The Moose (Alces alces), also known as the black deer is a large deer species native to Eurasia and North America, it is the world's largest living deer species, it is the sole extant member of its genus and the subtribe Alceina that belongs to the tribe Capreolini of the subfamily Cervinae (Old World Deer), with the roe deer (genus Capreolus) that are the sole extant genus of the subtribe Capreolina being the closest living relatives of the moose, the moose is one of the only few pecorans to have a proboscis, the other being the saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica), there are over ten recognized moose subspecies: the †Caucasian Moose (Alces alces caucasicus), the South European Moose (Alces alces polandensis), the North European Moose (Alces alces alces), the Central Asian Moose (Alces alces pfizenmayeri), the Amur Moose (Alces alces cameloides), the Chukotka Moose (Alces alces buturlini), the Alaskan Moose (Alces alces gigas), the Rocky Mountain Moose (Alces alces andersoni), the Yellowstone Moose (Alces alces shirasi), and the Algonquin Moose (Alces alces americanus).
