So i have been sorting out RL stuff for quite some time, and FINALLY got some time again to make another video. The karasu from morihei has been sitting unused for a few months and just couldnt wait any more.

Nice to see you again. The 9k will probably improve when you lap off some of the top layer. It is not a soaking stone. However, a short soak improves the feedback. These stones leave a unique scratch pattern at the apex. Under magnification it looks like shark teeth. So even after a 9k stone you will have some bite in the edge. I think you need to use the knife in practice to be able to judge the performance of the stone. Compared to a naniwa pro i think this one is closer to a 5k. I have the Morihei 1, 4, 9 and 12k. The 12k feels almost like using a Shiro suita. I use mine mostly for straight razor honing. For knife honing the 4k is my favorite in this series. Unless you are polishing the bevel plane for contrast, i would not use slurry with them. It just damage the apex (just a tip).

I usually lap the my other morihei stones, so i will give it a go, and have a look under the microscope in my next session. AS for the 4k, its in my shelf. And i will be testing it out in a few days i think. :)

Exactly the experience i've had with my 9k. Laping made it even better, i tend to soak it couple of mins as well. I really love the micro tooth, makes it a great last stone for kitchen knives imo.

When you say to don't make a slurry, you mean that for the 4k or the 9k?
@jpo31
@jpo31 6 месяцев назад
@@sacoto98 Yes. I have not found any benefits of using slurry on synthetic stones, unless you are using it for polishing the bevel. Some stones can however benefits from a light slurry generated with a natural stone on the synthetic stone. Most of my sharpening is done with straight razors. For knifes it can be a little different, because what makes a straight razor edge good might not apply to a knife.

Interesting to see how you like it. I like Karasu. Hard stone but not too hard, good feedback and it leaves a nice finish. Not the most powerfull of ny 8-10k stones but definately on the better ones in my collection. I think one cannot go wrong with that one in 8-10k range. It works fine as splash&go. I tend to jump on it from 3-4k stone after 1k. I like to open it up a bit with 400 atoma to get a bit of slurry like with most stones that are not muddy.

@@lofotenknifeworks2278 supposed to be one of the best 4k stones out there. I have a imanishi 4k but it's not the best just like my arato 220 which i will replace with a sueshiro 180 debado

nice stone, lovely pattern. What about the morihei 4k? Can you do some wide-bevel polishing?

I’d love to try a Morihei stone but unfortunately they are a bit too pricey for me 😢 what grit diamond plate do you use?
@lofotenknifeworks2278
@lofotenknifeworks2278 Год назад
They are a bit pricey yes. But a dream to work on. But you do get good stones for cheaper as well, if its any comfort 😀 the diamond plate is an atoma 140 😁

Well the shapton pro's are pretty hard. So that could be worth looking into. I prefer the 320, but they do come in 120 as well 😀
