Talk about a pain in the arse! Manufacturers aren't only making it virtually impossible to do these jobs at home, they're also making it more difficult for mechanics like yourself. Reason - money!! Manufacturers don't want parts replacing, they want us to buy a new vehicle, and scrap the old one!
Hi Baz, you did my Vauxhall Astra K timing chain and oil chain, with oil pump, two months ago, it was the one that got over 100k views on RU-vid, the TAXI. Just wanted to say a massive thank you, as you did a fantastic job. Still going strong 8k miles later and now on 174,000. Hopefully it will reach 300,000 miles. Thanks again mate, Matthew
Matthew I’d love to know where baz works I’ve got a fiat Scudo van 2005 needs a dual mass flywheel and clutch not a nice job most mechanics turn a blind eye
Brilliant video by a master technician, but I would never buy one of these awful things How much would this cost? I've never paid more than £800 for a car, let's go back to push rods please
Thanks Baz, this gave me the confidence to do mine. Took 20 hours, plainly i could do it quicker now.....a warning is that the top chain cover has that wind in hex, under a bolt, to help release the cover. When doing it up that single bolt has half the torque of the rest. If you do it up to the torque of the rest of the same size bolts, the bottom corner cracks, bet you cant guess how i know that. Fortunately the crack is below the sealant line... Fingers crossed. Replaced the oil pump and flywheel/ clutch as well (the 110k mile flywheel and clutch were original and barely worn, shouldnt have bought new before i took it apart) Just shy of £1000 in parts
Wow amazing work as always...but this is the perfect nightmare all around...the customer has to pay for all of this and the mechanic actually has to do all of this...I actually got goose bumps just watching the video...I'm mixing myself a Long Island Iced Tea so I don't get nightmares while sleeping...
You knocked it out of the park as usual pal. Great content as always. I've done 3 of these this last year for stretched chains. Can't say I enjoyed doing them. Thanks for the tips on getting the timing covers off. I normally just use a pry bar😂
Have this engine in my insignia and I am dreading the timing chain, have done regular oil changes in the two years I have had it but I still get the dreaded chain rattle every now and again. Half way on the finance at the end of the year so got a big decision to make, you may have a DM from me around December/January time 😊
Hi baz, professional job as alwats mate! You could do with a nice bencharooney for all your removed components. Keep em coming, interesting viewing as ever 👍
Shame about this design flaw from factory with the tensioner. It’s going to write many diesel astras off in the next few years as once they hit about 80-90k when they fail they’re only worth less than 5 grand anyway. Whilst you’re there you’d be daft to not do the dual mass and flywheel adding another £500 in parts at least. Bet when it’s all said and done including actually doing the chain you’re looking at about 2k at least to get it done all for a car that’s worth only about 5. If it was mine I’d struggle to get my head round keeping it and sorting. Anyway I’m only an apprentice myself and think these videos are brilliant because everything is done to the book as I like to do things whilst most at my place are content just doing a job half arsed and back out the door. Keep up the great work 👍
I'm only four mins in and i'm thinking holy crap, what a job. Hi Baz, I found your excellent channel by accident. Now i've got a lot of binge watching to get through.
Great job baz 👍🏻 not many mechs I’ve worked with through years take detail in there job , cleaning that sump is a must , the amount of times I’ve see a sump dropped out and not cleaned properly is nothing short of being a pirate 🏴☠️, good job mate 🍻
That's what I always feel, a video like this would me me go further than my local for work. My local seems ok ( after disasters with some others!) if Wrexham wasn't 100+ miles away I d be knocking on thier door
cant beleive how much work goes into changing some timing chains and belts,i can change my mk4 transit timing belt and water pump in a couple of hours with a ratchet and about 4 sockets
Talk about torture I would never do this job, I'll rather do a timing chain on a Audi q5 than this, HELL no from me. Furthermore good job from him showing us how it's done and staying positive throughout. This video is a Perfect example of stupid engineering why not put it either on the offside to save everyone time OR like the audi's straight at the far back of the engine so you just drop the entire sub frame. Good job mate, your the man to have the balls to take the job and have the patience's 👍😁😂
Why any manufacturer would design an engine with this timing chain arrangement defies any explanation!! And why chains anyway, they're always a ball ache, expensive and are highly likely to cause oil leaks afterwards!! I'll always check any car I buy in future to ensure it's neither chain or gearbox end chain cam drive, if it is I won't go there. It's belts or nothing for me!! Well done on the task though, rather you than me!
Can I ask how it could have been avoided? My 1.6 diesel astra has just done over 144k, nobody could tell me when it needs to be checked, I've had services done but it just went. It's still in the garage after a week, just been told the oil chain has gone and that's extra labour (although it looks in the same place from your video) after quoting 18 hours already. Thanks for the videos, it's really helped me understand how much work is involved 🙂
Do you know WHO makes this engine for vauxhall (or is it their own unit) and is it used in any other makes of car GREAT video - I dont know how you stay so positive with nightmare's like these cars !!👍👍
Great video mate, more helpful than most. My Astra j oil pump has snapped, is there anyway of putting new pump and chain on without taking everything off? Maybe splitting and rejoining pump chain to get it over crank sprocket? Any idea?? 😢
Wow,i can see why techs are running away from this career, 😂, fk that, but your work attitude is great . Im a hgv mechanic , 19 years, seems a little easier lol...
OMG, this is madness. How could engineers design this pain in the arse. Why they put a chain if will need replacement. Better keep the cambelt old school much easy to replace
I have my GMC terrain with this engine all taken apart at the moment and I'm going to do this job just because it's already taken apart but I have a question for the channel owner and anyone here in the comments if they wish to chime in. I'm thinking about relocating where the EGR comes directly off the headers to behind the DPF in an effort to stop the sludge buildup from happening again. I do have a catch can but it's not enough for this engine. Does anyone see a problem with taking the EGR gases from AFTER the DPF rather than stock which is directly off the headers? This way I won't have all this soot fouling up my engine again. I am worries about the EGR gasses having enough pressure to overcome the turbo pressure since I'm assuming the exhaust will have lower pressure after going through the DPF. Thoughts anyone?
Hi Baz, Regarding the chain tensioner on my 2017 Mokka X 1.6 CDTI. The engine rattles occasionally on a cold start for just a second, and then sounds perfect. Literally a split second. If I turn the car off and back on following the cold start, I can't hear the rattle which I assume is because oil pressure has built up. It won’t do it again unless the car has been sitting around for a while. Can the chain tensioner still be replaced or the gasket applied and if so, how can I get a quote from you? Just want to reiterate that it doesn’t rattle when running. Just for a split second on the occasional cold start, so not all the time. Thank you.
@@bazmeredith I have a 2017 w205 mercedes 2.0 ltr and it has a timing chain and there isn't a replacement interval for it,so it doesn't need changing? I'm confused
There is never a service schedule for chains as metal never degrades. It does, however get worn. Especially the plastic guides. Timing chains have been made thinner and thinner, so now, any car from year 2000 onwards, timing chains last approx 150k. Some go as soon as 100k, some might hold on until 200k. It is why I prefer a dry belt which is replaced every 100k miles.
Looking to get the Mrs a diesel sub Kia reportage Renault capture of Nissan qashai or duke I big ask but what is your recommendation I watch your fires and see so many cars that are money out after a few years due to cam belt of chain replacements please can you help as I don't want a £3000 bill after a couple of years many thanks
Great video Baz, lots of detail and tips as you progress. Essential you review other parts whilst engine is stripped, but it is reassuring to the customer that the job is done right. 👍
Fuck me what a big job for a belt. Question what is the quickest belt to do. Question I’m a newbie to your channel is the shop your. Thanks. Swindon boy living in las Vegas 😎😎
And quickest belt to do is a Toyota d4d probably 30 mins if that.. and a belt for everyone to enjoy that's easy is the dv6 psa engine that's fitted to all sorts of platforms
Silly system like bmw diesel uses. To replace the chain the gearbox needs to come off. Unbelievable. All chains should be in the front. They not last the life of the car. Like bmw saying 😅
