Mopar electronic ignition upgrade to GM HEI module. Cheap Dodge high energy ignition conversion!

I daily drive my 1968 D100 and it was having trouble starting. Turns out it was probably just the ignition ballast resistor but I despise porcelain resistors anyhow and I have more GM spare parts around my place than Mopar parts so I decided to convert it all over. This is a great way to clean up the wiring and get more readily available parts. It took a couple hours to complete the project and I've put several hundred trouble free miles on since then. Thanks for watching!
Parts used were Standard brand ignition module part number LX301T

I did this with a Tractor, infact, I took a video of it, still works a treat. Anywho, thought I'd add a comment worth mentioning here. The important tip to remember when using the GM module is to use a late 70's part, pre computer days. I converted my old 74 Dodge (D-200 318) that I built a wrecker on about five years or so ago. Since I don't drive the truck regular I tend to let things go and fix when I must. For a year or so it seems after it gets warmed up that it has to wind up and when the key is released it will start. I had a lot of Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler vehicles through the years and this truck starts real similar to one the resistor has failed on. I have flipped the plug over on these and sometimes get lucky when starting by winding it up and when releasing the key they would start. When I converted mine I added a relay to switch the power to the ignition since these vehicles can have some opportunities around getting low voltage to things that causes things to fry. My conversion has worked well for a few years, but seems something has changed. I rewired it back when I converted the ignition. Bypassed the amp gauge (it was burnt up) wired through the firewall plug as it was fried on the ignition wiring go thru. Had to change the ignition switch and headlight switch due to melted plugs or shorted wires. Added relays on the lights to take the load off the light switch too. Any suggestions?

That ballast resistor looked good to me. What makes you think there was something wrong with it? What did the ohm meter going through it show? If you had a 4 pin box (common parts store purchase) one of the resistors, I think it's 5 ohms, isn't even needed.
@MortskeRepair
@MortskeRepair 3 года назад
I just used everything that was in the 1976 D100 donor truck. I think it was the starting circuit on the ballast resistor was all that it would have needed but the wiring mess just drove me nuts! And I speak fluent GM. Thanks for watching!

@@MortskeRepair The side with two wires is "Start". Opposite is is where the "run" current enters and goes through the resistor. If the ballast burns out, only Run is affected. It starts, then dies when the key is moved from start to run. Sometimes it does the opposite. Won't start during cranking but ALMOST starts as key moves to run.. That's a wiring issue.
@MortskeRepair
@MortskeRepair 3 года назад
@@auteurfiddler8706 That's what it would do, if I put a jumper to the coil it would run. It would pop off if you let off the key from crank just in time. It had power going to the ballast resistor but I don't keep them on hand and wanted to be done with it. Had I been in a pinch or wanted to keep it OG I would have dug into it more and put a new one on. Thanks for the info tho!
@MattsRageFitGarage
@MattsRageFitGarage 2 года назад
@@auteurfiddler8706 We had a 78 B200 van for many years. I can remember several times it wouldn't start, no tach needle jump while cranking like usual, let off the key and it fires right up and runs fine. Had several ballast resistors fail that way. Not sure why they didn't just use a resistor wire on that system, never seen one of those fail.
@auteurfiddler8706
@auteurfiddler8706 2 года назад
@@MattsRageFitGarage Well, the ballast (wire or resistor) is used when the key is in run but bypassed when it is in "start." So it sounds like your ballast wasn't bad. It could be the ignition switch itself or wiring. Some guys with cars with ballast wires WISH they had ballast resistors, Mopar style. When the wire is burned out, it is harder to find the problem than with a resistor.

Im trying to find a old Dodge d or w 100 long bed truck. I got an evil idea. I was given a Plymouth 440 TNT big block V8 that's already bolted to a M72 4 speed stick. All rebuilt an ready to put into something Fugly as all get out. Edit: I build everything I drive outta junkyard parts an home made parts sumtimes. Cuz sum parts caint be found cheap an easy, sum parts ya gotta make yerself. Fer example, say ya got a issue with random full throttling while driving, or ya wanna set up an antitheft device no one has, fix up an old household light switch on the main power line to the fuel pump. Making yer vehicle not only idiot proof, but also giving yerself a kill switch fer in case of mechanical malfunction that is usually unforseen. I can name several times when I wish I had done this, so I started trying it an it's actually alot easier to do than I first anticipated. Good luck with that sweet pie pan Mopar bro. I hope to own one myself, preferably a long bed. Cuz I got a idea to make an evil daily driver that is useful fer everything I can do.

I tried this mod on my 1979 Dodge 360. It started a couple of times but mostly would not start. I removed and bench tested the distributor with a variable speed motor while monitoring it with a multi channel digital oscilloscope to determine the minimum rotor revs/sec required for it to trigger an output from the Chinese version GM HEI module. As I recall it needed very precisely a minimum of 1 rotor rev/second. Then I put the distributor back in the engine and measured the actual rotor revs/second when cranking my 360 with a freshly charged battery. It was very slightly below 1 rev/second. Hence slightly too low to trigger a spark most of the time. An original GM module, and/or a battery with more cranking capacity, and/or a newer higher power starter motor might have worked okay. However I decided to return it to original instead.

Looking for tune-up advice, how to get the best fuel efficiency. upgrading does sound like less maintenance but questioning ROI Return On Investment? btw the car has sat for 8 years and running well on warm days. but if I don't let it warm up 20* F or colder and try to drive off after 10 min it seems rough until it gets to operating temp. also after 45 to 1hr idle to op temp. it will kill the motor most of the time when I change gears R or D.
