@silentumexcubitor6747
@silentumexcubitor6747 5 лет назад
One of my first races, (I won it!), was a big mass start, Cat 4's and Citizens, (This was USCF, before they had Cat 5's), and there were several teams, with multiple riders and matching kit, and a few "gym rat" body builders whose size intimidated me. A few "veterans" with shiny new multi-$1000's bikes, etc., And me. On my first "good enough to race" road bike. I'm a big guy, but no body builder. The course was mostly flat, with a few sharp, technical turns, and a "short-sweet-n-steep" hill 1/2 way round. I needed to get to the bottom of the hill *first*, and start up with a little mini-breakaway, so I would still be in good position at the top, and on the descent. So I did that on the first lap. Put the hammer down, and WON! Your big muscles are just dead weight, without good training, tactics, fitness, etc. My BEST tip: HOLD YOUR LINE, and HOLD YOUR PLACE in the pack. These Cat 5 's look like they're doing the twitter shaky dance! That final crash was simply a lapped wheel. STUPID mistake! My training partner and I used to practice lapping wheels, and wheel rubbing. Dangerous, but worth it. I'm trying to educate, and ENCOURAGE your racing career! Trust me, it's the MOST FUN you'll ever have! And the stories to tell your grandkids! LOL Thanks for listening to an old retired roadie! (And BTW, the *energy* of the race will enable you to do better, and ride faster than your training might suggest....But the skill improvement comes AFTER you've fully rested and recovered. You'll finish the race at whatever skill level you started at....

I don't know why everyone keeps mistaking the Cat 4/5 race (C field) for the Cat 5 (D field). There were no crashes or other drama in D field in either of the two days of racing. I was in D field both days, and did my last race as a Cat 5 on the second day. All the Cat 5's I knew raced D field, and all the Cat 4's I knew raced C field. So what you are looking at here are (mostly) Cat 4 riders with a few masters sprinkled in.

One suggestion if you're going to race... Stock up on some Tegaderm - it's a bandage for burns and road rash, and it's friggin magic. With any luck, you and your husband won't ever need it, but it's maybe $20 for a massive roll online and is worth having around just in case. I went down just about two weeks ago, and the road rash is just about gone now. Not from Cat 5 stupidity - even worse. Most races have a "center line rule" which keeps one lane of traffic open. For the promoter, it's easier to pull a permit, and for the community who largely doesn't want us there in the first place, it doesn't completely block the road.

How much moving up in categories can a solo rider achieve before a team is needed?
@NorCalCycling
@NorCalCycling 5 лет назад
You can move up to a cat 1. Team racing is just different. For example, if you're a solo rider in a race with teams, put yourself in a position where teams have to chase each other. You have no obligation to chase unless you've completely missed the boat. Only follow attacks that have representation from all teams.
@rockytalkndawoods3057
@rockytalkndawoods3057 5 лет назад
Depends on how strong you are. Some guys will never do well without it, most can do okay, and then there are the talented who destroy local cat 1 races and only race pro for a year or 2. Of course it's fun being on a small team of strong smart broskis, but I can hold my own in a cat 1 field just bye watching the nature of the peleton.

How is "chasing down every break so the sprinter can win" tactics? Describes every 4/5 race and most cat 3s. The sprinter will never work for you and when he gets upgraded will never see the front of a race again and give up the sport.
@ca5ualm3dia
@ca5ualm3dia 5 лет назад
eighter way you take the chances in the races , if you let a break go and it never comes back , doesn't matter what you are you lost , so if someone goes up the road , and you have 3 guys , you can just make a bullet train , and rotate the 2 guys maybe add some more chasers , and the strategy will work ....
@carlosflanders518
@carlosflanders518 5 лет назад
Use teamwork to hold the break at 20-30s. Wear them out. Or put your guy in the break or bridge up to the break. That's teamwork. Ruining a race by closing down every attack so your guy can sprint for 6th isn't tactics.

People take their hands off the bars in cat5 because they're new to racing and less used to putting in race level efforts for long rides. If you're sore and want to stretch out who cares. That is of course assuming they're being careful that nobody is around them to risk a crash, mind you it's also not hard to maintain your line with no hands on flad road

Yeah, Cat5 is every man for himself, there is no way they can work as a team because their habilities are going to be very different, and their streghts, so for a "sprinter" in Cat5 he should just do his own work and not depend on team mates.

@ca5ualm3dia
@ca5ualm3dia 5 лет назад
i mean if you sit up and chill and the break goes you will never get back on , thats why you just have to race the race sometimes , your battle plans are always solid until the battle then you have to adapt , doesn't matter what cat you r in , if a dude attacks and team mate chases so what , if it sticks you are still left behind , its not like his team mate can deploy a tractor beam , the only thing his team mate could do is chase , catch , attack , and then sag the pace ....
@chriswitek9455
@chriswitek9455 5 лет назад
So if your goal as a team is win, which I'm pretty sure that's every teams goal, you do whatever gives the team the best odds. Only individuals are worried about their success over team success. If your team mate follows a guy at the end and they stay away your team has a 50/50 shot to win from that group. If he literally has no sprint then he just sits there second wheel and makes the other guy who attacked pull the whole time or shut it down. By being the one to follow, and not by bridging solo, justin pulled the ENTIRE FIELD up to his team mate. So they went from a 50/50 shot down to maybe 1/10. That's dumb. Chasing team mates is dumb. Dont chase team mates.
@chriswitek9455

@ca5ualm3dia
@ca5ualm3dia 5 лет назад
dude in a cat 5 race people break all the time and there is literally no chance to bring it back , so a team mate chasing an attack solo has maybe two options , if the break sticks now you have a two man break , he can attack and sag the pace , thats about it , if your ace is chilling behind say 5 dudes , and the break goes and it sticks , now what , your ace isnt going to magically recover and close say a 1 minute gap unless the two team mates attack and bring him up , and if he does attack solo to catch the break he will just be bringing the field with him , you should stick to the plan regroup and lead your ace to the break, especially if your chasing a one man solo attempt , it would be even more important if there is a 2 or more man team break , you can have your team mate chase an attack, so what he is solo and sitting on a solo wheel is doing nothing , he will get tired and now he falls of the break , ace is still way back with no chance , break sticks and the solo man wins , its not about chasing team mates , its about keeping a pace that the other guys cant match , when you have more than one team mate you can regroup and deliver him to the break , unless ace can close the gap , every situation is different , and in cat 5 races its usaly the stronger guys that break and go bye bye !!! @@chriswitek9455
