Very short and easy hike along the Red River to Moonshiner Arch. This hike took place late October 2022. Thanks for watching! Connect with Smell N Roses: linktr.ee/smel... #smellnroses #redrivergorge
Me and a buddy of mine were forced to spend the night under that arch back in the early 1980s due to major thunderstorms. We had been much further down Douglas Trail and were hiking out after an overnight stay. We had fully loaded packs and got caught by the storms, the river was up and made the rest of the trail impassable. At the time we didn't know there was another way back to the bridge above the arch! So we spent a very damp night with water running through the arch and down the hill while the rain just kept coming. Unforgettable weekend of my youth! FYI the area roped off above and behind the arch has been that way since at least that time, I think it is riddled with sink holes. The 'area under recovery' signs are a rouse.
@@potatothorn Yea, wading through the river in the dark didn't seem like a reasonable option. Back then, there were no rules about camping around arches and rock shelters...or they weren't enforced.
Thanks man yeah I thought you had probably been to this one. It is a nice one. Haha I didnt even know the name of the trail. I only went to the arch and back so I cant really comment on it other than a few nice river views.
Thanks so much! I guess I mainly pick out spots by scouring over maps and aerial photos, when I find something that looks like it has potential I’ll try to cross reference with other sources.
beautiful hike and wow that's a big arch! looks like a good shelter, i see a comment below you can hide from rain under there, awesome ! thanks for taking us with you.
