"Most engineers don't see the kit as an instrument, but a collection of instruments, which very Linndrum-like." - Simon Phillips. Modern recordings have relegated drummers to being glorified drum machines, with certain engineers swearing you can tell a VST from recorded drums... When both use the exact same techniques.

@ixadvenom
@ixadvenom 3 года назад
I usually get 3 different set of tracks, so I can get the best of low, mid and high... That always gives me a wider sound, mostly in the kick... its like combining 3 different drum kits. so that always give me a massive result. The fills are the best part of that style... All the fill parts always sound so stereo I love that kind of feeling that makes the listener do air drums!!! love that way of mixing them.
@KohleAudioKult
@KohleAudioKult 3 года назад
@@ixadvenom What do you mean with 3 sets of tracks exactly?
@ixadvenom
@ixadvenom 3 года назад
@@KohleAudioKult sorry for my English. I mean I place 4 mics in one way. Other 3 in another way and another 3 in another way to get a wider or a different result. Sometimes at some parts I might want an open snare sound but in other parts maybe the oposite. The drumers think I do it to caputre the whole thing but i usually have 2 mics on the kick and as you did another to capture the room in preference of the kick. In short words... Setting 3 different options so I can use them as I want or just get the 3 together for a massive sound with a nice eq and compresing the shit out of the 3 options to glue it all. Even little drum sets have ended up sounding like a monster kit doing that.

Pretty cool technique. I'll have to give that a try at some point when I get into studio recording. I mostly do live shows, so that's not exactly ideal, but I like to use Kick and overheads for small stages where I don't have a lot of room and even without the big condenser mics I can still get a nice fat drum sound. Even had a guy come up while I was mixing and said drums were great, what mics was I using on the toms, and said it's just overheads and kick, he was taken back. Turns out he was curious because he is an audio engineer as well. Always cool to get compliments from people in this line or work. By the way, I love the Audix D6, it's my go to kick for anything. So easy to sculpt the sound and it picks up some nice bottom end all by itself. My live rig is a bit limited with mics, so the kick gets one and I have to make it work and so far it has not let me down.

@@KohleAudioKult Never had a chance to use either of those or hear them. I used a beta 52 at the venue I worked at and I noticed it lacked a bit of fatness on the bottom end. Even with metal I actually only use 4 or 5 mics. Glyn Jones method and maybe a room mic. The hastle of getting all the mics in phase isn't worth the sound and it doesn't even sound as good imo. Less mics sounds more natural and cooler to me. The only thing that does happen sometimes is the toms get lost alittle in a dense metal mix but it's a worth while trade off still to me. On my next recording to correct this I'm thinking about using triggers just for sidechaining purposes (not for samples) to bring them out if they get to low in the mix. If that works out like I'm hoping it will I might try and use a two mic technique with every drum having triggers and sidechaining them. Something I haven't tried though so it might be a trash method but I like the idea of it. Metal drums on certain mixes now adays sound terrible to me because they're so overly snappy, in your face, and often sample replaced. You add on the performance being quantized to a metronome and the end result just sounds so computerized and almost electronic. That's not how metal should sound imo so any excuse to try and get away from that and still having a clear sounding mix is a good one if you ask me.

@@KohleAudioKult Indeed! I mention it because I know you can hear it on some Led Zep tracks. I thought it was a little wink to that. Anyhow, killer drum tones!

You think you could get pretty good drum sound with really cheap drum mic’s? Of course with a good sounding drum and drummer

It’s better to have a bad drum sound than having a boring one! CHARACTER is fundamental! But...a good or even killer drum sound is always better haha

its all about the room interaction unless you are of course outside pissing in the wild and being chased by wolves where the screams go largely uncompressed until they are around your throat :)

That sounds damn sweet!! That SSL talkback limiter - it is the one Phil Colins used for "In The Air Tonight" drums, right? Another plugin to get this black friday ;-)

@@KohleAudioKult Are you familiar with its specifics? In your opinion, is it just like an 1176er in All-In mode or does it sound different? thx
@KohleAudioKult
@KohleAudioKult 3 года назад
@@morast6330 It sounds way more extreme than an 1176. There's nothing like it. I recently picked up the Korneff after having used the SSL freeware plugin for years. The Korneff has more options and sounds more hifi. The SSL has a very "telephony" sound. Also cool though.
