Compounding (also referred to as composition) is a word-formation process that involves at least two base forms (lexemes). This unit introduces the basic techniques of classifying compounds semantically as well as the options for defining compounds according to their combinatory possibilities.

We confine ourselves to 15 minutes per video, since longer videos of this kind are hard to cope with. This means that we have to decide which aspects of a topic are most important. We will mention compound stress in a further video about suprasegmental aspects of PDE phonology.

I've been watching your videos for several hours straight, now. I'm sure at least some of us could cope with a longer video here or there just fine. Either way, twenty minutes is a healthy length. Love your videos. Fascinating stuff.

As said in the video: Synthetic compounds are special types of endocentric compounds where the head always has a verbal base (in our example "bus-driver", "driver" is the semantic head, where "driver" is a derivative of the verb "drive").Copulative compounds, by contrast, do not have a true semantic head at all. In our example "fighter-bomber", both, "fighter" and "bomber" could be the semantic head.

I like your lessons a lot, thank you so much. I am thinking of doing a project on compounding and blending. Could you please give me some suggestions? Thank you in advance.

I really profited from this lecture of yours. Could you please upload the difference between a morph and a morpheme in detail? i watched one of yours but that lasted only a minute and wasn't of much help to me. I anticipate your positive response as soon as possible.

Good to hear that you like our stuff. The details about morphs and morphemes can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Stx1YsgfBhw.html (esp. from 2:35 onwards)

I did understand the difference between endocentric and exocentric compound, It did help me!! What can you say about: Iron man? Or Spider man? Do you think is a kind of endocentric or exocentric compound? Or is it another kind of compound? I ask because I would like to use those examples in oral presentation at the university. I hope your answer

I can not see the diference between exocentric X coopulative compounds nor between endocentric X synthetic compounds. :(

Hello, I would like to thank you for your very helping and interesting videos. My question is : how do we know that a compound is coordinate or subordinate ?

Future Linguist Zülal I spent a few months to learn German. Yet, all the same: it was not as easy as abc. 😛
