I listened to the audiobook of Jackson’s translation of the Saga of the Volsungs. He did the reading, and is a pleasure to listen to. An afternoon and evening very well spent.

It’s great to hear him read so you can get the most likely historical pronunciations.

This is sort of tangential to the "Norse America" book, but several years ago, I read something called "The Lamp of Experience: Whig History and the Intellectual Origins of the American Revolution" about how supposedly a lot of the founding fathers took inspiration from the history of what happens to the Angles and Saxons. Really unusual thesis, but it made a really solid argument. Also just finished up the part in the Dan Jones Plantagenet book about the Battle of Bannockburn. Didn't realize what a routing it was for the English.

That thesis sounds interesting. And yeah, it seems that Robert Bruce made a career of humiliating the English.

What a great month! I really enjoyed reading handmaid‘s tale with you… your insight definitely improved my experience. I really need to read some of these sagas…. Can’t believe I haven’t, considering how much I love the Vikings show. 😜. Accurate or not, I absolutely loved Braveheart… One of my favorite movies of all time.

Braveheart is still a fun movie! And yes, I’d definitely recommend checking out some sagas. They open up a fascinating world.

Great wrap up. You had a really good month. You always find such interesting history books and I like the sound of the Women Troubadours. Really enjoyed The Valkyries and The Saga of the Volsungs. Fab video😊

Nice wrap up! Added some titles to my TBR. I’ve been struggling with the book I chose for this stretch of Historathon. It’s a bit more dry than I thought it would be and I just can’t get stuck in. 😅

Nonfiction history can be minefield of dryness at times.

I've never heard of the conflict over discover between catholics and protestants lol, that's about as petty as it gets haha
