Cannot think of a reason why I would ever want a MOOG -- and then I hear the most phenomenal bass sounds and profoundly inspiring tonality in the world! Then I start counting my money to see if I can afford one...
While the Moog One has a incredible sound complexity I still think it fails to capture the same aura, the richness, depth, and even the flaws in spite of all its power, grace, and appeal that makes the Memorymoog so spin chillingly human. This is one of my all time favorite synthesizers. This one is a particularly good sounding example too, a lot of them seem to have lost their edge over the years.
Another Moog One owner here, hate the company. Don't want to say anything nice about them because of their utterly shitty customer service regarding the state of the Moog One's firmware - but The Moog One is phenominal if you modulate, and run the filters in series. It will do the above.
I played one of these in a Marine Corps travel show/rock band back in the day. Used to change and edit each patch live and on the fly manually LOL. Tried to understand in my 20's what a beast of a synth (with the multiple voicings especially) it is now I realize the treasure that was just sitting right there under my hands that I often took for granted and let slip away.
Olala,we always talk about the minimoog, but this one!!! waww the sound! it is so expressive! there is clearly a soul that you will never have using digital machines. The polyphony of the arpeggiator is enormous!
This is something that isn't brought up much, but I absolutely love Jon Lord's use of the Memorymoog through a Leslie cabinet (on slow), on Whitesnake's Slide It In album (songs such as 'Gambler' and 'Love Ain't No Stranger'), as well on stage in 1983/4 and with Deep Purple in 1984/5. He created such a warm, luscious sound, which I hear wisps of in your 'Cinecitta' demo.
It’s raw and pleasing at the same time. It has tones of wine over the edge… and young beaujolais nouveau. And the weirdest thing is… this instrument doesn’t need a good player… it plays itself as long as there is a human host sitting in front if it to listen… it’s truly mythical.
Great playing and patches! Among other things, I particularly like the harp-like attack and decay with the sustain, slow vibrato, and filter modulation on 'Ultramarine'.
5:36, man that sounds so damn sweet!! Been brushing up on the Memorymoog for good measure, looks like the Moog One has taken some inspiration from this thing! Thanks Paolo!
@@SynthManiaDotCom Hey, is there any way I could get a sheet music (or other) version of these short songs so that I can play these songs on my own synthesizer? They sound so beautiful that I want to learn them, but doing it from watching a video (with out-of-focus keys) is not exactly easy lol.
Mr. Extreme OMG it’s absolutely cinematic in sound, Super warm, it’s a bit rich for my blood in price LOL, but having one I would gladly dump VSTs and DAWs except ProTools for dumping this lush audio to HD. Gorgeous device !
Absolutely wonderful. I would LOVE a Memorymoog, and the only reason I haven't bought one is that I'm worried about instabilities and costly maintenance. This one doesn't have a great reputation in that regard. It sounds great, though, and clearly demonstrates how underrated the 3340 is.
Great sounds! With the new Moog One it's nice to compare it to their previous monster synth the MemoryMoog. I can definitely hear some of the MemoryMoog DNA in the One. Hopefully they will do better with it then they did at the time with the MemoryMoog.
Is there a small cigarette burn on the case under the keys between C4 & C5 somewhere around G4 & A4 give or save 1 ?? If so please reply... Thanks, ratzenhof
Dear Paolo: 4 years since this video, what is your opinion of the Memorymoog in terms of stability? Did you have any issues at all with it? I noticed that you have the first version, which, supposedly, is even worse! I'm looking for a MM, but I'm afraid of its history of problems, especially taking into consideration the price. Would you mind giving me your opinion? Thank you!
I bought my Memorymoog ten years ago and - knock on wood - it has never required maintenance so far. For comparison, the OB-Xa went in and out of "surgery" at least three-four time in the same period. However, if you're not fully prepared to spend the time / money / effort in the (almost guaranteed) event that a vintage synth will need maintenance, I'd suggest to you to consider the Moog One instead
@@SynthManiaDotCom Paolo, thanks for the reply! I actually have a collection of vintage synths. Problem is: we're short on maintenance service here in Brazil, so an unstable synth like the MM, that otherwise could be a good investment, may need some thinking before one decides to buy it. I really am in love with its sound, but the lack of techs here is what makes me afraid. The one good tech we have doesn't like to work on Memorymoogs. My OB-Xa, for instance, received some pretty good service from him, but the MM is a different story. Anyway, thank you for your kind opinion, I'll take it into consideration!
Moon Tides made my spine tingle. AMS are harder to find.. been trying to find one in USA for years and I have the money. Just literally impossible to find.
They should have gotten this right the first time. They might not have had to deal with coming back; they would have still been around. At least they got a second chance with the Moog One.
Possibly either the worst or best thing moog has ever put out. From what I hear, the circuitry is just awful. But it sounds literally better than any other synth I've ever heard. So full.
These two synths can't be compared , both are mythic , it is a nonsense to pretend to compare 2 very different synths, and both exellent it is like to compare Moog and Dave Smith, totally impossible.Like to compare diamonds whith gold. You also have to consider that RU-vid doesn't render an exellent sound, and it has nothing to see whith the reality.
MegaPhalaenopsis You mean one cannot compare different things? Interesting. Of course Oberheim and Moog are different. But I played both an OB-Xa and a Memorymoog in the 80s, and both were sounding really fat. Different things can have s.th. In common, like diamonds and gold which are both very valuable. And IMO an Oberheim and a Memorymoog do sound more similar than either of them compared to a Prophet.
What I was meaning, was that in fact,it is difficult for me to admit we could compare two jewels that really belong to the best , but are all different. They both have enormous qualities , and actually, all the factories that work to create numeric synths don't manage to really re-create their sounds, partiully the soul given by the fact they are analogic. Since the end seventies, till the mid eightees, many exellent analog synths have been created , that gave a very big sound panel for the musicians. I personally, have difficults to compare the synths from this period,as many of them had their own touch, and I always wanted them all. We also could tell about Korg,Roland ,Sequencial circuits, and several others that gave us real big synths that are always in the vibe today. Same thing about the drum boxes. Very dificult to compare.
Oberheims and Moogs are equally awesome but each unique in character. I have owned both over the years you know which one you are hearing when they play especially bass patches. All I can say is sometimes you need a Ob sometimes you need a Moog variety is the spice of life. I currently own a Moog phatty played the new OB6 recently sorely disappointed but I don't think it was an issue of design between Dave Smith and Tom Oberhiem I just think they did not get the right artists and sound designers to make worthy factory patches (should have called Jordan). Still might look at a SEM 4 voice next year. We have to keep the pressure on Moog to bring this one back they can have both my kidneys and my net worth for a new MemoryMoog.
This thing sounds great but when you look at the price of them it suddenly looks like dogshit. Just not necessary considering what you could get with that money.
