Refreshing to see honest self assessment, so many people these days fail to do that and try to blame something or someone else. Risk management is hard because fun things sometimes have to be put off or canceled. You experienced what is called a "cumulative effect" a bunch of small issues that by themselves are not concerning, but added up can lead to a serious issue. I think a lot of people who watch this will start to make a mental check list that has definite "Go/No Go" points on it that should keep them out of the worst situations. Sorry you had such a bad time, but glad your still here to talk about it. Cheers.
I haven’t been in Moosehead in about 16 years. Very beautiful and peaceful up there. On the way to Lily Bay there’s this house with a well, I use to fill up jugs of water. So fresh and so clean. Funny fact. That guy Jack that’s my ex father in law. Such a nice guy and always willing to help someone. Especially a “newcomer” Great video left you a 👍
We had to do the same thing Lake Trout fishing up the Gunflint trail. Got the sleds off by dark but had to leave the sleigh and all the gear to freeze in and chisel out in the morning. Sucks thinking about it all night until the next morning! 😕
Joe u are amazing and it would b a dream to fish with u my son and I . I have never fished main but I watch all your videos still love the one the ?? Legend took a bet and whent swimming in ice water .
They are working on fixing it I guess but there is a 17lb and 13lb I heard are leading the derby on moosehead right now. It should be a way better fishery than it is .
I've been going up to Moosehead since I was born, and I own a place on the West outlet in Rockwood. I have many memories of getting stuck in the slush out on the lake haha.. It's never a fun time. We had to leave an ATV out on the lake overnight one time because it was so buried. Came back in the morning and drove it out because it was so cold that it had all frozen up. Moosehead is no joke. It can be very intimidating if you're not familiar with the area.
About the big wide track sleds. They are heavier and when they get stuck it’s lots more weight to get out. We stuck a skandic SWT and it was way harder to get out than just an older long track. The older ones can be lighter but may be hard to get replacement tracks for. I am enjoying your winter trips.
Great video Joe. You handled the situation very well, you will enjoy the good times even more. Turn those lemons into lemonade. Looking forward to the next video. Stay safe and tight lines.
loving these videos man..but yes a better sled for sure..i've hit some slush spots this year fishing and i'm so glad I had the power I did..feels like you hit the brakes hitting that slush ..so nasty and can ruin your day real quick..
Last winter I got stuck in the slush on Lake Vermilion in Mn, sub zero and dark as well. Just so you know the bigger snowmobiles get stuck too, mine is a 700 with a136 paddle track. Love your videos, keep it real.
To be fair we were riding double, probably would have been traveling a little faster if solo and just the metal dogsled behind. My guess is I would have just flew right across the slush pocket. But wow what a experience to remember. Buried my truck on Lake of the Woods this year, a year later to the day.
Dude, as a life long Mainer who spends many months in the Northern Maine Woods, I appreciate your honesty regarding your mistakes. I really hope that those who are watching this video understand that this is serious stuff and it needs real, in depth planning prior to your trip. We love the outta staters but we hate the outta staters! Love your video and became a subscriber.
You know it my friend! Thank you, I’ll go more into depth about the seriousness too on future episodes. I have done this type of stuff for so long I forget sometimes about people just starting out and explaining the dangers. I explained a little more in depth In my two part series getting stuck solo camping last year. Thanks again. Greatly appreciated
I don’t have the answers I only see the results. Normally everyone says a bass or introduction ruins a lake or a species without looking at the results or data. It’s easy to blame our mismanaged fisheries on a scapegoat and just say well that’s why, pointing the finger. But rarely do people look at how great a fishery can be after an introduction. Moosehead has had bass established for over 20 years now and no one can argue about the mega trophy brook trout it’s been pumping out.
Was just up on Allagash lake. Skied across with a sled behind, kept breaking through into slush and freezing up skis and sled. Oh well, good for the constitution.
Should get a high lift jack to add to the arsenal of gear. Then you could lift the sled up clean it off and be more manageable? Other idea is get a come along and long tow strap and keep your auger with you so u can drill a hole and put some kind of anchor point in the hole so you can winch it out til you get your new sled.My friends all laughed at me for having a 4500lb winch on the front of my quad til i had to pull his quad and 3ft of packed slush off the lake this weekend and a pick up that was stuck in an unplowed parking area that couldn’t get out.Ya gutta be ready for the worst when you do the adventures we do it could cost ya very badly.I love your videos ! Hope the rest of your trip went better cant wait to see the vids!!
Gotta experience those crazy outside-the-box days and overcome them. So when you do get newer more capable equipment - you can go even further, do more... And still come out smelling like a rose...
I love fishing and camping Moosehead, never ice fished it, way to confusing. Indian Hill in Greenville is an awesome store. Had a guy make me some beaded 9-3’s for trolling a couple years back. My nephew’s request and he nailed the Salmon. Was an awesome time for 3 days. Looks like you had way to much fun. Got to love Maine Ice 🤦🏼♂️
Just discovered your channel recently Joe.. my wife and I enjoy your adventures.. your positive attitude is awesome.. as a fellow Mainer I've been where you are.. Keep the videos coming..
I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now. Enjoy them a lot. Maine looks very similar to Northern Ontario. Greetings from Thunder Bay, Ontario 🇨🇦🌲☀️❄️🎣
Thanks Joe, not everyone shares the trials and tribulations! We have all been there, like you said and I agree so important, how you deal with the lows is what counts. Everyone can win(well no not everyone knows how to win) but it’s how you deal with loss. Looking forward to day 3! Take care. Bob.
Slush! Oh yeah I got stuck about 25-30 years ago on Rangeley Lake snowmobiling with my grand parents and their friends. We hit a slush pocket had to have been 100 yards. Took us 2 hours, 2 people pulling on skis while 1 pushed and gassed it, go 10-20 feet walk back do the same with the next sled, 6 sleds total! We literally fell into the Road Kill Cafe, panting, soaked, and starving! I will never forget that!
Dude I so miss your FLW stuff! And your bass fishing vids...please consider doing a few this season. Watching them helped my wife and I win team of the year and had 5 wins and several 2nd and 3rds. Thank you!
Thank you so much, glad I was able to help. Possibly in the future. Right now during open water season I run our family business and am immersed in the community and the business so I want to direct all of my focus and energy towards that but I definitely miss it and making open water videos too. Thanks again
Glad you got that sled out before it froze in. Hopefully, the rest of the trip is better for you. Some friends were up there the past 5 days fishing. Tell me what size Otter sled are you using?
I fished spenser bay last September cout some nice salmon went with my fatherinlaw he past on oct 5th we knew it was his last fishen trip he got some salmon but he wanted a brook trout so badly before he died I miss him so much rip kenneth mann
This is my home! Born and raised right at the hospital in town. Whole fandamnily lives up there. There is no closer community than the sportsmen in that area. If you ask for help, and didn't receive it... you didn't ask a real mainer ;)
For sure the people are amazing! The community is special. Ironically the two men who helped are from New Jersey and extended stay here during the winter for the past few decades. Great people!
It is great that a large majority of out of staters that come up this way respect the ecosystem just the same as you and I. Hopefully you have better luck this weekend for the derby if you'll be in attendance. Shouldn't be quite as slushy.
Is that the case.? I don’t know a lot about it other than they are restricting where we fish now due to spawning brook trout, have they saturated it with too many stocked trout?
@@JoeHollandFishing Brook trout have never been stocked in moosehead...they get stocked in the lake behind it..and over the years came up the trib That connects them..technically their wild brookies...still an awesome fishery either way
Question for you...what do you think of Drysuits? I fish remote and alone at times, like you. I've been thinking about wearing a lightweight Gortex drysuit under my Striker Ice suit. I also take my girls out, I just constantly worry when they are with me, even when I guess I shouldn't. Maybe I'm just getting old and scared, I don't know.
Everyone in Greenville are great people willing to help anyone out they will love the beer u hit it right on the head when u bought them beer that's a great gift for anyone in greenville they love their beer or brandy coffee brandy lol
I am relatively new to using a snowmobile ice fishing so this is a genuine question. Would a studded track make any difference to get through slush like that?
I actually studded my track after last season. It helps on glare ice and with small amounts of snow and slush but in the deep stuff it doesn’t help at all,
Wicked episode joe! Always push through the tough times to get to the good times , I really really hope and pray that someday you can RU-vid for a living because you sir have a lot of talent for telling us your story so please everyone subscribe and comment let’s help joe grow his channel he deserves it
