Summer temps hovering in the upper 90’s. Rising carp. The Missouri River. Dry fly fishing. Montana’s magnificent Big Sky. Put these together, and T-Motion Theater had an unlikely, yet absolutely remarkable fly fishing video opportunity. Carp, unlike trout or steelhead or bonefish or any for that matter, feed in a frenzy known to some anglers as the “Hour of Power”. This is when schools of carp rise to the surface in fierce unison, their big mouths breaking the surface and “hoovering” up bugs in a linear path on the top of the frothy, shallow water. Montana native, fly fishing guide extraordinaire and longtime Gallatin Gateway friend of mine, Brian Kimmel of Shadow of a Trout Outfitters, told me that the next T-Motion film MUST be on Montana carp. I had no idea what I was in for. I packed up my gear into a boat driven by Adipose Boatworks founder and co-owner, Tracy Allen. Tracy quickly jetted Brian into the action of carp on the Missouri River near Helena, Montana. This film immediately became “Carpology,” as Brian revealed his extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for these giant, heat loving, bottom dwelling, big-bellied fish. The best sight fishing video on youtube is of….carp? What?!? So technical. Maybe just as much as tailwater trout. Great video. Great music…reminded me a mix between Talking Heads and Dire Straits. Amazing work!

Caught my first carp on the fly today.. what a rush. That beast and I fought for 10 or more minutes before I could net him and then when i release him, he still had enough power to push away out of my hand! Challenging and good fun fish.

I started fly fishing for carp in the Mighty Mo in the early '80s. I worked for a tackle store in Great Falls and after work we'd have a ball catching them. I've caught them all over the world now, but those MT carp started it all.

I remember when I was little my uncle telling me a story of when I hooked a monster carp and fought it for 30min. They really are beasts! I have yet to land one on the fly, they are so unbelievably picky and spooky. I've thrown everything at them and not a bite. I've seen swarms of them rising in a spot and I threw 10-12 different fly patterns directly at them and they act as if it didn't even exist! I can't wait to hook one! Been chasing them all summer and even without hooking one it's been a rush!

amazed that fish ate around 7 minutes after that sploshy presentation, we'd never get away with that here except on fish that are used to being fed along with the ducks. Good video, nice to see carp getting more recognition

Honestly I think carp are more of a sport fish or game fish than largemouth will ever be. They get bigger, fight harder, and can be a true challenge to catch.

Excelente video Todd, aquí en Neuquén (tierra de grandes truchas marrones), Argentina, en la zona del río Limay inferior y río Neuquén inferior, estan las carpas desde hace 25 o 30 años, pero recién ahora se las esta pescando deportivamente con mosca, muchos pescadores con mosca las desprecian debido a que endiosan las Truchas y ven en la Carpa a un competidor que puede terminar con los salmónidos, pero de a poco crece la cantidad de aficionados que descubren las cualidades de esta especie. Me encantaron los dos videos el Carpology 1 y 2, saludos!!

It's wild how quickly my mind swept from "eww carp" to "what an amazing fish" after being taken probably 40 yards into my backing and getting a good up-close experience on my first fish. They instantly became one of my favorite fish to target.
