and Pukei Pukei and Tobi kadachi are afraid of him because they are smaller than it
Superman dive out right before it claws you or run/superman dive straight beneath it before it do the attack Can be pretty tricky to pull if you don't know the telltale of it or if you happen to be unlucky enough to get stunned by its wind/roar/attack
They made male and female iterations of rath, taken from the word "wrath" meaning directed fury. Rathalos meaning male "rath" and Rathian meaning female "rath."
The los suffix doesn't mean anything in english, but in German it means the same thing as "less," meaning without (eg: hopeless). But in latin languages, "los" is a male suffix and "ian" is a female suffix.
My most fav and my most hatered Monster from the very first Monster Hunter on PS2... P.S I know it weird butt im gonna miss my Prey Armor Velociprey Genprey Giaprey and Ioprey lol... Not my fav but i like them lol... Thank for the vid...
This the reason why I love Rathalos I mean he's already been crossovered in different games and everytime you see a Large Red Wyvern flying in the sky.... You know that its the world's Iconic Dragon of all time.
An old friend. I have a harder time fighting him nowadays than I did back in the Freedom days though... Either I got worse as an MH player somehow, or they've changed him enough to make it more difficult to fight him.
T C I think it might be something along those lines. Perhaps the introduction of hunter arts in MHGen led me to start making dumb decisions. Part of it might also be the fact that, well, this isn't the PSP anymore. Maybe I was just better when I did the claw than I am now with this lock-on stuff.
Sir Caco I actually stopped playing gen for awhile I played 4u again. I was getting my ass kicked at first but eventually got good again. I've also noticed people online are more likely to cart in 4u then gen.
T C Part of that is people in 4U rarely come prepared for G rank hunts: max potions, 10 potions, 10 mega potions, nullberries, etc. I also noticed a bad habit that a lot of people would do in 4U is they simply don't heal. They'll be at under 30%, given an opportunity where a monster is chasing someone else, and they still chase it down where the monster turns around and they promptly get killed.
My favorite Monster Hunter was honestly the one with the underwater fighting element added to it. So hard to master the transition to that terrain but it was fun.
EdgyZiggy9538 When Khezu starts to spamming that "Chidori Nagashi" omg, it's so fucking annoying, mainly when you are using a slow weapon like GS, that you don't have much time to dodge, Khezu is also tank as f*ck... But i don't know, i think i hate Rathalos more than Khezu... When you need to drink life potions and Rathalos don't stop flying and throwing fireballs... And when you want hit his head and he don't stop running over you like you're a piece of shit
Unpopular opinion here: rathalos and rathian can choke on their next herbivore prey and die. The fight is not very hard but downright disgusting. Dashing at you without warning, roar back jump fireball combo, endless flight(especially before MH3) the GPS homing poison kick of rathalos, and the double poison tail spin(she will chase you down and adjust her attack direction) of rathian really leave a sour taste in my mouth
*FINALLY!* Someone here who loves Seregios as much as I do! That thing was awesome, especially its fighting style. It behaves more like a hunter rather than your typical monster. Fighting it is always fun to me. Rathalos and Rathian can go get hunted to extinction by Deviljho for all I care.
I remember the Rathalos kicking my ass back when I was new to MH and playing MH Tri. I only used the Lance and wore my Royal Ludroth armor for too long. I couldn’t get past the Low Rank Rathalos at the time! XD But I’ve improved so much since then! Now I take the Rathalos on like a pro!
True. Rathalos is the punching bag of the large Wyvern family. Lagiacrus butts heads with it, Seregios and its species are regularly known to injure (and maybe even kill) Rathalos and Rathian, Astalos also wrecks its shit.
