@@canicebannon All exams went well. The heritage railway I volunteer for is hopefully just weeks away from getting insurance so we can go out on the main line. Yes, there might be a "new" old train to drive on Sunday--possibly the sibling of the car I usually drive which has just finished 19,000 hours of restoration. Still some bugs to work out, no doubt, but we'll see....

I always love watching your Vrouwe Linda videos, and especially when she's cruising. But when you visit Jago on my very favourite River Deben that is especially nice. I've sadly had to part with my boat on the Deben recently for financial reasons. Very painful...

I’m so sorry you had to lose your boat. I was only there for the day and it was a nice glimpse into the little world hidden away. It’s sooooooo beautiful…. The weekend was great for Jago. He went on to sail and helm all sorts of boat. Built his confidence enormously! I can’t wait to gather back there.

Bravo! Howdy there Mr, Wizard of the Waterways and Alchemist of London’s Canals! I must first apologize for my recent dereliction of duty, leaving only one-word comments when your grand tales deserve so much more. Consider this my humble attempt to rectify that with a flourish. You see, I’ve been preoccupied with an odd culinary adventure during the great Midwestern cicada emergence, collecting ingredients for a rare delicacy. Firstly, your May 4 vlog had me enchanted. The hand pump was nothing short of marvelous, even if its full installation was delayed a wee bit. Its glory complemented the checkerboard sink tiles perfectly, a visual symphony worthy of the finest canal-side gallery. While gathering freshly emerged cicadas from Brood XIII and XIX in the early mornings, I couldn’t help but think of your meticulous craftsmanship. Moving on to the May 11 vlog, watching you crew on a Dutch barge during the Mattenschippersrace 2024 was exhilarating! The fierce competition, the spirit of camaraderie, and the fact that you did better than last year without finishing with the engine speaks volumes. You and your crew embody the true spirit of nautical adventure. Bravo! Much like preparing the cicadas by rinsing them in cold water and removing their wings and legs, your efforts were precise and thorough. Now, about your May 18 vlog-fixing the engine in 10 seconds? Sir, I tip my hat to your mechanical sorcery! Thanks to the comments, indeed. Your continued journey through Stonebridge, plumbing, and insulating the water system was as captivating as ever. The mystery engine question adds a delightful twist to your ongoing saga. As I mixed flour, cornmeal, salt, pepper, and paprika for the cicada batter, I marveled at your ability to mix practicality with adventure. And now, your latest vlog! Moving Linda until the rain sets in, finally getting the hand pump working, buying an oil lamp chimney, and laying down the pipes for the central heating system and hot water-all while helping Jago move his boat from Woodford to Waldingfield on the River Deben. This is a veritable symphony of multitasking that would make even the busiest cicada jealous. Dipping each cicada in the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and finally coating them in breadcrumbs, I couldn’t help but feel a kinship with your intricate and methodical processes. Your vlogs remind me of the great Midwestern cicada emergence happening this year, where two different species with 13-year and 17-year cycles are emerging simultaneously. This rare event creates a symphony of life, an intricate melody that mirrors the harmonious blend of your boatwright skills and adventurous spirit. Each vlog is like the synchronized chirping of cicadas, a chorus of craftsmanship and storytelling that resonates deeply. My recent dereliction of duty in commenting is like missing the crescendo of this natural orchestra, but I’m back, ready to harmonize with your efforts once more, much like the satisfying crunch of fried cicadas after a 2-3 minute fry at 350°F. P.S. Please forgive my recent brevity in comments. It’s not a lack of admiration but rather a temporary lapse in my usual verbosity due to my foray into creating Cicada Surprise Delight. P.P.S. I hope my humble missives regain their former glory and once again match the brilliance of your vlogs. P.P.P.S. If I fall short again, I fear they might hang me from the yardarms! P.P.P.P.S. What fascinating mysteries does Waldingfield on the River Deben hold? Do the ducks there practice synchronized swimming, or perhaps the local otters have a secret society? As a Freemason myself, the fraternal goings on of otters are the pressing questions that keep me awake at night, much like perfecting my cicada frying technique. P.P.P.P.P.S. Keep up the splendid work, Canice. Your videos are the highlight of my week, and I eagerly await the next chapter of your adventures. Now, back to serving my crispy cicadas with an assortment of dipping sauces. This rare treat is best enjoyed during the 2024 double brood event, a once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience where Brood XIII and XIX cicadas emerge simultaneously. Cheers, Michael

Yours sounds delicious! I don’t think I’ve ever eaten an insect intentionally. Unless you count cochineal !😂 The fact that the two species are out at the same time is probably going to bring out a lot of other creature to feed on them. I bet it’s an exciting sight. My brother is a frequent visitor to Thailand and they have a rich diet in insects… I want to try insects!😀 Thank you Michael!

“Won’t” is the operative word….. you know the chemicals used to clean waste water are imported and the cost of it went up after Brexit, so to protect the pension funds invested in water companies from losing money (if they go bust or have no dividends) they changed the law to relax their environmental obligations… we’re all implicated….

Hi Canice. I’m sure that you have thought of this but here’s my ha’psworth anyway. I saw you installing radiator hose from the calorifier to the engine position to get “free” hot water. When I did this I found that when the engine was not running, the heat was reversed back through these pipes to the engine and the hot water tank went quickly cold. My first cure was to install a non-return valve in circuit but, in practice, this restriction greatly impeded the flow and the engine was poor at delivering hot water. My solution was to remove the non-return valve and to rely on the isolating valves that I had installed anyway to shut off the circuit when the engine wasn’t running and all works well now. Another problem that I ran into was that the engine heating circuit brought the water temperature up higher than the immersion did and consequently tripped the immersion heater “over limit thermostat “ (even though it was not in use at the time). This meant that the thermostat had to be reset before heating the water using electricity. Just push in the button to reset. A future upgrade will be to fit a mechanically operated in-line tank stat and solenoid valve. Simple enough to do but it is somewhere down that long list… Keep up the good work. Regards. Mark K Barge M V Sarah Dublin.
@canicebannon
@canicebannon 5 месяцев назад
No I hadn’t!😂 I was going to isolate the line to the calorifier for the purpose of servicing, but hadn’t thought of the central heating system warming up the engine by accident…. Absolutely had no idea that the immersion would need resetting. I’m going to get onto this and investigate further. Thank you Mark

Hi Will, the drone is pretty cool. Very restricted in London, but out in the countryside it makes more sense. I don’t use it a lot, but when I do I use the footage as it’s great! You don’t need a DJI 4 pro as I have, any of the little DJI drones with 4K is enough. The sensors a good on the 4 pro but on a boat I tend to turn the sensors off and manually fly as landing on a boat is beyond the sensors ability. So buying a cheap second hand mini 3 etc is more than enough….

@@canicebannon hahah yep… top gun… it’s over. Three days of insanity. Two days of flying. The first with very fast winds and the last day with floaty soft winds. Albuquerque is the ballooning home due to its mild climate which allows us to fly year round which is impossible anywhere else. It’s surrealistic if you have never been in a desert and seen the beauty in its stark vistas but to those who have lived here England and Ireland are like the most magical places every known with lush fields and massive green trees you can hide from the sun under. I have known both and love both. It’s been too long since I’ve been under those trees. On the video/drone/photographs… I am lazy.. I have lots of footage but assembling anything into a coherent vlog is beyond me. I have to because I have too much to just hide away so I will get something out here soon..if it’s just clips of me flying about in the drone I will or maybe a mix of drone, hand and 360 video… I am inspired by you and your workflow as you just happily go about it like it’s no big deal. Hi James, no. It’s purely based on the size of the boat. The bigger the boat the more you pay… License is the fee to be on the canal and not to be confused with “driving licence” . There is no driving licence on the canal and river network… If your boat is over 20 metres in length, you are now a commercial boat and some further rules apply.
