Not only is “The Weekend” making fun of all the plastic surgery in Hollywood, he is also poking fun of “ Lip Syncing” by performers in this video when he stops to drink a glass of water as the song continues to play on!

That girl's name is Valerie. This is a continuation of his old song and dance. He has 2 metaphorical women, Valerie (his original fans back when he was not well known, who loved the soul his music had back in House of Balloons), and there's another woman named Diana (new fans/a metaphorical person showing what he's done to become famous i.e. feeling as though he has sold out. This is a concept he took from MJ's song Dirty Diana, and even did a cover of it when he really started to grow as an artist). These two women make up most of his lyrical genius, and are what got him to his Starboy lifestyle. However he also features Satan, or at least some form of the devil, in his second trilogy (not another trilogy album, instead it's a collection of 3 music vids). When played in the proper order this trilogy tells a tale of him being disliked by the masses but loved by Valerie, he then gets a taste of fame and adoration from this gaunt, flaming haired, extremely pale man in a suit with a red shirt under it as he lights Abel on fire. At this point Valerie begins to look distressed, disgusted, or at least disinterested. Meanwhile though, the crowd becomes a roar of cheers for him, as he burns alive for their entertainment. In the next video we see Abel dressed in all black, dragging his own corpse to a grave he dug, next to a burning bush. After his own burial the gaunt man (the devil from before) shows up. Abel shoots this man point blank in the head and drives away. In the final video we see Abel driving with two provocatively dressed women. He then wrecks the vehicle and begins limping to what is presumably his home. Upon walking inside he sees it is very dark, save for a very dark almost blood red glow coming from what appears to be a door leading downstairs, and a bright golden light coming from upstairs. Abel begins slowly walking up the stairs, still injured from the wreck. When he tries to go into the door, he is met with the same gaunt man from the last two vids holding a golden apple, and there are two women we saw earlier in the video in the room with him. The gaunt man shakes his head at Abel as he makes eye contact, and holds up the apple. This presumably means that The Weeknd feels as though he has sold his soul to the devil and can not go to heaven, even if he were to try. He does further this idea in the album Starboy, when in multiple songs he writes about heaven not being for him, and that mulhalla (not sure on the spelling of this, but it's a road in Cali that has a lot of winding twists and turns. It's widely known apparently) is where he will go. Additionally he states that "she" should save her prayers, as he is too far gone. Abel's story telling capabilities are incredible to be sure. He makes some of the most outstanding works of art in his music, and many of his music videos are not the lesser.

I just discovered it the other day without knowing anything about him and I instantly was obsessed with the video and song. Love it more now that i kinda know what it's about. I'm a sucker for weird ass shit with a deeper meaning.

At first I didn't like this song, but then it grew on me and now I can't stop listening to it. 😄 I feel like the music video doesn't fit this song at all and needs a melancholic music video for it, but at the very least I'm happy for him.

So allegedly, the girl without the mask is supposed to be Selena Gomez. Other than that, this video says so much. No just about her, not just about the Grammys. Not even just about Hollywood in general. It’s a self inflicted desire to appease to everyone else for acceptance. His face was wrapped up entirely during this VMA performance. The outcome is what we see in this video. Next, the only person in the video with no mask, is a woman. She (allegedly), is supposed to represent Selena Gomez. This goes back to his “My Dear Melancholy” EP where he referenced her in the song “Call Out My Name” with the quote; “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life” He was willing to help her live. But in turn, the gun is in her hands, cuffed by his. It’s almost as if he’s begging her to do this. He wanted her to live, but the pain of the aftermath obviously still haunts him to the point he wants to die. She should be the one to do it, since he’s been hurt the most by her. In the song “I Was Never There” a quote “You’d rather something toxic, so I poison myself again, again. Til I feel nothing” So willing to make it work, you damage yourself to just be accepted. To be noticed. This is what YOU wanted, this is what I need to have YOU notice me. Keep me around. Even if I hurt myself in the process. This comes full circle, not only to her but everyone and everything. He made himself new, created something that “Hollywood” would accept. In such a dire need to feel acceptable, he made himself into one of them. Despite it all, he still doesn’t get acknowledged. The Grammy board didn’t nominate him for anything. Selena moved on very quickly, and didn’t seem to care. So even with wanting getting plastic surgery, broadcasting it to the world on the center stage. Jazzing up his suit jacket, trying to stand out, he still isn’t accepted. YOU did this. I did all this for YOU. For the media. I did this for YOU,Selena. I did this for YOU, Grammy board. I did this for YOU, Hollywood. But yet, I still am not acknowledged, still I am not accepted. Even when doing what I could do to fit in. The fakes and phonies behind the masks that he puts on a show for are all expressionless. Anything he does...just simply. Isn’t. Enough. So what’s next for a man in denial? For a man who needs to be acknowledged. By past lovers, media and the world stage. This is what YOU, have made me become. I’ve tried to fit in. I’ve tried to stand out. I’ve tried to go by your standards of beauty. All for nothing. His artistry is all he had. But he’s brought to the point of realizing it’ll never be enough to satisfy the ones he desperately wants acceptance and acknowledgement from. YOU made me this way, now you can watch how it ends. Notice how he goes up to a stage. Set up to look like a a place a funeral would take place. Where one would speak about the person who died. Enter the gun. But it’s a gag. Why do I hear a lot of chatter in your video than, for example, reactions to the song and what is it about? Are you reporters? are you analysts and critics, songwriters? Or are you journalists who know about all the stars inside and out ?! Why are there so many words? and at the same time you pause the video when there is an interesting video plot !!

I really liked the song. But I agree with Russ. There are songs that I like from The Weekend much better. So I'd probably give it a C+. The hook is catchy, but for me the song is too soft and doesn't have the punch I'm looking for.
