This is pretty left field and doesn't even really qualify, but I always adored how American Psycho uses a song of Bowie's called There's Something In The Air during the end credits. It's a notable entry for me in that subtle way. For use of his songs in a film I have to just go all in on Moulin Rouge, when Ewan McGregor sings snippets of Heroes to Nicole Kidman... that's high on the list too

I was in tears back in early 2016 after Bowie died... it took me SIX MONTHS to come to terms with it. Quite a sight. About the only other person I've felt so acutely for for in their passing was George Harrison.

I cannot wait! I'm seeing this and "Pearl" this weekend. I love great movie weekends! I've been a Bowie fan since I was a kid in the 70's. The fact the he kept changing was actually kind of frustrating as it was happening (for me!) But looking back on his life and career, it seems monumental, and completely daring. I don't think any other musician/band went through more unique phases and personas. Or at least I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I liked it, although it was long 3hrs. I just saw Moonage Daydream, and have a few thoughts on it. I can sit and watch Bowie all day long, so it surprised me when I found myself feeling this movie is too long. Perhaps they could have cut the few pieces of footage that were repeated, and cut back on some of the neon psychedelic graphics inserted throughout the movie that seemed to be an added distraction. I realized the filmmaker was aiming for an immersive experience, but really, isn’t Bowie’s life colorful enough without all the psychedelia? There were a few production issues as well. Many times, Bowie was narrating and I could not hear him over the loud music. I want to hear what he had to say-I’ve already heard all the music. Bowie worked with many great artists over the span of his career, so it seems there could have been at least a montage of those people (The Spiders from Mars, Iggy, Freddy, Lou, just to name a few). Also, I found it interesting that both wives were pictured, but neither of his children were. In fact, there was no mention at all that he was a father. I’d be curious to know why. There were, of course, many things I did like about this movie: his eclectic artistry and intelligence were showcased, great choices of music used, some new footage was shown--which was worth the ticket price, and the concert scenes were fabulous. That being said, I walked out of the movie with a somewhat bad taste in my mouth. It left me with the impression that he was a sad, isolated, lonely person. As someone who has been following Bowie since his Ziggy days, I feel this is a big misrepresentation of who he was as a person and artist. I have to remind myself that this is one filmmaker’s take on Bowie, and not the all-encompassing “truth”. He was going for a feeling-not a documentary. It’s just that the feeling for me does not ring true to my own Bowie experience. I hoped I would never see a Bowie biopic in my life, because NO ONE can play Bowie. So I am happy that this movie has been made. I’ll likely even go see it again. If you haven't yet seen it, stay till the credits are finished. There's a little surprise at the end.
@BreakfastAllDay

I rewatched it tonight, literally half an hour ago, same theater, time, etc and it was an unconscionable slog. It plays the same footage over and over again. Its almost formless and it drove me nuts this time. I think 'experience' is the key word here, its a shit biopic, but if your in the mood for it, on first watch its really something.

You know, it's not so much about being hard on the work made. I'm reminded around 2000 he released Omikron. It wasn't much of a video game but it had these musical performances by bowie which are just no different then the mocap digital actors we see today. It was crude with 2000s graphics, mapped on textures onto low poly models, but it's unique idea. With that, my favorite use of bowie, Life Aquatic, it's not bowie's voice, but it's in French and sweet.

Just watched last night and really liked it. Yes, I'm a mega fan, BUT, we've seen most of this footage and sound bites before. For a man that had a solid 5 decade career, a good third or so, seems to dwell on (and frequently revert to) the Ziggy period yet the latter part of his life is sadly missing where I feel he was the most introspective as an artist and family man. The IMAX squareish ratio made sense since much of the content was originally framed for TV (and MTV). 8 to 9 (out of 10) from me...

My very first encounter with Bowie's song is actually from the Walter Mitty remake from Ben Stiller. I think the movie was pretty good and they used the re-recorded version of Space Oddity with Kristen Wiig. That song fits perfectly with the evocative imagery that helps drive the mood of the movie. Modern Love in Mauvais Sang. Noah Baumbach paid homage to that scene in Frances Ha. Best use of a David Bowie cover: The Feelies, in Something Wild, performing Fame while Jeff Daniels dances. Gotta add that I've seen The Feelies at least a dozen times. Neither of those tunes are even in my top 50 Bowie favorites, but they work within the context of the scenes. In my original comment, I wrote: 'I really don't want to see clips and/or videos I've seen already. Guess what? Other than roughly 20 to 25 of concert footage from his Ziggy days....The director, writer, etc took way tooooo many images from commercially released videos. And the use of those terribly annoying quick snippets of images drove me nuts! He overdid those to the max! At some point, I was beginning to get a headache...I never get headaches! The film jumped around so damn much along with the use of useless 'artsy-fartsy' vintage clips were just a waste of time in my opinion. If I were to imagine what could have flashed through the guy's mind gasping his final breath, it would be this 'Doco'. I remember I was so depressed the day Bowie died I turned to RU-vid and found myself watching Abba perform Waterloo 11 times back to back, 11 different performances; it might have been 20. Baffling and disappointing. So much footage cut and pasted from well known sources - Cracked Actor - Ziggy the movie - Ricochet …. He had access to the entire archive and spent 2 years watching it. Where was it ? And the Bowie life philosophy got pretty cringey by the end. Bowie was sooooo much more than this gushing fan take - funny witty and silly. Barely seen here

I don’t like Bowie’s music getting used in movies. I think Bowie was about uniqueness and wasn’t interested in the mainstream, with expectation to the 80s.

And yet his music get used so much. It's so evocative in creating a mood.

Being a Bowie fan since the 70s. I feel a tad disappointed. My god it was so overlong. I found the dark kaleidoscopic mishmash of visual & aural psychedelics unintelligible & pretentious. Bowie philosophical wittering on about the nature of time, life and other cosmic ethereal twaddle was almost laughable... No mention of real flesh and blood characters like Angie Bowie, Mick Ronson, Mike Garson, Iggy Pop etc. Much of his incredible and life-altering music got lost in a sea of unfocused otherworldly noise and jabbering... Finally what the f**k was the girl with tail about? Will not be buying the DVD.

@@BreakfastAllDay The truth is. I could not connect to it. Unlike the Bowie exhibition at the V&A museum. Where I felt a surge of emotional pride in this Bromley man who had once lived not far from me... Despite my misgivings I still miss him.
