In this episode: Leaving Glacier and heading into a remote forest camping location.
Riding Solo is a video series about motorcycling alone in the USA backcountry on a BMW 1200 GS motorcycle. The videos were filmed during a 6,000 mile/30-day solo ride in the summer of 2020 in locations including Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. Each episode focuses on great motorcycling roads (paved and dirt), camping, cooking and relaxing in scenic and remote locations. The purpose of the series is to show viewers how easy it is to ride solo on a motorcycle adventure in the USA backcountry.

That BMW you have is one of the best bikes for traveling on long trips ever made,.... Had a BMW R90S bought brand new in 1975,.. Sold it 6 years later had sellers remorse for several months,.. Had 189,000 miles on it From Vancouver BC to Key West Fl. Never gave me any trouble.

I watch a lot of "moto-vlogging" on RU-vid and often contemplate if I have the financial means or commitment to try it for myself, but your videos truly are mini-movies and show that there are levels to how committed one can be to the presentation. Twelve episodes in and I realize that while you shoot video, that you don't talk while riding but give us updates throughout the video. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. Godspeed!

The funny thing about those "uncomfortable situations" we run into when out on our adventure trips, it seems like hell when we are going through them, but when we remember those times, we miss them, and want to do it again. Sounds like you were doing a lot of soul searching that night. It's a good thing, and keeps us centered in our lives.

when my kids are out of the house and thru with college, i will retire and do some of this type of motorcycle adventuring. but for now, i have to watch others do this stuff and ride my mid size naked around on nice weekend days. my dad was able to hike the entire AT when he was my age (early 50s). this was right before youtube where a NYC local paper funded his 3 month hike in exchange for his journal writing he mailed in at many of the check points/posts along the trail.

I love using my wood stove. It’s very light, packs up small and can function as a mini fire pit or for cooking. Not as fast as a jet boil, to boil water, but whose in a hurry when camping? Ok maybe in the morning for coffee :). No need to buy and carry all those canisters. Of course i always bring an alcohol stove in case there isn’t wood available or if it’s to wet. I usually like a table too :)

Cheers, Sterling! I’ve been watching this series since day one, and I look forward to every upload. I’m really enjoying the content, and I really appreciate all the extra effort you’ve been putting into the production value. The edits, extra audio (like the motorcycle engine noise passing under the drone shot), different angles, establishing shots, and visual story telling doesn’t go unnoticed. I know you’re a professional filmmaker and it definitely shows through in the videos. If you don’t mind, I’m going to be making a short Vlog style video highlighting your adventure to hopefully get more motorcycling community eyes on your channel. Hopefully it’s ok if I use a couple short clips of your content in my video (credit obviously given). Let me know. I’m a big fan. Ride safe, and keep the rubber side down! Looking forward to what you bring us next. -OR

You can use one motorcycle case for a chair and another for a table.. Or hammock as a chair and both cases for a bigger table.. But i guess it doesn't give the feeling of being civilised.. So the conclusion is..if you want a good civilised feeling, add extra unnecessary waight to your motorcycle for a better trip and off-road handling...

What you say about "smoothing it" reminded me of being deployed overseas and how it was living out of a rucksack or a humvee, moving from place to place and living in the open or in half built (or bombed) structures.... and how really nice it was when we were able to make a morning coffee or enjoy a meal or make a warm comfy hooch. It's amazing how a morning, MRE-inspired cappuccino -- i.e. canteen water, two hot chocolates, two sugars, two non-dairy creamers and two folgers instant coffee packs -- heated over a fire or a hiker's stove would make all the previous discomfort bearable. No adventure worth having is comfortable all the time... but if it can be some of the time.... count me in.
