Monster Hunter Freedom Unite was my very first MH game, so when I saw THIS thing in the opening cutscene, I immediately felt like I made a mistake. Tigrex terrified me, and when it decided to barge in on my quest to hunt for Popo Livers (I think that's what the quest was), I did nothing but run for my life. I can't even remember my first victory against this thing, I think I blocked that memory because of how tense the fight was. Huh.
Hazama Terumi My introduction to the series was MHFU too, and though there might be harder, more aggressive monsters in later encounters, I had gained enough confidence and experience to keep my mellow by that point. Tigrex came at me like a wall of charging death when I was still green. Even when it was time to properly face him it felt utterly overwhelming. I remember clear as day when I beat him, just because I was so damned surprised. I had been picking away at him for what felt like ages with my Eager Cleaver, barely avoiding some attacks and proving less lucky with others. We were both in shit shape by that point- my potion stocks were demolished and the big bastard was tail-less and battle-worn all over. He had been enraged for a while, and every moment felt like a fight just not to cart- getting an occasional cut in on the sly, but mostly just avoiding the oncoming death. I saw an opening and went in for a single overhead strike on his skull, prepared to role out of his next attack- but he died. Just died. I stood there shocked for a minute as I processed it all, realizing he'd not even tried to head back to his nest. The big raging bastard put everything he had into trying to wipe me off the face of the earth. That's the moment that all the terror I had felt from the damn thing over the course of my play time found complete and utterly validation. Tigrex is a monster if ever there was one.
Tigrex is easily one of my favorites as it reminds me of my days on freedom unite with my best friends, first struggling to defeat Tigrex then eventually growing to have no problems with it. Along side Lao Shun Lung and Shen Gaoren
Is he really coming to World?! Of so that's got me hyped to shit! I started MH at Freedom, then Freedom 2 (UK) and Unite. Tigrex was the first REAL monster I fell in love with. The rage mode is amazing and a lot of fun. Tigrex tought me to be patient with hunts and try a different weapon. He's going to look amazing in World, can't wait to see the armour and weapon sets. Imagine Tempered Tigrex!
Whenever TIgrex is the topic, I like to tell my little personal story. Shortly after I bought MHF2, I found myself fighting this guy. And I just could not kill him. I struggled for WEEKS. But then, it finally happened. I killed my first Tigrex. But he wasn't done with me. The day after I killed him, I brought my PSP with me to school, to show my friend who brought me into Monster Hunter in the first place, that I indeed was victorious. But upon opening my PSP's "protection case" I noticed a crack. A big one. Right in the middle of my screen. Turns out there was some loose coin or stone (I don't remember exactly) in the case with it which bounced onto the screen everytime it moved around in my backpack. This was the first and last time I brought any console with me to school. So already pissed I start up my PSP and as you might imagine, the whole screen was cracked. I couldn't see anything. Tigrex, being defeated by my sword after weeks of fighting, gave me one last middle finger by breaking my PSP screen. I obviously got it fixed a few days later, but I still hold a deep hate-love relationship with Tigrex to this very day because of that. I wear his skin with pride in every game he's been in so far. And I deeply hope that I get another chance to do just that in MHW.
Same except for me it was the dual tigrex quest and around that time I had been playing with a team but i had moved so I didn't have help. I struggled and struggled with it until one day I gave up for a few months I came back after getting a new breath of fresh air for the series with unite. I attempted once again but this time I was successful and I had slaughtered them both. I had never had a more love or hate relationship with this monster.
I was the opposite. This dude got me so scared I killed Kut-ku for MONTHS until I worked up the confidence to kill this guy. Once I did I felt a new door opened, and I went full frenzy. Me and fought for MONTHS longer than Kut-ku a mountain of Tigrexs can be made. I loved this guy to death. He's fear that pushed you to be brave.
First time hunting Tigrex: Me: so is this some kind of tiger wyvern or something? Doesn't sound so bad. *hunt begins* *watches Tigrex intro* Me: okay it's big so what? Tigrex: *sees me* I'm coming for that booty. 45 minutes of raging later: Me: WILL THIS THING JUST DIE? Tigrex: *flees to nest* Me: Alright it's heading to its nest, I'd better fol- *timer runs out* Me: FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUCK.
Yeah, but gunners had an out, which if abused made it much easier to deal with. Area 6 of the Snowy Mountain has that elevated area(between the paths to 5 & 7) which if you were on, Tigrex would only attack from a distance via the boulder throw attack(which could be dodged via strafing). So you can just sit up there whenever it's in 6 and safely attack him. First gen Desert, Jungle, Swamp & 2nd gen Volcano all had areas like that that could be abused.
+Ben Hobbs if it was a charge blade that must have been something 4u or after right? tigrex is easier after Tri because before that he gave maybe 3 openings during his moves which was after his charges leaving him on the opposite side of the area from you
My first Tigrex encounter was MH4U's story mode, where the first Tigrex you face is *frenzied.* I did manage to beat it on my first attempt, but I did have to play super cautious ... then of course there was that moment when it actually goes frenzied and Guildmarm tells you the Congalala dung is about to hit the fan...
improvcomedy14 i dont. Do you remember him in the opening vid in freedom 2 or mh4? He goes rage mode theres no escaping. Can you imagine tigrex chasing you all over the map.
+phillipfavors2001 since it seems world is going to add a bit of verticality i think tigrex would be great for it. its in the previous games as well but think about tigrex climbing a cliff like a bat out of hell coming for you. as well as knocking you off ledges like a pro
I remember one of the openings of Monster Hunter chasing a hunter carrying a large ruby stone or something. Yeah if he was in world that cinematic would be real.
Tigrex holds a special place in my heart. He was my first wall as a hunter back in MHFU when I was just a kid. I spent several days trying and failing. Fighting him really made me improve at the game and when I finally beat him I jumped and screamed all over the place. It's one of those MH experiences that I will never forget.
Jho has been in every game since tri, correct? My first MH was 3U, so while I was still learning the game I started high rank. (you all see where this is going) I begrudgingly pick the annoying but easy Crimson Quadropecko expecting it to call another Rathian or Rathlos, but noooooo. I hear a new roar, then suddenly the music changes and I see a giant green T-Rex charge at me, do a little jump and begin to eat my face off! Though two max potions, ten mega potions, ten potions, and even an ancient potion. The Jho ended up killing the Quadropecko...
I remember my first big wall in MH4U being the quest where you had to fight two frenzied Tigrex. The only way I could do it was by swapping out my usual kinsect glaive for the Gore Magala great sword and learning from youtube videos about understanding the best place to stand, what attacks to expect etc. that quest taught me a lot about learning a monster! If he's in World, we will literally be playing the MH4U opening cinematic. So exciting!!!
I had the same experience in MHFU with the quest ´land of tremors`, in witch i had to put away my trusty true devil slicer a and learn to use a great sword
I personally hate fighting Tigrex. Mostly because of the endless attacking and low recovery times, it sure trips up your "rhythm" of playing Monster Hunter. That's the reason why I like the Charge Blade so much. I appreciate its shield because of Tigrex. Where Evasion +1-3 may fail because of attacks sometimes being kinda unexpected and almost too fast to react to and hitboxes all over the monster, the shield made me feel save. Also it helped me learning Guard Pointing a bit as well. Molten Trigrex tho can suck some mad pickle.
i always love Tigrex because of simplicity, it looks very intimidating with it's bright color, massive jaw and claws, and on top of it, it just never stops charging at you. Tigrex is brutal and simple, and it's my favorite monster of all time from the first time he killed me in that popo tongue quest.
Wait it’s technically a sauropod?, you know, a family of large elephant legged long necked herbivores, yet it shares numerous features with theropods,.. Yea ok, that’s fine, THATS TOTALLY OK
It's easier to just invent new classification systems for these things than trying to fit them into existing categories. The tigrex could be neither sauropod nor theropod. The anatomy of most MH wyverns is too aberrant to be considered dinosaurian.
The Brutes more closely resemble Theropods than Tigrex/Narga do, other than the skull of course.... But also not Sauropods, considering the hind legs of Sauros are always longer than the forelimbs.
You fight with a sword longer than your body that has to be impossible to actually pick up and swing repeatedly against a giant tiger themed wyvern trex with a bipedal cat that can talk. Logic was surrendered a long time ago, my friend.
Also Zinogre is all in all just a cool monster. Great design, cool wolfy armor (skills can be meh), and easily one of the faster paced fights in all of Monster Hunter, especially with all the chain combos it does of different moves that it has. Also who doesn't want a Chopper motorcycle for a gun! And a fucking guitar to smash with.
Ahh... While I was playing, I went with the quest sinking feeling. I find it weird at first over to why the paths are blocked. Then the cutscene with the Popos. I was very curious what the heck is happening till I realize a massive wyvern pops out of nowhere and roars and the fight began with running the fuck out. I decided to fight it but it was too op.
Sweet, one of my top 5 favorite monsters. Now please put him in MHWorld capcom, I need to see him in HD. Not to mention i'd be cool to see how a crazed wyvernic esque dinosaur would interact with the various walls and ceilings of the environment. Moreover, it's kinda weird to see an animal like Tigrex in the suborder Sauropod. It mostly consisted of dinosaurs like Brachiosaurus and Camarasaurus. I somewhat see how he fits, with the elongated neck and tail, but bus legs don't seem pillar like enough to give off a Sauropod like look. Not to mention Sauropods were herbivores...
It's interesting to see MHW introducing so many new monsters. I honestly thought they would recycle a lot more. I'm sure we will get some sort of "Old Favorites" Type of DLC where the most popular old monsters that didn't make it into MHW from the start are gonna get implemented. Tigrex, Zinogre maybe even Lagiacrus or the Hermitaur :D
I remember my friend, upon me first entering High Rank in MHGen, took me on a Tigrex hunt. I took one look at it, was trying to figure out how it would fight, then it just charged at me. I’m just glad I had just come off of grinding the Glavenus for its armor so I managed to react in time to dodge it. After that, I remember being caught off guard when it screamed and actually hurt me. That’ll always be one of my most remembered hunts
My fav monster ever. I remember how hard it was to beat it and how happy I was when I finally did. A few days later I could take on two at the same time. Monster Hunter - what a brilliant game!
My introduction to the series was MHFU, and though there might be harder, more aggressive monsters in later encounters, I had gained enough confidence and experience to keep my mellow by that point. Just to throw it in there, Sauropods aren't merely four-legged animals. They're specifically a group of dinosaurs known for having long necks and a herbivorous diet. From what I've heard, many of the wyverns are actually lumped up as "Wyvern Footed" - likely an offshoot of the Theropod suborder in which all the carnivorous dinosaurs hail from.
"we're gonna be doing a season pass were we gonna be releasing quests were you hunt flagship monsters from previous monster hunters on Monster hunter world for only 29.99!" - capcom 2017
Tigrex has always been my favorite monster. I started MH on Freedom 2 and I felt like a real hunter when I finally solod him. I hope he makes a return in World cause I would live to see how he fights in the new engine. #Tigrex4World
While I love how many new monsters will be in world, I feel like we still need to have the return of some staple monsters like the Tigrex, Zinogre and Brachidios. Hopefully we may get to see that one trailer that will showcase their return, but until then, we can only be patient as we are about 75 days out from world.
After hearing that roar at the end of the icebourne trailer veterans know that was indeed the roar of the tigrex but were not a 100% sure we’ll know after the release of icebourne in the future
Who could ever forget meeting a Tigrex while doing a stress free, relatively safe quest such as "Gather Popo Tongues". It's just the freakin' second Village Elder Quest to boot. When all you have experience for at this point is knowing what Herb and mushroom gathering points look like and the basic of basics in using your weapon, a tier 1 Bone weapon too! Then all of the sudden, you're being chased by a monster that caused you to fall to your death in the intro!!! I wished that they did the same kind of experience in World, when you met a Rathian for the first time. It lacked that "impending doom" feeling, when it's part of the story that the Rathian will just ignore you.
I like Tigrex, but boy oh boy does Capcom have a problem with fully explaining their monsters (i.e. how Brute T can damage you physically with roars, how Molten T makes exploding dust, etc.)
Hey man I just wanted to let you know that these videos are really interesting. Not only because you are covering the monsters people like but also the lore and history behind the monster and its design. It really makes the hard work by the designers be known and we'll also know more about the process from your translations. Great job keep it up proud of ya
Love this series! How about Barroth? For some reason I really enjoyed that monster in MH3U, It kinda makes it more special since it's not in Generations anymore...
I used to love in my first games and beyond how Tigrex was always the signature monster at the start of the game, just after finishing the tutorial. I learned a harsh lesson in not trying to kill the tigrex with my starting armor in MH Freedom Unite and Freedom 2. Always a fun monster to fight because of it's simplicity mixed with difficulty.
*Me*: yeah!!! First time hunting tigrex!!! Im ready im ready im ready!!!!! *tigrex*: !!!!!! **charge at me like it was ready to devour my soul** *me*: no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no!!!!!!!!!! **turn off 3DS** I never hunted that thing alone btw
I wondering something about Tigrex actually. Do you guys play Dino Crisis 1 & 2??? Is Tigrex actually reference to Capcom Dino Crisis? Its because he's a Rex & Try to hear his music carefully, Its clearly Dino Crisis Music Reference!!!!
Classifying it as Sauropod is idiotic. Sauropods are long-necked herbivores like Diplodocus or Brachiosaurus. It should be a Theropod, it's name is even inspired by the T-Rex.
Fun hunt on mh4u: frenzied Yian Garuga. Me: no biggie, i have lance TIGREX GETS IN THE AREA AND START CHARGING Yian tries to poison me I get stuck in a corner The 2 of them join forces against poor little me. Stamina out. Oh fck....3 consecutive carts. Pro lancer and hr999.
I love how Tigrex's head movements are like a big dumb bird. Mouth agape, look to the left, tilt head, in a u shape action look to the right, tilt head again, head back to the middle, and OM-NOM-NOM-NOM!!! P.S. Would love to see Nargacuga next!
Sauropods are the longnecked dinosaurs. Like Apatosaurus, Diplodocus, etc. Tigrex doesn't really look much like those. I guess it's a really far removed cousin.
When I first fought Tigrex in MH4U, I fucking hated it. It felt so cheap and unfair. Too difficult I screamed at my 3DS. Now it's one of my favorite fights haha. It made me "git gud" even though I had already solo'd basically everything in 3U. And you know what? For a simple dinosaur monster, it actually looks fairly unique and iconic.
Guys! Guys! What if some of our favorite monster ARE returning, they're just keeping it for a surprise when we play the game. (Btw, do a video about Rathalos. He's my main monster. I'll be glad to see a vid about him.)
The 1st tigrex I hunted was in 4U. I was screaming for my life the whole time. As I didn't know its moves, I kept my distance for any chances to attack back. Like how I've been hunting when starting the game. Boi I was wrong.
Tiggy-wiggy! So glad to see my second-favorite monster get a feature! To me, there's just something so awesome about Tigrex's simplicity. "How do I beat this little guy smacking that stick on my head? I know, I'll run him over!" "Well, he's pretty far away, so trampling him might be obvious... I know, I'll punch the ground so hard, I fling a boulder at him!" I think it's pretty safe to say that, if for some reason Pickle doesn't make it into MHW, Tigrex is absolutely a prime candidate and/or substitute. Seeing Tigrex showing his being a "Hunter" of sorts would be so amazing, as you run for your life throughout the map, heh.
I remember when Tigrex was frustrating for me in MH4U, but mostly because I mained DB and I couldn't really dodge the running attacks without sheathing my weapon. Personally, I like Brute Tigrex better because of more room to attack when it does its roars and I used its set in the game, and used its armor. Thankfully the former is much easier in Gen, but keep me away from Apex Tigrex. ;-; As for Stories, I greatly favored Brute and had used one for quite a while. So overall, I can appreciate the TIgrex. I'm interested in seeing Yian Garuga next.
Oh wow. I probably have to summarize my story with this particular monster. I started MH with Freedom Unite (back in 2012) and Tigrex almost made me quit the game entirely. Super noob at not knowing anything about the game mechanics. Not having anyone to help/guide me. It was insane. But I'm glad I didn't give up and this is one of my favorite Capcom franchises (plus the thousand of dollars I threw at Capcom with merchandise lol). Tigrex is right up there as my fav monster with Jinouga, Nargacuga and Valstrax. This was an awesome video and I'd love for you to make more in the future. Thank you and happy hunting!
I know the recognized pronunciation of his name is "Tee-grex" but I'm still calling him Tie-grex. xD I have been since I first Encountered him when I was a kid. him and Nargacuga are my favorites, it was nice to see his Brute subspecies come to World too, Hope we'll see a Nargacuga sub or rare species too!
I find it odd that Tigrex would be within the suborder of sauropods seeing as all sauropods, to modern knowledge, were long necked, bulky, massive herbivores, like Larinoths. It would make more sense, given it's physiology, that Tigrex belongs to the other Saurischian family of theropods, which were the only dinosaurs with carnivorous dentition, and included such famous predators as Carnotaurus, Allosaurus, Spinosaurus, Giganotosaurus, and of course, Tyrannosaurus rex. Clear examples of theropods in the MH series proper include Brute Wyverns such as Deviljho, Glavenus, and Anjanath. Such animals are far closer in morphology to Tigrex, so it seems unlikely to me that Tigrex would be closer relatives of sauropods. Then again, I'm trying to apply real world prehistoric taxonomy to a fantastical fictional video game setting that is home to animals that can spit fireballs, create blizzards, spread rage inducing viruses, and make you explode just by punching you, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In terms of the actual pronunciation, I'm aware that Capcom said that it's "Tig-rex", but I've always pronounced it as "Tai-grex." Because to me, it's more natural and it sounds cooler. But I'm surprised by the amount of people who get so emotional and butthurt over this. At the end of the day, it's a fictional creature, it's not real.
im so glad that i can finally fight G Rank Tigrex in MHXX because i know that's one of few monsters i totally know, movesets, tactics and all.... then comes the actual fight... never underestimate G Rank
With all due respect, being a "sauropod" has nothing to do with being a quadroped. Its the number of toes. Despite being on all four (but only because it's the fusion of a tiger and a t-rex) tigrex only has 4 toes, but only uses 3 dominantly to walk. Making it a therapod.
Tigrex was legitimately my biggest fear in MHP2 back in the days when I was playing an MH game for the first time. Defeating it felt like such an accomplishment. It was truly a great flagship for MHP2. (Now it is indeed a cute creature to me lmao)
Great video! However Tigrex cannot be a Sauropod. That would be lumping Tigrex with peaceful, long-necked leaf-eaters. I do like the idea of making an evolutionary tree for the monsters though. I have heard that wyverns like the Tigrex, which have powerful front limbs that double as wings, rather than just wings for flight, are more primitive. It's interesting looking at the different kinds and seeing which are similar and might be related somehow.
Hi Gaijin! You went into the Tiger / Lion thing with Rathalos's Japanese name, but you didn't mention that Rex is latin for king as well - so they're Leoleus = Lion King, and Tigrex = Tiger King.
My best Tigrex moment was in 4 Ultimate. I was using the Narjarala Longsword and Tigrex did his spin in place attack. I had just down swiped and then I did the poke attack right as Tigrex's tail came back around and it cut it off.
