Join us now on Mormon Stories Podcast as we interview Jared, Gwen, and Madison Lusk. This episode is a continuation in our series highlight former Mormon bishops and their families who have experienced a faith crisis. Jared is set to be excommunicated on June 30th, 2019 for apostasy (details below).
The Lusks live in Farmington, New Mexico. Jared and Gwen were raised as devout Mormons, married in the Jordan River temple, had 6 children, and established a successful dental practice in Farmington, NM. Jared and Gwen devoted their lives to the Mormon church for 45+ years, including Jared serving as bishop from 2008-2013, and Gwen serving in multiple callings.
Jared’s faith crisis was triggered in 2015 when he began reading the LDS Gospel Topics Essays. Jared and Gwen experienced a mixed faith marriage for a few years. In April of 2018, while being released from a stake calling, Jared shared with his stake president and one of the counselors details regarding his faith crisis. The stake president immediately took Jared’s temple recommend away, and then released Gwen from her calling and took her temple recommend away a few weeks later. Madison (18) resigned from the church in April, 2019.
After Jared began expressing public support for Sam Young and the Protect LDS Children movement, along with expressing public feelings about the church’s truth claims, Jared was summoned to a disciplinary council. Jared faces excommunication on June 30th, 2019 at 6pm at the Farmington, NM stake center.
This is their story.

I just submitted my resignation this morning. Opposite of Madison's story; my dad became bishop of a new ward (to where he had to organize the whole ward) right as I was becoming a teenager and entering young women's. When my parents sat us down to tell us he'd be called, they specifically told us we had to keep our nose's clean and be the best examples are it would reflect negatively on him in the community. Lot of unnecessary pressure for a 12 year old. Any time we made the smallest mistakes, we were "reminded" of how those mistakes would make our dad look as bishop.

I am sorry Tiffany. Your parents made a mistake in that because they are imperfect mortals. That doesn't however make the doctrine false. It just means that because of being told that at a young age it has given you distaste for the religion. As you go down through the years you may want to keep an open mind as the doctrine is true and an amazing sacrifice to give for the amazing reward.

You are right John the long serving Mormons are grieving there loss of the church. It takes a lot of courage to walk away and often it’s better to stay and just be aware of the truth and don’t talk about it God bless you my friends

It’s kind of interesting to realize when John’s not listening to his guests. The poor man said he fell off the roof of a 40 foot building, broke his back, and was near death for days, but John didn’t really get it. Makes me wish he could have an assistant help him during interviews so he can be more present and empathetic. Think he has to juggle too much input and tech stuff. But Hey, he never missed a beat about their sex lives! LOLOL. Great interview. Nice, happy, “normal” family.

People can find something they don't like in any situation in life. My testimony is firmly rooted in pure doctrine so that when the imperfections of mortal mankind come about I will not waver. There is so much incredible good with the church, tenfold more then the bad, I choose to focus on that.

To many,many women, one in 5 to be exact,who had their innocence taken from them as children, as your and once my so called prophet Joseph Smith took from two 14 year old girls that we know of, not women, your comments are offensive, incredibly offensive. True followers of Jesus Christ do NOT prey upon and HURT children. You should know what Jesus said about the likes of Joseph Smith and others who take the innocence of children....'It is better for them to have a millstone tied around there neck and tossed into the deepest ocean.' When l read about JS and what he did and the deceipt and lies, l immediately left the Church. Now l feel like a complete fool for believing all those lies.l am actually embarrassed. I was a convert to the Church , baptised Australia 1971.Resigned my membership June 2019.

Fine, as long as you don't care about the truth. Atheists do good things, but it's not the truth. Jehovah's witnesses do good things, but it's still a cult like mormonism. Search for the truth, which you won't find coming from Joe Smith's mouth.

I like what you said Catherine. The church is lead by Jesus Christ, but ran by humans, who are all fallible. Every organization, even God’s church on earth, has errors when humans get involved as we all make mistakes. I find it funny when people find an error, and we’d all admit that we all mess up, that it somehow reflects negatively on the perfection of God’s doctrine?? I don’t get that. I have to allow all my fellow Latter-Day Saints (even prophets- they’re not perfect at all) and Christians across all faiths the grace of accepting their human mistakes. Oh how grateful I am for the atonement of Christ our savior and redeemer, and our ability to return to the Father because of what He did, despite my errors and everyone else’s.

I was going to come Mr. when I heard his mother died when he was 3.5 and then didn’t... but then I hear that he ended up with ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) after falling 40 feet and I just had to comment!! My mother also died when I was young. I was 4. And she actually died as a result of developing ARDS from issues after having her gallbladder removed (I’ve heard she had sepsis from the infection caused by how severe her gallbladder issue was and I’ve also heard that she woke up during surgery which would have caused some form of shock) since ARDS can be caused by some kind of trauma (like falling off a roof), infection, shock, really any number of causes. It really is amazing that he didn’t die. Back in the 80s medical treatment for ARDS was not what it is today and they just really didn’t know what they do now about how to treat it. My mother was put on a ventilator and delivered a set tidal volume to inflate her lungs. As a child I was told that she died because the ventilator that was supposed to help her breathe actually made her lungs worse. That instead of her lungs being like a sponge they became hardened. They now know that this is a result of the positive air pressure being pushed following the path of least resistance and overinflating the healthy lung tissue causing injury. I haven’t heard of anyone having ARDS, back before they knew more about how to treat it, surviving. 💜

Jared, you said that Church's focus was Eternal families and the plan of Salvation, but not Christ...I am at lost for words. Because without Jesus Christ, those things would be impossible! What about the weekly sacramental bread and water, in remembrance of his body and blood? Every prayer we say ends in the name of Jesus Christ! You see how what you said just doesn't add up to reality and truth???

@@fayelewis5476 been awhile aye? I was hoping to hear from you again :) So why you assume that we deny Christ, just because we believe he is the firstborn creation of the Father, as the Bible says? Also, Eternity by definition says time has no bearing on it. Therefore, by definition, that means God has always been God for all Eternity, Jesus as well.
@goingtothetop55
@goingtothetop55 4 года назад
@@fayelewis5476 I agree with almost everything you said. Except your assumptions that Eternity and God's nature can be understood or measured by man? It simply cannot! That's why I mentioned previously that the very definition of Eternity states that it's an existence where time(as we humans measure) has no weight or influence whatsoever, thus what you're saying isn't compatible with Eternity.
@goingtothetop55
@goingtothetop55 4 года назад
@@fayelewis5476 Again I agree with most of what you're saying, but even your definition of Eternity is contradictory to your beliefs. And to respond to your statement about accepting Jospeh Smith as a Prophet, I've heard many Christians say that you must accept Paul as your Apostle and his Gospel(Paul called it his Gospel), and follow his Gospel, or you can't be saved in the Church age of today. Yet I don't see anything wrong with either of those, because at the end of the day, only the Blood of Jesus Christ can save us.
@goingtothetop55
@goingtothetop55 4 года назад
@@fayelewis5476 I am going by what a lot of Christian and Born Again preachers are teaching on their youtbe Channels in regards to Paul. And I am confused? Who said you have to bear testimony on the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith and the Church in order to get to Heaven? That's 100% false, and is not the case at all. I would like to add that many Christians online are saying that the Gospel Paul preached, "The Gospel of Grace," is in fact different from the Gospel the Apostles and Jesus preached(Baptism, repenting of your sins, etc.) They say that we must rightly divide the Word of God into dispensations, and the Gospel was different in each. Look up Pastor Robert Breaker, he has a huge following on RU-vid, and he has many videos about Paul and his Gospel, how truly saved Christians follow the Gospel Paul preached, and not what the original Apostles taught. Rightly dividing the Word of Truth, Lordship Salvation(he says this is damnable), etc. He and many others also preach that once you're saved, you're always saved, and you cannot be unsaved. Even if you decided to commit murder, have homosexual relations, become a Mormon, become a Muslim, commit adultery, pretty much anything possible, doesn't matter, you're still saved. You can't make this stuff up! I find it to be a Heresey of the highest order and a mockery of Jesus, but it's what's being preached. My Church doesn't teach this at all. Would love to hear your take on this matter, it's pretty significant.
@goingtothetop55
@goingtothetop55 4 года назад
@@fayelewis5476 I agree with you, there is only one Gospel and both Jesus and Paul taught it. I was stating what many devout Christians are preaching and the confusion that's out there on what the Bible really says(within Christianity). I've been following Micah and his family and their ministry for 10 years now. Sadly, I believe they were all decieved by the devil, and I pray they may find their way back to the truth.

Funny thing he said their focus was on Eternal Families and the Book of Mormon but not on Christ. The entire Book of Mormon is focused on Christ and how to come to him through faith in Him and repentance. There is no way to read the Book of Mormon sincerely and not realize that every author's intent is to bring the reader to Christ.

People get confused with what is taught in the doctrine. Many things begin to be taken out of context or are just misunderstood. Major tool of the adversary. I am not saying that everything is perfect. Perfection is impossible in a fallen world so these discrepancies are bound to creep in. But the pure doctrine is correct and worth every single sacrifice.
