LEEDS PARISH #30: MORLEY
This is a town - and the largest civil parish in the whole of Leeds. It’s so big that it used to command its own municipal borough until being incorporated into Leeds in 1972
Industrially it was famous for its textile industry, most notably the cloth worn by both sides in the American Civil War.
The boundaries also cover the village of Churwell which sits on the main road North towards Leeds
It’s famed for its seven hills, just like those in Rome

Great video.Well done.I am a Morley lass born and bred here.Morley was such a lovely little town when it was a borough years ago,but changed for the worse when Leeds city council took it over.😢

This is fantastic. Brilliant job. I grew up in this town. That's my grand's old house, last on the right by Lewisham Park. My great grandparents Edward & Lena Pritchard ran The Commercial pub for decades. Great to see it thriving. And the first name on the Great War Memorial is Charles Adams, my Great Great Grandfather. Had to return here.

A lot has changed since I left in 79, but much is still recognisable. My mum and dad went to school with Beryl Burton, and many years later in the 80's I raced against her a number of times, and lost. In 1970 I was a flag bearer on the St Georges day parade, it started at St Mary in the Woods finishing at St Pauls. My gran used to preach at the Church of the Nazarene (the old chapel, not the new one you saw) along with other non conformist chapels in the area. Dad's best friend John Dunning was steward at the Fountain Street WMC, in the 1980s reached a top 16 world ranking as a snooker pro. Maybe it's time to make a return trip.

lovely video .. at the bottom of Troy rd it is called coffin corner .. people think it is because of the shape of the stone corner, but it is not .. it is called that because it is where the horse-drawn hearses stopped to give the horses a chance to gain purchase on the cobble before they went up to St Mary's in the wood church.

It seems to have changed a lot but I remember Morley low railway station. I left the area in 1979

I’m very impressed at how comprehensive this episode is. You’ve shown me parts of Morley that I didn’t know. Over 40 years ago the landlord of The Commercial (top oil, Churrel ill- top hole Churwell Hill) was John Charles the footballer. I used to do the VAT paperwork for him.

I still look back at this one and wonder how the heck I managed to cover so much, especially seeing as I drove here straight from Drighlington, which was a marathon in itself haha As for John Charles, yes you're right! I think I read that somewhere whilst I was writing the script. Small world as they say!

Fantastic video of my home town, filled with information that I didn't even know. BTW Churwell, is pronounced Churrel, don't ask me why, lol. I no longer live in Morley since my wife had a stroke of which she nearly died, We now live in Pudsey, another town within the Leeds borders, where Pudsey Bear originated from, can we see a video from there?

Yep, sure was, another of Melanie Wilks' This comes from a website I found about it: "The statue shows a miner holding a hammer standing against his head. "Whilst working on the sculptures at the quarry Melanie met her now husband Neil and ex miner and the lamp in the statue was actually modelled on his own lamp."

Ernie Wiseman performed at the 'New Pavilion', the statue of him is supposed to be him looking at the venue and tipping his hat.....Eric Morecombe statue is far superior though lol
