Considering the amount of money PSA makes - our expectations from them as collectors need to be held to a much higher standard. This is not acceptable.

Just out of curiosity, I tried trimming some random cards…. And it seems like basically impossible…..! Atleast for it to look right!! Those corners DONT look cut, because keeping the angles on the corners when cutting is what’s impossible!! I even bought and used one of those office cutting machines, with the big handle and blade!! You can cut even like 1/16th off , but the corners look soooooo funky after even 1/16th!! Those corners honestly don’t look trimmed….

Corners could be re-rounded but doesn't matter if they are since the card size will be off.

With a quick Google search you can find paper corner rounders with curved blades for exactly this type of cutting. Temu has one for 3 bucks but I'm sure it's trash..

My assumption is a CNC paper cutter. Program on center and cut away.

Although i am skeptical as well the issues you stated about not being able to trim it seem to be due to your blade not being sharp enough. I'd assume anyone doing trimming would be using a machine similar to what the pokemon company uses in the factory just on a smaller scale.

The card is smaller.. how the heck do we miss this. Aren't people grading with PSA so that they get a premium from a buyer who doesn't want to worry about this stuff. Defeats the entire purpose of the grading industry. Just another feather in the cap of the folks that say grading is a scam. Time to make a grading company that grades graded card lol!!

I grade cards with PSA to get a premium on cards when I sell. Stuff like this infuriates me. The reason I use PSA is because they are supposed to catch this stuff.

I’ve gotten promo cards that have completely pointed corners so it had more “card” then normal so its kinda scary that those could be trimmable without changing the size

I went on eBay, did a quick look at several PSA pokemon cards, nothing crazy in value, and they all had varying degrees of space. Some filled the edges on all sides, some were shorter, some were narrower.

None should have this much space on the sides or top. Depending on how far down or to the side a card is, there will be, at most, a small gap between the card and inside edge.

I had a few cards send back to me from PSA due to being "Under sized" I was told it's a manufacturing defect. Might be the same case here?

Something to keep in mind, cards might have been like this out of the pack. We don't know how tight the tolerances were back then when those cards were printed, and there could have been cutters with nearly identical, but still different dimensions. This explains why some corners out of the pack look wonky while others are perfectly shaped. There's definitely some inconsistencies coming out of the printing shop. Especially if more than one printing shop was used for different series. What can be done is to open bunch of different packs and look for inconsistencies out of the packs. If inconsistencies exist then it's safe to assume that's the issue here. Because trimming such small amount from a card, especially with foil and different layers like pokemon cards is not an easy feat to accomplish. edit: additionally slabs could be inconsistent, again different molds between different factories. Different temperatures and all that can also be at play here.

This is pure speculation but I have noticed friends on twitter posting cards being loose in slabs with cards they’ve sent in personally. If they were trimming I doubt they’d call attention to it. Do you think there maybe some product swap at some of the the grading companies? Swapping cuts for actual good cards?

I have a factory miscut that is smaller than normal size. It has two square corners from the edge of the paper. I opened it from pack myself so I know it is legit.

That vaporeon doesn't look trimmed at all. Cards get loose in the case all the time.

Just getting back into Pokémon cards after rediscovering and going through a deck I've been holding the last several years. I was ripping blisters of Sun & Moon Burning Shadows at the time. I forgot that I had a Wicke foil in there, so now I'm looking at sending it off to PSA. Gotta talk more about this trimming business on SCR live tomorrow night, especially since PWCC has been in trouble with stuff like this before covid. Not to mention PSA has also made a lotta mistakes themselves in the past passing off counterfeit as authentic...ridiculous.

now that Fanatics has a near monopoly on most sports cards as well as PWCC and has its fingers in everything, more errors are being caught. You don't need to know sports to know that grading fake autographed Michael Jordan rookie cards recently is a WAY big woopsie. I think the errors existed before Fanatics spread its tentacles. I wouldn't grade with PSA until the graders are better educated and higher skilled and with Fanatics influencing every angle of the card market I think that is what we'll see in the future, better trained graders.

Damn, that Vaporeon, I have use of my eyes and wouldn't be buying a 10 that off center anyway. 😂 Problem is Mike, it is feasible that card size could vary slightly as I believe the guillotine process was somewhat manual at the print facility or facilities. It would be cool to do a video, measuring cards throughout the years. Something I may look at myself unless someone has already 😂

@2:53 "Cards are consistent" - Are they? I can't speak for vintage but I definitely got some random larger cut cards from a Lost Origin booster pack. I thought I was going crazy but placed in a stack they're noticeably larger.

I've put over 25,000 cards in perfect fits. The height and width of the cards is very consistent.

@@RattlePokemon Sure, and I've opened thousands of dollars in the last year and had no miscuts, but they happen- right? Pokemons track record for quality isn't perfect, we can admit that much. Checking my bulk I've got more than a few that stick out width-wise. It's minor but enough that'd I'd imagine they be banned as marked in a tournament.

Wow, that light left and still a 10,PSA is suburb ✊️/ That's a hard consumption because when one really comes to an understanding of how hard or hardware one would need to Precisely cut or trim the edges on any sorts of trading cards comes by really really difficult Jungle in of all sets the cutting is beyond repair 😅I would know from past experience soooo yeah I highly doubt that scheme come on now.

PSA even states that they now use an AI centering tool that scans every card submitted and gives it a centering grade. Should be easy to set this up to detect cut cards...

@@RattlePokemon Every PSA slab has a gap. Hypothetically, let’s just say that the gap you pointed out happens to be very slightly bigger than the average gap. Who is to say that’s not because PSAs slabs aren’t manufactured down to the exact micrometer? I mean the gap we are talking about here is less than a millimeter. How would cutting off less than a millimeter of a card possibly be some type of massive scam to get a higher grade? Do they just happen to have cards that have issues only in the outer micrometer that they just chop off? Seems kind of ridiculous to me to assume that it’s some type of fraud ring where people are cutting off less than a millimeter of a card to score a PSA 10 somehow

A card being OC doesn't have less card, it's just off center. It's the same total width and height.

Some pokemon will have wiggle room. You wouldn't know because you don't have slabs. Lol. My Japanese slabs the card are thinner and will wiggle inside slab.
