Today the long awaited 5.0 V8 timing chain replacement on Merlin, the free LR4. Timing chain rattle, restricted performance and timing fault codes sidelined this Land Rover and nearly sent it to the scrap yard.
Feel Free to skip around in the video (It's a long one I know, but wanted to keep the repair in one video to make it easier for anyone to reference in the future).
The previous owner was a viewer and reached out to see if we wanted to save Merlin, so we made the trip down to Tennessee with another LR4 and drug it home (Quite the adventure in itself).
The LR4 towing trip video: • Land Rover Rescue! Can...
This video is a touch more in depth than our previous videos on the LR4 timing problems. Those can be seen here:
• LR4 Timing Chain Probl...
• Timing Chain Day | Get...
This isn't meant as a complete guide, but gives you a great idea on the process and what is involved in replacing the chains on the early teens Land Rovers.

The good news is they updated the chain guides to prevent the wear problem, so this LR4 should be good for many years on that front.

Great tear down. Only thing I'd suggest is, while I understand it wasn't a vehicle you were gonna keep, talk with the owner or buyer on the oil. Tech manual says 5-20 but I run and have ran mine at 5-30 for years now. The reason being as I heard from many German/UK friends was the tech sheet (for the engine) was written that way was for emissions reasons in the EU. The 3L diesel I've heard many using 5-40 even. God bless the usa 😅

It was quite a bit longer than I like to make a video, but man I didn’t want to split it up or do the job a disservice by chopping too much out. I appreciate you sticking through it haha. I think we have 5ish in our town (100k metro area). Just not Land Rover Country here. I’d like to add a 2 door to replace the LR4 daily duties, so we would increase the percentage of them here tremendously with that haha.

It’s doable, just tight in spots and in need of patience in others. With the tools and some attention to detail it’s not terrible to get the timing together correctly. I was just hoping to give an idea of how much of a job it is, even if you don’t e plan on doing it yourself you can have a touch better understanding of the process. Happy New Years! Well, you addressed the timing, but not the biggest issue I see with these engines. I pull these and do a complete tear down to remove the pieces of oil filter that plug up the oil passages and pickup tube, and also check for bearing damage. Next time your in one of those do yourself a favor and pull the 2 oil passage plugs and remove the oil filter housing. If you find debris there then there's 2x as much in the rear and the pickup tube is likely seriously restricted. The only way to properly address this is to pull the engine.

Nice Job mate. 5W-40 and 6K mile oil change interval - but just to be sure Blackstone test the oil. No pre-lube of the chains upon install? It took me 3 days to get the injectors out, had to soak the sh!t out of them, and then I had multiple the cam cover bolts shear-off. - had to drill and tap the mothers. Biggest PITA job I've ever done.
@LostCauseRanch
@LostCauseRanch 5 месяцев назад
I haven’t explored switching to 5w40 on these but was curious about it. Been thinking about trying it on my driver one to see. So that is working out for you? I just oil canned the chain before closing it up and let it crank a fair amount before the first actual startup. But no I didn’t soak it ( or bake it like some people). Broken bolts are no fun and like I said, the injectors coming out is really what makes or breaks these jobs for me. They always come out, just not enjoyably sometimes. Not near as bad as a customers BMW that had broken windshield cowling that lead to water leaking onto one direct injector and resulted in having to pull the cylinder head to remedy that one.

Very much agree with you. My daily 2010 is a HD package and I love the thing. It did just fine towing this LR4 back 750 miles. Once the timing chain is sorted they don’t seem to have anything overly out of the norm happen to them considering the complexity of some of it.

If there is a way to check the current health of our chains without complete disassembly of the front end that would be incredibly useful. For example, a combination of looking through the oil cap, audio of a healthy 3.0 or 5.0 and one that is in need of an overhaul, ideally a borescope inspection would all make for an excellent video as there are a lot of us LR4 owners with perpetual anxiety about our chains health ha

Hey LR Bro! 🙌 Thanks for a great video! Absolutely amazing 🤘 I own 2012 LR4 with same V8 5.0 in perfect condition with 65.000 miles o’clock and absolutely love this vehicle. I’m using it for overlanding mostly in the mountains during the summertime. Despite the low mileage I have already replaced timing chain for the new type. Now I clearly see what a pain in the ass it is to replace it and why did I have to pay that much. Appreciated! Since I’m passioned a lot with this car and want to keep it as long as I can, I would love to know your personal opinion regarding the oil specifications. I’m currently using 5W20 by COMMA with Ford endorsement WSS-M2C925-A as it was recommended by LR dealer. As far as I know this V8 is made by Ford (pls correct me if I’m wrong). Reply from LR global support: Please find the requested information below. There are two different engine oils that needs to look for. Using these JLR approval specifications(WSS-M2C925-A or STJLR.51.5122). I’m doing the oil change every 6K miles. Would you recommend to switch to some other oil specifications in order to make this engine’s life longer or you are absolutely fine to go with dealer recommendations of SAE 5W20 WSS.M2C925-A or SAE OW20 STJLR 51.5122?

@LostCauseRanch
@LostCauseRanch 3 месяца назад
It’s updated in 2013, so less prevalent. But we have replaced them in the 2016 3.0 supercharged v6 as well. What I’ve noticed over the years is the ones that did shorter 5-7000 mile oil changes have faired much better throughout the whole year range. The 4.4 is a solid engine, we had one customer with 300k miles without having to do anything inside the engine. But the power of the 5.0 is very nice, especially with an oversized tire.

Do you think an LR4 is worth it with a timing chain job requirement down the line, for none mechanics? I'm still undecided, while holding on to my 2002 P38?

I’m at 230,000 miles on my 2010 LR4 with the stock chains and tensioner. It’s starting to make a ticking noise until it warms up. May be time for this.

Wasn’t the timing chain issue resolved with the V6 models or less of an issue?
@LostCauseRanch
@LostCauseRanch 3 месяца назад
Vastly improved on the V6. But we still have repaired those as well. But it’s not necessarily something I would freak out worrying about. For a note, on the ones that we did replace on the updated tensioners and rails, all of them were using the factory 15,000 mile oil change schedule.

What Is The Average Cost To Have This Done? Also, I Have A 2010 LR4, And I'm Hearing My Engine. It Almost Sounds Like A Diesel Engine. Don't Have The Indicator Lights On, But I'm Sure It's A Matter Of Time. Where Can I Go To Have This Work Done?

How don you turn the engine clockwise if the bolt loosens that way??
@LostCauseRanch
@LostCauseRanch 3 месяца назад
This one was regular thread. On these engine there is potential of either normal or reverse thread on the crank bolt.
@LostCauseRanch
@LostCauseRanch 3 месяца назад
I apologize, I was backwards on that response. It is a left hand thread on this one, was mistaking a different one when I replied. But the bolt is on tight enough when it is torqued down that without the crankshaft locked you can spin the engine either way without loosening the bolt. It requires quite a bit of force to loosen it.

@LostCauseRanch
@LostCauseRanch 2 месяца назад
Yes, typically you’ll start hearing a short rattle on startup first but if it gets bad enough it will have a consistent rattle. But most of the time it will also have a timing code in the ecm at that point as well.

The removal tool for the dampener works with the radiator in place if you cut about 1" off the threaded rod and re-cut the end with a cut off disk. Takes about 5 minutes to modify the tool. I believe it is impossible to pull the radiator without the condenser and I was not going down that road. Just did this job this weekend.
@LostCauseRanch
@LostCauseRanch 3 месяца назад
I thought about cutting it down, good to know that worked out, nice job. Yes, condenser comes out with the radiator. It wasn’t a big deal when we had the repair shop as we had an a/c machine and would suck the Freon down. But sold that machine with the shop. So I agree with you on not opening the a/c system if possible. How did the job go for you?

Which end did you cut off? The left hand thread end that threads into the crank or the smaller right hand thread that the puller threads onto? Please let me know. Thanks

I cut off about 7/8” from the smaller right hand thread end. Had to reshape the end similar to how it was so I could still get an adjustable wrench on it.

What a load of crap that's fitted to modern engines it takes hours removing all the plastic rubbish what with hoses sensors etc ,just to change timing chains. Modern engines what have we gained a few more MPG slightly faster acceleration sometimes poorer reliability, very expensive to repair. The good old days simple distributer, coil. Spark plugs and leads, not filled with loads of plastic, sensors everywhere, difficult to reach parts , with some models it's engine out.
