What a stunning morning. And to have it all to your selves. Never have to be big trout for a great day. When we fish for the wild browns they are half that size for a lot of the time. The only difference is when your on the light fly rod you get the whole experience. May be you will get to feel what its like one day. Your dinner or lunch looked a lot better today. And the pudding looked lush. All in all, this looked like a perfect day. I am happy to support you what ever you fish. But I do like the trout stuff as you could guess. Take care Sean. Shaun UK.

Nice day on the water!! There are actual strains of trout stocked that are called Jumpers. When you hook into them they go nuts!! It can be really fun. My most jumps so far is 7 and the fish was 24” long!! That was exciting, but last year. You do something I used to do when netting the fish. You hold the net in one level and lift the fish in with the rod. You gotta watch, but I know the results that brings,,, I did it for the longest time. It’s something you can generally do with pike and walleye because they have hard mouths and tough skin. Trout have soft mouths, especially the skin. You have to be gentle, especially when landing them and there’s no more stretch in the line! When I fish for trout I have an 8 ft spinning rod that says it’s a medium, but it’s a light medium and my fly rods are 9 or 9.5 ft long. That extra stretch/flex in the rod helps a ton when landing the fish. Keep the fish in the water and let them swim into the net or scoop them with the net IN the water, not out of the air! 😂😂. It took me a whole summer of busy fishing like you get in to adapt. I still catch myself slipping up if I’m spinning reel fishing. As soon as that trout’s weight is on the hook, it’s enough to tear the skin out. You don’t make hard snaps when setting the fish or not at least until you feel it’s hooked well. The hook up rate will improve and the retention at the boat will significantly improve. My buddies harassed me for years about my technique! 😂😂. Justifiably so,,, but,,, heh heh. 😂 I used to reel with my right hand with my fly rod, but as I was stripping the line, it was tying up my right hand to hold it once the fish hit the fly. I would switch hands with my rod and start feeling with my right hand. That is enough time for the fish to get off or move the hook enough that you go to set it and they are gone. I switched to reeling in with my left hand,,, that made SUCH a difference,,,,!! I set the hook and handle the rod right handed (I’m fiercely right handed) and reel with my left. Ho man!! Those few changes brought me up on par with my buddies that have trout fished for decades longer than me!! I use an electric trolling motor or a gas trolling motor (fly fishing or spinning(more baitcasters now) rod fishing). Because of that, 90% of the time the rod is in my hands vs a rod holder. It’s all a timing thing. Harder to do fishing as you do with the kayak. My brother does the same as you and complains he loses more than he catches. Unles you go to a remotely steered electric motor, or peddles/paddles for propulsion, it’s likely to have an affect regardless. Keep on working on it!! Your numbers are steadily increasing!! 😊😊

I'm glad you tried the kastmaster style of spoon they are killer. In the spring you're going to catch ten fish an hour. I find you have to give it a firm tug to set the hook. Even with that, you will find that you will only land about sixty percent of the fish.
