Derivation creates new words by the addition of affixes or by non-affixational processes of word-formation, which are phonologically restricted in many ways. This unit discusses affixation and conversion, the two central processes according to which derivatives can be formed in English.

Sorry for not having answered any sooner. RhamosVhailejh is right. The verb clearly consists of two morphemes and is derivational: take > mis-take, mis-took, mis-taken, meaning: to understand sth. wrongly. And the noun mistake was derived from the verb by means of conversion (in fact in the 16th century for the first time). Today, we probably feel the noun MISTAKE to be one unit in the sense of FAULT.

I may not be the professor, but your question seems to have gone unanswered for ten months, so if you would like an opinion, I would think that yes, "mis-" is a negative prefix in "mistake." It can also be found in words such as "misunderstand" or "misappropriate". With "mistake" meaning to take/interpret or do something incorrectly, it would seem like two morphemes to me.

Hi professor, how do I know when a word is derivational or not? Is there a dictionary to check it? For instance, I know that MISLEAD has two morphemes, but what about the word MISTAKE? Is MIS a prefix here? Thanks in advance!
