I have two BK16's. One stock the other modded. Removed coating, polished and patina-ed blade and made G10 scales that fit my meat hooks better. I made a kydex sheath with a ferro rod. The spine has been worked to a 908 and strikes sparks beautifully. I LOVE my 16!
i guess Im asking randomly but does anyone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot my account password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.
@Zyaire Karson Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I have the Mora Heavy Duty Companion, it came with a 27 degree edge, and was cleared for light batoning, but since I do not split wood with a knife I redid the edge to 24 degree's, so its actually now sharper. The Bk-16, which I just got has a 20 degree flat grind and a deeper belly then my Mora and it is nearly razor sharp. I suspect you could make the Mora just as sharp by changing the edge bevel. P.S. I picked the Heavy Duty Companion over the Garberg because the HD Companion was so much cheaper.
I have my BK16 out right now having a 90 degree spine and patina put on it. Excited to get it back! That is cool that you changed the angle for a better edge. Thanks for watching!
Great video Dan. I think it comes down to a person's budget. Mora may not be as good as those super expensive knifes, but as you said, they are good knifes 🤠
Hi Mark! I sent you an email a few weeks ago about purchasing some of your handles for the becker bk16, but I havent heard back. Would you sell a set of those scales like the ones you made for dan or the ones on your personal bk16? Thanks!
@@kculbert7789 Sure can! Take a look at my facebook page to see others I have done. Leave contact information and we can work it all out. Thanks for reminding me. I guess I didn't get the message. Sorry!
Good video! Which has the longer handle? More comfortable? My hand always feels a little squished on the Garberg, but don’t necessarily want to buy a BK16 if that handle is even shorter (which is what a quick Google search tells me, but that may be wrong). Maybe the contour of the Becker handle makes up for not being longer though? I’m right at the border of L and XL gloves. Thanks!
Check out the handles at The Knife Connection on the internet for the BK16. They are Awesome and mak a huge difference. As far as factory, I honestly don't think either one is very good.
So you stropped your scandi grind? It is no longer a scandi grind then. In Scandinavia we like to keep our (scandi ground) knifes sharp, so we carry with us a little (wet)stone. In norwegian "brynestein" or just a "bryne". Off course today, many use a diamond stone rather then a traditional wet stone. I am a big fan of the Kbar Becker line of knifes. I have amongst others two bk16's, that I mostly use for skinning and culling. I also have 2 bk2, 2 bk7 a bk9 and an unused bk 17. I can tell you hell freezes over before my bk16 beats any of my scandi ground knifes in typical bushcraft tasks.
I switched to flat grind, and occasionally Sabre. Works better for me. With the help of a friend, we designed the Ochoco Bush Knife. You might check out the video never used a better small bushcraft Knife!
Obviously I like the garberg I really wish I got the BK-16 with upgraded handles rather than the BK-2 but we all make mistakes. The flat ground bk16 has an advantage with slicing over the garberg but is take the garberg for wood working notching Fireboards batoning small logs but if I was hitting a fish skinning a dear or regular food prep because of the flat grind which has a grind closer to a kitchen knife than a woodsman knife in my opinion but I believe it’s scientifically proven flat grinds are great slicers compared to scandi though scandi grinds are easy to find the sharpening angle and like I said it digs into hard stuff like wood better for bushcraft.
I made the same mistake. The BK2 is pretty terrible at knife things. Not to be rude, but in more capable hands I think the garberg would be far better than the bk16. I have an Esee 4, which has a similar grind and blade shape. No way does it even come close to the garberg in feathersticks and wood work. His feather stick technique was lacking to say the least. Hard to judge it that way.
Dan, when I retire, I plan to spend time in central Oregon. John day area mainly. Plus Christmas valley at a relatives. Exploring, fishing and metal detecting
The garberg comes with a microbevel, so not true scandi. Resharpen to a zero grind and you’ll have a much sharper blade. Should dig into wood much easier than the Becker.
