Montana Elusive Golden Trout

Video was shot in July 2022...
My friends Jason, Cody, and I set out with a mission to catch some golden trout. Although reaching the specific lake was no simple feat, we persevered and were rewarded with a stunning sight. It's clear that Montana boasts some truly breathtaking locations.

I've been to the middle lake....skunked. The problem with golden trout lakes, in MT, is that they're only stocked at 6 year intervals corresponding to the egg takes out of Sylvan Lake. (That is unless the lake is self-sustaining. Most in MT are not.) So I generally try to limit my MT golden trout lake forays to 3 and 4 years after the stocking. Wyoming stocks their GT lakes mostly every 2 years with some at 4 year intervals. That's generally where I head to chase goldens....

It appears to be a promising spot, although I have only attempted to catch Goldens a few times. I recall catching them in the past, and it seemed to be a productive time, but hasn't been the same since. hopefully that lake produces some good Goldens, I believe FWP only stock a handful of lakes in Montana with these fish, so must be something too them, I am sure elevation and remoteness has something to do with it.

That lake is supposedly self sustaining and does not need to be stocked. Hence the possibility of big Goldens

@@kshoey73 Did Mike or Leo tell you that? Looking on FishMT, it was last stocked in 2017....the 2023 scheduled listing is missing, and its scheduled to be stocked again in 2029.....standard 6 year MT Golden Trout stocking schedule......

I have never worried about it packrats getting into my vehicle while fishing probably because its too hot. But if I do stay the night somewhere I will typically leave the hood of my car open just incase.

This is often how my Golden trips end but it's also what keeps me coming back for them. Do you guys ever use something like the Garmin Striker Cast when floating lakes? I find it helpful when you don't see fish cruising and they're eating on the bottom.

I own a deeper, but only use it for ice fishing. Sometimes I will use it for Flathead lake when I'm attempting to fish for lake trout. I only use It to stay in the depth I want, I don't trust it for reading fish in open water. I never seen it be accurate before. Do you find the Garmin fairly accurate when it picks up fish on the bottom?

@@Fishthe406 Yes, I find it accurate enough (caveat: I've never used a high-end fish finder). It's minimalist and charges via USB so I believe it's worth the weight in the backcountry.

Well, it’s a horrible lake! Joking aside, I did see one 8 incher at the inlet. I’m sure our timing was bad, it’s been a scorcher leading up to that day. They were probably feeding on the bottom. I’ve seen fish at the third lake before, are they all gone?

@@Fishthe406 last 3 times this year there’s been nothing in heart. I pretty sure it froze completely this last winter.
