I've had my sub25 for a few months now. I use it exactly like you suggested in the pros/cons, next to a computer, alongside push 2, and it works perfectly for my workflow and space. Very glad I didn't opt for the sub37, as great as that synth is, this review really helped me make that decision and I'm really glad with how it has turned out. If I needed something more standalone, then the sub37 would have been totally worth it, but a computer is a key part of my workflow and it's super convenient with the sub25 without paying for anything I didn't need. Sub25 is a nice size to take to jam with friends too.

Coming into the year 2020, I have to wonder if Moog may be working on a synth to bridge the gap between the Matriarch (at $2K) and the Moog One (at $6-8K). This. I would buy a (rackable) desktop subsequent in a heartbeat. I got a Slim Phatty in hopes of achieving this, and while it does sound excellent, it falls short in a number of ways, most obviously the lack of sequencer, but also the envelopes, mod routing options, etc. But it's LED-ringed knobs mean you can actually tell where your values really after switching presets, which is one of the few flaws with the Subsequent. Unrelated - I'd be interested to know if I could send my Subsequent in to Moog for a CV outs upgrade. I've regretted not getting the CV version for a long time.

I read in the manual that, even though the keyboard itself doesn't have aftertouch, the synth engine does, so you can get that as well if you control it from a keyboard with aftertouch. I don't understand why they didn't make the keyboard aftertouch compatible, but I guess it's better than not having it at all.
@kappyLV
@kappyLV 4 года назад
As I kick left hand bass in my band, it has a lot of possibilities. Having a small stage footprint with the classic Moog bass is very desirable. The keyboard size is just right and patch recall is necessary for me. My only issue with it is it has no aftertouch. Being able to do modulation or pitch bend from the keyboard is really important to me since I don’t have a hand free to operate the wheels. Not sure I can get past that limitation.

IMO Moog stuff is less worth its price the lower you go. $1500 for a Sub37 isn't terrible IMO. $850 looks like it's going to be the price for the Sub 25, and for that money you can get something with a lot more to offer. $600 for a mother 32 seems ludicrous to me, especially considering the Behringer synths competing with it. I got very lucky and had a guy sell me a barely used Subsequent 37 for $800. Can't picture myself spending that same money and getting this. Grandmother seems way more worthwhile.

@@hulkslayer626 After the Sub Phatty came the *Sub* 37, which had a few more (significant) features than the Sub Phatty, particularly duophony, a sequencer, a second LFO and an incredibly useful screen. I've gotta admit though, I just looked through the Sub Phatty manual and you're right that it does actually have a LOT more of the same features than the front panel indicates. They seem like a bit of a pain to activate compared to the 37, but that's probably an acceptable tradeoff for the healthy cost savings for a great many people. But I digress - after Sub Phatty came the Sub 37 as the next tier in the Phatty line. Then a few years later came the Subsequent 37 as an upgrade/replacement for the Sub 37. And now we get the Subsequent 25 presumably as a replacement for the Sub Phatty. At first I found the shift in naming convention a little misleading. But tbh, after your comment prompted me to read the Phatty manual, it seems much more reasonable to highlight just how similar the Sub Phatty (and its successor) is to the Sub 37 (and its successor). Ordered mine today after watching this demo last night! Really appreciate the video as it is super informative and I’m sure I will be coming back to it many times as I learn the Sub25. I plan on using this with my UAD Moog Plugin for ARP/Sequencer functions. Control the Sub25 with my full size Keyboard/midi controller, and use the included Moog librarian software and I basically end up with a Subsquent37, only with added benefit of 88 weighted keys. Main downside I see to this is having to use software to access all potential, but kind of a non issue for me since I plan to leave this planted in my home studio setup next to my computer. I am also curious to know learn more about how to assign/route various midi controller knobs to the desired parameter on the Sub25, such as the input drive as shown in the video. I use a Komplete Kontrol S88 keyboard/midi controller. It has 9 round knobs, among other buttons, above the keys that I assume can be assigned to do this but haven’t ever tried to do. I have always just used it as a piano/keyboard for virtual instruments. I guess my long winded question is, any advice/links on where to learn about mapping midi controllers such as the Komplete Kontrol S88 to control “hidden” Moog features on the Sub25 or a similar scenario? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer and again for this awesome video!

I was deciding between the 25 and 37, but the price of the 25 got me. Still, I really miss the arp function, any advice on how you make this work? MIDI is not my strongsuit :) I'm using Presonus Studio One as DAW and have a Kontrol S49. Thanks!

This feels like a bit of a stopgap from Moog just so they'd have something to show at NAMM 2020. I'm hoping for something a bit more exciting later in the year ... Still, looks like a cool synth and for £100 or £200 less I'd be sorely tempted.

this seems to be a relatively unpopular synth for some reason. im definitely keeping an eye on it personally
@bobyatron7525
@bobyatron7525 4 года назад
I'm sure it's nice. It falls way short in comparisons with its bigger "brother" synth though. If you're lucky and patient you can find someone selling a Sub37 for around the same as what Moog is charging for this synth. With that you get a fantastic amount of modulation routings, a great sequencer, and very close to knob-per-function with the exception of some advanced functions in the sequencer and stuff.
@SorchaSublime
@SorchaSublime 4 года назад
@@bobyatron7525 I mean, yeah im assuming that this is less than its bigger brother, I thought that was the point. and yeah you can get a 37 for cheaper second hand, but the same will apply to the 25 eventually surely?
@thisjustin77
@thisjustin77 4 года назад
@@SorchaSublime correct. if you want a smaller foot print. this is a good purchase. if you are more into knob per function. then more or less the 37 is the way to go. I personally have a little phatty. I dont mind menu diving but that's just me.
@SorchaSublime

@@thisjustin77 yeah IMO this has a lot of appeal as a little sister system to the 37. Its slightly smaller, slightly different and slightly cheaper.

What are you using to achieve the waveform oscillator display? I find it super helpful to understand what is happening as you design the patches, would love to use one with all of my gear whenever I'd like but not sure how to accomplish this. I wish more synths would take a note from Korg Minilogue (which I have), this feature is super helpful built right into the synth.
