Come with me to… MORIEN CLIFFS MUNICIPAL PARK
In 2023 I decided it would be fun to try to visit all the beaches on Cape Breton Island. I read somewhere there are around 80. I don’t know how long this will take - I’m just gonna go one by one - today me and you we’re going to MORIEN CLIFFS MUNICIPAL PARK. Ok, lets go! It is a 30 minute drive from Sydney or a 15 minute drive from Glace Bay. When you arrive in town you’re greeted by this welcome sign. You’re close when you see this garage. There are no signs for the beach but you know you’ve arrived when you see the colorful Adirondack chairs, the buoys, and the carved wooden fisherman. I bet this fisherman has a name - if you know, leave it in the comments. This land is owned by CBRM. There are picnic tables, benches, and garbage can, historic markers. There are no public washrooms or change houses here. And you should know cell phone reception is hit or miss. I learned each colorful chair is in memory of a villager who has passed away. What we’re looking at here is Morien Bay. The fishing wharf is behind the breakwater. From mid-May to mid-July you can see the lobster boats come and go. I arrived in the morning and the sun sparkling on the water was a beautiful sight.
These stairs here were installed in 2018. Twenty-two steps down to the terrace. I love the decorations. Another 40 steps down to the sand. If you’re a kid - you’re in luck! I like that they have a bin for bottles and cans. Whoever did the lettering on these bins did a great job! I was here in the morning around 9:30am and it was soon going to be low tide. I had the place to myself. Except for this bird. The beach is about a ¼ kilometer long. And faces South East and I’m sure the sunrises here are spectacular. Peak summer time you can expect to find locals here enjoying the beach. I think the beach is most crowded during the polar bear dip! Even Mike Kelloway the MP for Cape Breton Canso participated and I also see the CBRM mayor Amanda MacDougall and MLA for Cape Breton East Brian Comer. Sand - you can see who was here before me… some people, some dogs and lots of birds. I didn’t see anyone else but if you came last year during the summer festival you would have seen a mermaid!
