One of the greatest things about traveling is it offers oodles of opportunities to make new friends! One such opportunity fell into our laps while we were failing at finding a free campsite near Yosemite National Park.

Yosemite National Park is one of America's most famous national parks. So it was a must-see destination for us while traveling north through California. One problem though - we couldn't find boondocking sites anywhere near Yosemite! As luck would have it, we were contacted by an amazing couple who offered a solution!

Later in the summer there’s less water for the falls so less mist. I was there in early August and bridal veil falls is amazing how the air catches the water and it’s constantly changing.

Years back I moved to a town close to Yosemite, so have gone up several times a year every year; I think I've become somewhat 'used' to the main attractions, so it's great to see the amazement from the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time! On your next trip, try the following: Taft Point (you passed it on the way up to Glacier Point), Tioga Pass (lots of cool views and stops along the way) and go out the east entrance to Mono Lake (have lunch at Whoa Nellie Deli, the best gas station food in the US); maybe even stop at Bodie ghost town if that's interesting to you.

I was there about 5 years ago and it was so dry the falls never hit the ground. Just a mist falling off the edge and evaporated. I just watched a video of the valley flooded a few days ago. very different. Thank you too for another great video!

I would recommend going to the two falls. You don't have to take the mist trail. There is another trail around it that you won't get wet. Going up to the upper falls is amazing.

When you are in Yosemite again, you will want to go to Tioga Pass and the east entrance to the park. That is a beautiful drive with lots of places to pull off and exercise your camera. It is only open in the summer because snow clearing would be impossible in the winter. No trip to Yosemite is complete without seeing Tioga Pass.

The feeling we all get being in the vicinity of a waterfall is created by negative ions created by the water vapor. It purifies the air. Of course getting wet is also a plus.

If you can stay a few more days, Tioga Pass will open at 9am Monday. It will take you up to 9000 feet. It is wonderful high country with great granite. If you go, make sure your gas tank is full. On the other side of Tioga Pass is Lee Vining and Mono Lake. I recommend Nicelys for breakfast. If you want to push a little bit, highway 108 from 395 takes you up and over Sonora Pass. And, Donnell Vista along 108, besides a vista, has some great granite monolith. The Mist Trail in Yosemite is always slippery because the mist from Vernal Falls sweeps across the steps. Everybody goes slow. Out of the way spot: as you come into Yosemite Valley, you cross the Pohono Bridge. If they haven't bloomed out, there are nice stands of dogwood on either side of the bridge. There is a wide spot on the right of the bridge. After the bridge, maybe 200 feet, is Fern Spring. There is a wide spot for parking a couple of cars. It is a natural spring. It is a cool place to sit and let the day go by. If you make it to Mariposa, Happy Burger is a good place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And, also in Mariposa, inside the Pioneer Market, about two blocks behind the Burger King, they make good Deli sandwiches and have Peet's coffee bar. Cheers.

I highly recommend the Panorama Trail!!! It starts up at Glacier Point and takes you over to the top of Nevada Falls. And you get some amazing views the whole time! Great shots of the back side of Half Dome, and there's a spot where you can see both Vernal and Nevada Falls from across the valley! It's an amazing hike with different angles of the popular views in the park! You can drive up to Glacier Point and then hike out to Nevada Falls and back....or, I believe you can park down in the valley by Happy Trails, take the shuttle up to Glacier Point, and then hike to Nevada Falls and then back down to the valley from there via the John Muir Trail if you area adamant about not getting wet (even though I think the Mist Trail is beyond awesome and totally worth the sogginess!!) Panorama trail was way less crowded than the other popular trails like John Muir, Vernal/Nevada via Mist, and Yosemite Falls, the last time I went ;)

Our last visit to Yosemite was just after the drought years and there wasn't sufficient flow to create much spray at all. Here's a tip I'll share .... just put your camera lens up to one of the binocular halves and use it as a telephoto. Use the one that has the focus adjuster if there is one. I've been doing that for decades :-) Many times, it doesn't work all that well but once in a while it'll surprise you with an amazing shot.
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound 6 лет назад
We thought about that, but even looking through these we were shaky so I don't it would work with ones with that much zoom. But maybe we'll be surprised if we do ever try it

Lol.. Mixing up Yellowstone and Yosemite -- the names of these parks -- is hilarious not least of which being that I do the EXACT same thing all the time. It's not that I get confused about the actual parks. I know both parks well having visited both many times but for some odd reason in my brain, I say Yosemite often times when I mean Yellowstone. I've been to countless national parks and it's only these two names that gets crossed in my brain for whatever reason. lol. So I fully empathize David. :-) Enjoy Yosemite.. It's the crown jewel of the CA NPs.

I second the recommendation for the John Muir trail up to Nevada falls. Decent hike, the trail is not generally wet like the Mist Trail and the view of Liberty Cap and down the stripey rock face from the top of Nevada is stunning. You also get amazing views of Vernal Falls with none of that pesky tumbling to your death. ;-)
