Everything about this video is absolutely golden. The music, the camera, the cutting, the song itself, the humour...absolute creative genius and you can easily see the links with the advertising industry at the time.
I knew the queen's in this used to live with them just up the road at 195. This was recorded at Candy's or Candy os I forget that's 40yrs ago haha much chemical indulgence.
*1983 ... The Hot Ones* featured pictures of 7 inch singles on the front cover which was cool. Don't forget 'Science Fiction' by The Divinyls, 'Our House' by Madness, 'She Blinded Me With Science' by Thomas Dolby, 'White Wedding' by Billy Idol and 'Too Shy' by Kajagoogoo were also on it. Captain Sensible's "Wot" music video is mostly a parody of Fawlty Towers with a hint of Carry On Abroad thrown in.
My old man said there was a joke doing the rounds in Melbourne in the 1960s.... You'd go up to a bird in the pub and say "tickle your ass with a feather?" and she'd be all "WHAT?!" So you'd say it again to her, how you were commenting on the "particularly nasty weather" we've been having lately, pretending she misheard you.... Erm. Yeah. So there was a hidden joke at 2:16 which went completely over my head before my dad set me straight. Also, Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay, so I'm liking the play on words with the band name. That also went over my head at the time.
Sounds like the 2 Ronnies sketch where the lady bartender keeps "mishearing" Ronnie Barker - RB: "Tickle your botty with a feather tonight?" B: "I beg your pardon!" RB: "Particularly grotty weather tonight"
@@eggtimer2 Band name is Monty Video and the Cassettes. Capital of Uruguay, Montevideo, is pronounced 'Monty Viday-oh.' ....so just to _reeally_ over explain it: The 'Monte' part of Montevideo is pronounced 'Monty' and the 'Viday-oh' part of Montevideo is spelled 'video.' BOOM. Well played, Mr Cassette 👉👍 or watevs the hell your name is.
Found this via “The Lost Nightlife of Inner City Auckland”! Thirty seven years since I watched this on TV - “Radio With Pictures”, maybe? Monte is Murray Grindley, ex-Underdogs and co-author of the Kiwi hippie hit, “Nature”. This video was recorded at Peppermint Park, Ponsonby Road, Auckland. Funny novelty nonsense then as now, but holds up very well.
Remembering that my cousin Timmy had quite an eclectic music collection. My cuz was a couple years older than me. 1983, 10 and 12. He was the first person I knew w a dual cassette player - you could record cassette to cassette. This song, however he found on Friday Night Videos so set the player next to the TV and leave the room or shut the hell up. He was the first person I knew w a 'Walkman'-like player w auto-reverse button, so no more taking the cassette out to flip to play the b side - Toshiba. From what I remember, Timmy could beat up any kid in town.
Remember Timmy would tease Toby whenever Night Ranger, Sister Christian would play because Toby had the "full-court press" on for a girl named Christian, for like two years. Don't remember what base he got to, if any.
This wasn't the only one hit wonder of 1983 - Safety Dance (Men Without Hats), Bop Girl (Pat Wilson), Australiana (Austen Tayshus), Puttin' on the Ritz (Taco), and Tantalize (Jimmy The Hoover) were also solo one-offs from that year.
Lol whose all Kiwi's remembering this as a kid? im a Kiwi and had no idea the band was New Zealand! I was about 10 and i remembered ringing in to a radio station to request it. I think id accidentally phoned Radio Rheama(unsure spelling) theyd never heard of it and they thought it was a joke, no song could have such a weird name ;o) it was so catchy i remember it till this day and looked it up, thanks for putting it up, a good piece of Kiwi music from the past.
Kiwis know he also did Travellin' On (Europa) with Midge Marsden and Steve Ray Vaughan and Cat's Prefer Chef ad as well the legendary Great Crunchie Train Robbery - Cadbury Crunchie.
@@fletchphil At the time of this song, we were supporting Split Enz, Dragon and Mi-Sex = all NZ acts (some members of Mental As Anything were also Kiwi) - unsure why this artist was overlooked.
I enter this title in every single meme that asks the question "What song would you play on these speakers?". Partially to amuse myself by driving up the 'views' number by sending AC/DC fans to this video, and partially to weird the world as much as I can.
I remember i was 6-7 years old my dad ran a Hi-Fi shop selling records /tapes and stereos etc. & founded some EMI record club in new zealand So I found in his study a cassette tape think called solid gold 82 or maybe 88 later release, and that song made me laugh & popped in my head today so i looked it up. the "empty glass / pinched me hangabout line" think i rewinded and played many times laughing lol... The singer did work on lyrics for other artists and was prob the man in the scene and would have known all the people of 80's music youth and bad hair doo's hehe and made that song. wicked really, what a random memory i had to comment & i like never do this i use FB prob once a year lol.... Nice one Monte Video a true visionary in 1882 ...
The 'guy' is Murray Grindley... and he's a music genius. Responsible for some of the most ironic and memorable NZ TVC jingles of a generation.... Cadbury Crunch 'Train Hijack'... Europa Gas Ad with Stevie Ray Vaughan... Cadbury Creme Eggs 'Don't Get Caught'... Tip Top 'Polar Pops' etc etc.... he's the absolute man!
