I felt the need to produce a video on the specifics of Monstera obliqua as a surprising number of people do not understand it’s true rarity…
This video breaks down into the following categories. BUT I strongly advise you to watch the whole video rather than simply looking at the differences or you will not leave with a true understanding of Monstera Obliqua.
The Monstera obliqua featured is Peruvian form and has been verified by Mick Mittermeier. It is a genuine specimen.
Please do not spam Mick’s instagram with pictures of your adansonii with a hopeful identification of obliqua.

A quick word on Monstera Epipremnoides to avoid some of the confusion: it is also a super rare plant and will not accidentally be sold in shops. Mick Mittermeier himself has had some trouble sourcing these kinds of plants. I apologise if I've made people think they might have Epipremnoides- it cannot be found in shops! You have Adansonii I promise! Lol 😂😅

Hi Kaylee! First of all, I love your videos, especially your rare plant indexes, hauls and just your general aura! You make amazing videos basically! Now, I am so confused between the three forms - of course, I clearly see the differences when you show them in this video, however all adansoniis are very different I find. On the Swedish bidding market place "Tradera", a lot of people are selling them :) Can you make a more in depth video on how to differentiate the three forms, with more different plants of the same form or something? Good work!

The obliqua is cool because of its rarity - but if it wasn't so rare and someone offered me the choice between it and adansonii, I'd take the adansonii. I like to see my plants grow new leaves, etc. I don't think I'd like just having runners grow from my plant. I guess if I owned it I would keep it in a vivarium then with humidity and artificial light. For me I'm happy with adansonii- but cool to know! I hope people don't destroy these delicate plants by harvesting too many from the wild

Nevertheless, it is a fast proliferator rather than a fast grower. You can let the new plants cover the ground instead of climbing. That is, if you have the suitable conditions.

Such an interesting video! I did know about the Obliqua being extremely rare. I bought an Adonsonii at my local garden centre which was labelled as an Obliqua, I went and told an employee that they were labelling it wrong but they wouldn't listen to me. Oh well. Also thanks for clearing something up, I have got two Adonsonii's but they look quite different. Which always had me puzzled. But I now think one is the round form and the other is the regular form. It was looking very good with big leaves and I didn't knew the plant so I bought it. this video made me realize that it is not an Obliqua but its an Adonsonii. Lucky for me it was only 12 euros :) but maybe I should let the nursery know when I see it the next time cause I generally think they don't know the difference. I’m assuming this doesn’t apply anymore? I see lots of obliqua these days, maybe after this video folks started to capitalize on the ‘rarity’ of the plant. Update: 2022 August... The market is about to be flooded with Obliqua. As the pandemiv boom seems to die down, people are now letting go of a temporary hobby, as they're not indoors constantly any longer, and thus have no more infinite time to fuss over their plants. Professional players on the market have been growing obliqua Peru for the last 3 years from these runners, and now have hundreds, if not thousands of this plant in stock! So, from thousands, it'll now be around 200 for a small, rooted plant or a few nodes.

Thank you for this video! It definitely explains how rare obliqua is (and very unsustainable/ impractical as a houseplant?) As I said on your previous post, I was able to get a hold of something labeled M. Leichtlinii which (due to some google search) I believed is a hybrid of obliqua - I found it listed somewhere as a M. Obliqua "Leichtlinii" but now I believe it's just a round form of Adansonii or something very similar - it's definitely not regular or narrow form though. But your video has been very helpful to me to somewhat closely identify what I have :D

Smashed the Like button I wonder if anyone could help me to understand if there's different varieties of a Monstera Adansonii which trails, i have 2 of them and one grows vertically but the other trails like Pathos, it was so hard to get it and it was the last 3 that could find that were abandoned at a local shop. Hello Kaylee Ellen, my name is Tales Valério and I live in Brazil, more precisely in Northeast Brazil. I study Architecture and Urbanism and have deepened my research in Landscaping. Our biggest reference in Brazilian and world landscaping regarding landscape projects and species research is undoubtedly Roberto Burle Marx. I would like to congratulate you on your beautiful and thorough work on the differences between Monstera Obliqua and Monstera Adansonii. Particularly I have some copies of M. Adansonii here at home. Very beautiful. I believe I saw M. Obliqua somewhere here in Brazil. I don't remember where. But, finally, I may be wrong, but it is so common and so easy to find rare species here in Brazil due to the richness of our diverse flora, that for many people it is natural to own or live among so many rare and fantastic species. God loves gardens. He took care of the details of each of his creations. I am following your posts from this video. Thanks for the information and seriousness. Hugs from the Brazilian people.

Correct. And the same goes for Obliqua: the correct pronounciation is oblekwa, not obleka.

@@claudiagiannetto1463 your input would be so appreciated when I make the plant pronounciation video!! I'll be focusing on the (latinised) greek words, but I have some accent questions, let me know if you'd mind asking you a few things. Have a great weekend!! 😊

First, I have learned so much from your videos and watch them and review them often. Thank you. You are a great and generous teacher! Im still a little confused about adonsonii-- How is it possible to tell the difference between laniata versus regular adonsonii (narrow or wide), especially when it's in its juvenile state? Or how would I know im buying a laniata versus a large/mature leaf of adonsonii? I think I can see the difference between wide and narrow adonsonii, but cant figure out the laniata...I would like to collect all three forms. Thank you!!!

I wonder if I was just the only one who get angry on the way she expresses every time about adansonii, like if it was ugly or not pretty much interesting. And then just like clearly moking of people who doesnt have an obliqua, and just presuming every thirty seconds HAHAHAHA thanks for the info but you should just relax señora

Fantastic video! Could you please tell us why the obliq is so rare and so hard to come by? The specimen that you're holding looks like it could propagate 5-10 plants. So why are they so rare?
@thomaspaine5601
@thomaspaine5601 5 лет назад
I was thinking pretty much the same thing throughout the entire video. 1) If it is so rare and valuable and needs high humidity etc, a large glass tank and humidifier are as cheap as chips in comparison and yet there it just sits crinkling up on her shelf! 2) Why isn't propagation a high priority? Propagating it is not even mentioned in the video! 3) Then there are those runners crying out and trying to propagate and using up the poor plant's energy and yet again no attempt is being made to provide those runners with the resources they need and take some burden off the mother plant. I do not get it. Maybe all things considered the other species of Monstera are just better and more practical plants.

Finally, you solved my riddle. I got a cutting of a monstera some months ago and I wasn't sure what it was. I searched the Internet and stumbled over the muggle plants article as well. Now I know that I got an adansonii "Narrow Form". Unfortunately my cutting is quite hard to care for. For half a year it stayes as one folded and one crispy leave. What can I do to help? Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you!
@naz300
@naz300 5 лет назад
These plants get mealy bugs easily. You have to check for mealy bugs between the crevices or it can also be root rot because the plant didn't get to heal before you placed it into the soil and started rooting.

Monstera Obliqua is sold at around $8 for a two-leaf rooted cutting in China now. For $20, you can get a fairly large one with 20-ish leaves.

I love your videos you always come with a lot of great information which I enjoy & I love your style plus your accent is awesome too... but I'm curious to know how come you didn't mention the monstera esqueleto in the video cuz they have to be in the adansonii family right? Also I thought I bought a baby adansonii but it fits the description of what you described the obliqua to be...it is very small plus has a runner ... so if I sent you a picture of my plant could you tell me if it is or not? 🙏🙏🙏 & never stop making these awesome videos of yours!

Honestly Monsteras are really not that rare just back in style so to speak from all the "hype" online. My grandparents had a huge Monstera along with several parlor palms,creeping figs, lipstick plants,pocket book plant,Asparagus plumosa fern,etc I took over some of their collection 15-16 yrs ago and I've only ever had trouble with the ferns because they love high humidity. Happy gardening! 💚💚💚 🌿😊👍

@@LynnAgain83 Hiya! Yeah I know a bit more now and I know the deliciosa and the adansonii are common but the oblique is defo still very rare along with some of the other varieties of monstera. I thought i didn't like ferns until my boyfriend bought me one and now i'm completely in love hahaha defo sits right next to the humidifier though :D.

After watching this video it’s safely to say I DEFINITELY have a obliqua 😅. I was worried at first but the runners gave me confirmation. The only reason why mine did grow was because I put it in my bathroom. She is a diva for humidity and is very unforgiving when my humidity is not to her liking.

You should do a video about instability of the philodendron pink princess variegation. Ultimately they seem to revert to burgundy. Is the pink caused by a mutation or by the introduction of a virus.
