Hultafors is way stronger. They can handle more demanding tasks better like batoning. Not just the blades are stronger but also the handles. The Mora Robust was Mora's answer to the increasing popularity of the Hultafors GK but still the GK is stronger and cheaper.

@DTL I fully agree. Hammer grip, ice pick grip, reverse grip, it doesn't matter. And very easy to clean. For really small hands it might be a bit bulky but for me it's perfect.
@stevanoutdoor
@stevanoutdoor 2 года назад
@DTL I did the same. Convex the secondary bevel I mean. But that's a choice of course. And SK5 is indeed a great and tough steel. Not stainless but a great steel.

The handle of the GK is highly comfortable when doing hard and long periods cutting. The part between the thumb and index finger feels good because of the thick handle. Where thinner handles press into that area and create a hotspot.. The GK is really a hard working knife.

It's the difference between all you want vs all you need. When I founded the Dutch Bushcraft Association (non profit) in 2011 (I now have 7 and soon 8 in different countries) I was looking for a strong and affordable knife for myself, my instructors and most of all the students. Some small camp knife that doesn't break the bank. Had my eye on this Hultafors GK, because batoning is part of the course, and they were kind enough to send me a box of them for testing. So we did. My personal one I used also for the students to teach them batoning and they sure did hit the spine at the wrong angle a lot and with way to much force than needed. I drilled a lanyard hole in the handle (paracord size) and combined this with a larger indentation on one side for thicker drills and a smaller indentation on the other side for thinner drills when using the bow drill. It works great as a bearing block also. I have no idea what this plastic is they use but it's extremely tough. A section of the spine towards the point I filed down to 90 degrees and it works great with firesteels. The edge I just stropped so it's a secondary convex now (scandivex). This first GK knife is still in use by me and still as solid. Is it all I want as small camp knifes? NO. I just like knives so like to have and test more. Is it all I need as small camp knife? YES.

You can cut off that little tip inside the of clip, with a knife. Hultafors demonstrated that in one of their videoes. Then it gets easier to mount on the belt. To unmount the holster. You can try to get the knife in and pry the clip open, as demonstrated in the same video.

I'm sure you've figured it out by now. But that little bit of plastic inside the belt loop simply locks the sheath onto the overall button. If you want to use it on your belt, you're meant to slice that bit of plastic off. Also you can unlock the belt loop easily by sticking the blade inside it and twisting. Mora sheath is a way better design though. Wish they'd copy that.

I just got 4 of these and I'll probably buy more before Christmas. Great gift knives for non-knife and knife folk alike. If I had time I'd get new sheaths made in leather. But hey, I barely do Christmas and NEVER shop on time.

Some knives are made better than others and because of that these knife tests are legitimate to help others make their decisions. That said, some of these tests make knives break when that doesn't necessarily mean anything. With enough effort, you can cause a railroad spike to break.

Had my Hultafors knives for at least 10 years. 10 years HARD use is NO problem for these knives.. but I don't like the sheats UNLESS I wear my working pants that have a atachment point for Mora/Hultafors (standart for scandinavian work pants). BTW only the GK has the secondary bevel. My GK has sort of a convex bevel by now.

I paid 7,99$$ for my Hultafors GK here in germany, and it`s worked a lot for me, one of my favorite knives that I regularly recommand to beginners and for people who want an afforable work-horse knife. I like it more than the Mora Companion or Robust. The edge on mine was actually a scandi-vex, meaning it started out as a scandi but the second bevel was convexed, which worked great for me, but probably wasn`t meant to be that way xD My reviews a bit older but you can still watch it on my channel.

Hey Cedric, I have a review request, can you test to total destruction all the common scandi type knives, including sawing off the handle material so the tang is visible? Bonus points if you do it while dressed as Rambo... ;-)

Funny to see how plain, boring but very funtional products from Sweden catch on abroad. Now it's Mora and Hultafors. Previus it was Fjällräven, Volvo, Minecraft and IKEA. Growing up in Sweden in the 70's you would get severly bullied If you turned up in school in anything Fjällräven! If you got a Morakniv for christmas present you rather not tell your freinds about it. A lot of carpenters in Sweden use to carry two knifes, one sharp for wood cutting and one as a brute multitool.

I find if you loosen up your wrists a bit while you're removing the secondary bevel the 1st and 2nd bevels will merge into a scandivex and then it will be a lot stronger than a scandi but with the same carving benefits. DBK has a good vid on it.

Like if you agree: There is absolutely nothing wrong with Hultafors products but in this day and age the Mora Robust is probably the best knife for the money if you intend to do actual crafting with the knife. I have used it extensively, built fences with it and even carved out axe handles from split Birch logs which is extremely heavy work using a single tool. Out of all the knives I have its always the best tool for the job whenever I need a craftknife. AND I HATE IT FOR IT becuase its a totally boring knife to have. I got a vertical carry leather sheath for it which sort of made it more fun but it will always be a painful reminder that most of my knives are overpriced as hell.

Hah, well they've got so many knives to go through and so many followers I'm sure they don't care to change back to how they were. The last straw for me was the Benchmade 162 "review". A mate of mine has one and I handled it for a bit and could see some obvious good and bad points. None of which were mentioned in their video. They spent the entire clip dancing around and doing whatever. Good for entertainment if you're into that sort of thing, but you can't rely on them for good info any more - they just miss so much stuff. At least we got Pete here picking up the slack :p

They are very tough knifes. I destroyed one intentionally - took some time I tell you ... also a 3 pound steel mallet and a tree stump. Unfortunately the sheath isn´t very good and the grind needs to be tuned in order for the knife to cut anything properly. Cost me about 7.50€. I now bought the bushcraft version. Same knife with a coated blade, better grind (high scandi with microbevel, cuts like crazy) and better sheath (added fabric belt loop) for 2,5 times the price. But it´s still cheap and in my eyes a much more usable knife right ot of the box ... it does not come in a box :)

Agree that the sheath is not the best one for belt carry. It is a Swedish work knife and the Swedish work pants all have this button to carry the knife. For carrying it on a button you keep the sheath as it is. For carrying it on a belt you cut off that upstanding plastic part on the inside of the loop. They have that in an instruction video somewhere. Than it will fit a normal size belt with no problem.
@stevanoutdoor
@stevanoutdoor 2 года назад
@DTL Whatever works. I've been thinking about doing the same. Find me some old car safety belts, double them up, stitch into a belt loop and attach a strong metal button so I can attach any knife that has this button loop option.

Is the Schrade 52 a good knife otherwise ?
@theprophetez1357
@theprophetez1357 2 года назад
@@benewgillian6823 Oh yea, I love mine. It is very well balanced and versatile. Mine is well used too, but I will never hit it again with a hand forged hammer. The problem was that there was no kind of solid hardwood to be found. It was a semi swampy area so any wood I found was in a state of rot, and would not hold up ir just fell to pieces, and I wanted that fatwood. I show some of it on my channel. I found a gold mine in the woods is the name of it. I have since bought a nice Silky 240 so I now use that an the 52 to get larger slabs of it. Back to the Schrade though, it would be hard to beat its features at triple the price. I own a few knives, but that 52 is what I consider my main survival knife. Usually I back it with a Mora companion HD. I use my Moras and other knives on occassions, but none has seen as much use as that Schrade. I covered the handle with some inner tube that is stretched over it. It really helps especially when doing lots of chopping. I never had a hot spot, and it makes the grip feel even better. The coarse pattern of the original handle keeps the rubber from slipping. I also put a lanyard on it. It is just long enough to use it for the different purposes that the knife is designed for. It is very helpful and safe when chopping. At another length and wrapped around my wristbone I can whittle or make feather sticks without straining my hand, because by placing the lanyard as i do the strain is on the wrist so that your hand doesn't take all the pressure. I should do a video to show people what i mean. I have never seen anyone do this, yet it makes life in the woods so much easier. Darn I hate to ramble on, but I also have added a few items to the sheath such as; a small chain saw, two large nails, a ceramic rod for honing the knife, and a different striker for the ferro rod, and kept the knife sharpener, and I glued a piece of old leather belt to the back for strapping knifes. In addition I filed part of the spline to a sharp 90°.

It's interesting that the diagram on the packet shows the knife being hit with a carpenters hammer rather that a mallet. Hardened steel on hardened steel is supposedly a good way to cop some shrapnel to the face. I guess they are confident in the heat treat and a relatively low hardness. Just seems like something that would make lawyers cringe, especially to earn the measly profits off a $16 RRP.

Yeah, it's cheap. And apparently as tough as any knife which competes with it. While the suggestion is that it's Swedish, the package says "Swedish design". So we might have just one more Chinese-made knife. Still, it performs. My copy didn't come in a package. It was bought off of Amazon. But came (with sheath) wrapped in bubble wrap. Maybe the usage suggestions on the package were a bit too optimistic ? What I don't like is the sheath. But not for the reasons mentioned in this video. I wish that the knife were better secured in the sheath. It's good. But I'm not completely confident in it. My copy's blade , while okay -sharp, isn't that well ground. At the tip, it's different on each side. Still, it is cheap, and has stood up to many torture tests here on YT. Use it in any way you want. IF you break it, damage it, or lose it, you won't have lost much money. A very good, every day "beater" knife. At its low price, buy two. You may never need the second one.

@@CedricAda May I find the coated version for the same price in Sweden? Do you think? My aunt lives there and she's coming to Peru (where I live) so I was wondering. I've visited some websites but I can't find the real price there 😅

Pretty sure these are made in Taiwan, not Sweden.

Hultafors knives are nice. I use them for the odd jobs, opening cement sacks and so on. Whenever you need a cheap knife for hammering trough stuff and the possibility is high that you will ruin the knife - Hultafors is the right choice.
