Connecting the engine to the calorifier. I've added a T (after the thermostat!) to an existing pipe of the engine coolant and added a small electric pump that circulates the water through. You can't rely on your engine's pump to do so. I've connected the pump to the first position of the engine switch (ACC?) so it turns on automatically when the engine starts. I would highly recommend plumbing it to the engine, it's "free" heat!
@canicebannon

Ah! So I was wondering about that. It has been suggested that it would make its way around on its own. But you have offered a simple solution by adding an electric pump. This is a lot easier than I thought it might be. Thank you!😀

Hi Kathy! The guy was sitting on a swing dangling down from the tree! He was enjoying the show. The boat club does a lot of activities for people with learning difficulties and other disabilities. They had just done a paddle around an hour before I set off. In fact one of them called me Captain Hook, which I was able to refute by showing them both my hands. The Strontrace was a massive learning curve. Got lots of tips from that. There plenty of work that is time consuming and that’s why I’m not too worried about it. The money will come later. On our Daf 575, the calorifier is plumbed directly from a tee off the hot and cold sides of the cooling system. There are ball valves on each side which remain shut when the engine is not running to ensure you don't get a thermo-syphon effect of the calorifier heating the engine when the diesel heater is the heat source. I'd think about plumbing the calorifier in parallel, like a radiator, instead of inline before the first rad. This way you can put a ball valve to balance the flow in the system. If you go calorifier first in line before all radiators, it'll take a long time to heat the boat as the calorifier will take all the heat energy initially.

Hi Canice. Quadtwist beat me to it - on both points. You really are making Stirling progress. And on the point of lack of Spondulux- I do the same as you. Stockpile parts for future projects because the inevitable always seems to happen. Plenty of time but no money. Or. Got the money but too busy to spend time on the boat doing the work. Stay safe. Mark K. Barge M V Sarah.

@canicebannon 6 месяцев назад
Are you saying that a simple tee on the cooling system, the water will circulate both routes without encouragement. I understand the need to shut it down after the engine has done its journey. It seems too simple. 🙄😂 I guess the engine water pump will just pull the water through no matter what route it takes…. On Jorja, the calorifier is first and the water warms up the hot water in the tank first. So yes in my narrowboat the radiators do take a while to warm up. However, off grid most of the heat come from the stove and it’s the hot water that the tank that is the primary goal especially in summer when the last thing you want is a hot radiator. However, what you’re saying is plumb the calorifier so that I can close it off and focus on the radiators first and open it up so when I want hot water first….? Is that correct? 🤔
@canicebannon
@canicebannon 6 месяцев назад
That’s why the Christmas period was so quiet of the boat front. Busy making money and then immediately spending it on a calorifier and heating system….😂😂
@quadtwist
@quadtwist 6 месяцев назад
@@canicebannon On my Daf 575, the cooling pipes coming off the engine are about 1.25 inch to the heat exchanger at the stern, and have 22mm pipes running off them to the calorifier. The water just circulates from the engine water pump. In terms of the routing from the diesel heater. Think of the calorifier as just another radiator. So, radiators are plumbed with a flow line, and a return line, and each radiator on a "parallel" between those two main lines. So, if you set the calorifier up so that the cold side goes direct into the return side of the system, it will also be running in parallel. In a radiator heating system, you use the valves on the radiator to restrict flow so that all radiators heat up evenly. You would add a gate valve onto the flow side of the calorifier so you could choke it down and balance it (so it does not take all the heat). This also means in summer, you shut the valves to all the radiators, but you can still run the diesel heater for the hot water. If you want a bit more utility (but also needs to rely on an inverter) you can build a full S plan system and use something like a nest thermostat to allow you to turn the heat on remotely when you're coming home. Sorry, this probably is easiest if drawn out instead of my terrible descriptions!
@canicebannon
@canicebannon 6 месяцев назад
@@quadtwist This is perfect. I was wondering if it was as simple as this, but couldn’t say for sure. My friend Jago, confirmed what you say will work, he wasn’t sure whether whether the pump would offer enough pressure down the 22mm pipe. Clearly it does! The eberspacher ‘s of old were not variable heat and thus you had to have one loop and no valves on the radiators and match the output. But the new one is variable heat, so I can have valves on my future radiators. It’s really good to know that running the 22mm of the engine works! Thank you so much!

Memory loss is a condition caused by having a refit project and a YT channel at the same time. The most problematic bit is that you always forget why you're doing it and simultaneously forget to quit and do something easy instead. I guess that's my weird way of saying thanks for the videos 😄 Your engine possibly has an outlet for an interior heater when the engine is used as a lorry or truck engine. Maybe it's possible to hock up the calorifier that way.
@canicebannon
@canicebannon 6 месяцев назад
There may also be a thermostatic housing that will divert water until it gets too hot or something like that! I really haven’t looked into it! Having a RU-vid channel does add layers of complexity to a project. Like only doing jobs you think will look good on RU-vid, as opposed to being a necessity!😂😂😂 Nice job on cleaning out the engine room!
@JamesBrown-ux9ds
@JamesBrown-ux9ds 6 месяцев назад
Short term memory loss is often seen as possibly related to aging and high stress and high cortisol levels in our bloodstream. I like it, I have Psoriasis, the body cortisol helps to keep the Psoriasis down😊 - Urea crema only required. And for to assist the memory I use two smartphones now 🤗🤝🤓 How about having a second reservoir - simple watertight welded steel box - circulating hot water from the engine to the interiors anyway? And maybe taking for the Ebersbacher from that. Of course with a permanent small dia shortcut allowing for cooling water to always circulate the engine to certain amount. Proper dia/min. flow to be established. (I think your engine cooling system usualy would be around 85 Celsius? A little increase to 92 or 95 in case to be tolerated? The engine thermostat at present not going for a full 104 or 105 deg Celsius at 1.1 bar like with my motobike?) ('War is a raquet - men are all the same, all over the world'.)
@canicebannon
@canicebannon 6 месяцев назад
I’m going to look into my options and see what can be done in terms of the hot water from the engine. One thing I won’t do is have an elaborate system, as I may, in the end remove the diesel and replace with electric drive in which case there won’t be hot water available from the “engine”. In summary I’ll only do it if there is a simple solution… There was a £100 difference in price between single coil and twin coil, so I’m just giving myself the option… (War is the marketing department of the arms industry.)

Hi Canice! I had to mention my love for the ducks at the end. They've taken to Jorja's garden like any other safe bit of landscape. Perhaps you can qualify as a mobile bird sanctuary. Well done! The calorifier is a nice bit of kit. The heat gun into the air intake feels like a classic, which begs the question--could you add an air heater to the DAF's intake for cold starts in winter? Something you could turn on from the helm when needed?
@canicebannon
@canicebannon 6 месяцев назад
The engine needs an overhaul. There is something fundamentally wrong with the engine. Mainly it’s worn out. It’s 50 years old. This winter has been more difficult than last winter. But there is a question about repairing it or replacing it. It comes down to cost at the end of the day. Jago, is starting work in a boat yard from the end of this month and he’s offered to give it a look over. May look into that. Though, as long as it runs I’ll keep nursing it along. What you saw on Jorja was a boat invasion!😂 The mallard was very interested in nesting opportunities!😂
