Mormonism vs. Christianity: Do You Know the Difference? (Ep. 124)

Do you know who are you following on social media? There's a growing trend of Mormon influencers on many platforms - especially Instagram. Their family values, conservative dress and love for family is inspiring. Many people might actually think the Church of Latter Day Saints is a different denomination of Christianity because they believe in Jesus. But sometimes we see people that seem to have similar values and beliefs only to find out their backgrounds are actually much different than what meets the eye.
Today, J. Warner Wallace joins me to discuss his experience with the Mormonism and, as he says, how he “became a Christian at the same time he became not-Mormon.” At a time when so many are looking for fulfillment in their lives, it’s easy to be deceived into believing what’s false. J. Warner Wallace encourages us to look at everything from an investigative viewpoint to discover what’s actually true, and to know the distinct differences between Christianity and Mormonism.

Thank you for this! I trust the Gospel authors myself. Grew up with Mormons, their beliefs are so different than mine as a Christian. And they are different, 60 years have passed. The devil doesn’t care what we believe, as long as we do NOT believe the Bible. Frightening!

I did not realize you had the same experience..... I became a follower of Christ as I was investigating the claims of the visiting missionaries. I was someone who went digging also.... I did not find that the book of Mormon was convincing but that was not enough for me..... but the fact that blacks were not allowed to be part of the priesthood (of all faithful men) and be in the temple until 1978 caused me HUGE distress. If that was false... then the prophet was false... and then everything falls apart. The missionaries talked to their bishop and then came back and said pray to know. I did and met the true God and immediately gave my life to Jesus. :)

Did it ever occur to you that there may have been a plausible reason why blacks were not allowed the priesthood until 1978? Could it have been wisdom in God that allowing them the priesthood in times of racial unrest might have created a schism in the church? This did not happen on a whim; it was something that the church leaders had prayed over at length. When the revelation came, it was time. Also of note, at no time were blacks ever deprived of the gospel, and had access to all things pertaining to exaltation in the Celestial Kingdom.

They may live their church culture pretty strictly. But they aren’t actually about God. They depend on their leaders to tell them all the physical things to do to be righteous. And this is always changing. Such as in 1973 I made different covenants in the temple than they do now. Most of these things have nothing really to do with the real Jesus, except they put his name in here and there. Such as, baptism is when you become a member of that church. The temple is about your own advancement. And on and on.

Just to let you know we do believe we are saved, only through the Grace of Jesus. We also believe we are changed by him. That change in us is how we become like him. As we keep his commandments we become more like him until he makes us Joint Heirs with him. A concept you do not understand. This is his blessing upon us to bring us into the presence of the Father.

"It is it is not for us to judge who, in the deepest sense, is or is not close to the spirit of Christ. We do not see into men's hearts. We cannot judge, and are indeed forbidden to judge. It would be wicked arrogance for us to say that any man is, or is not, a Christian in this refined sense... When a man who accepts the Christian doctrine lives unworthy of it, it is much clearer to say he is a bad Christian than to say he is not a christian." - C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, pp. 10-11.

I want to talk a little about Grace by pointimg you to the Bible where Grace and work is clearly taught to be a requirement for Salvation (we say exaltation because Salvation is a free gift since Jesus died for all) First consider the parable in which Jesus Christ compared thr kingdom of heaven to talents Mathew 25:14-24 But the most interesting scripture for me on the importance of good works as a requirement for Salvation along side grace (of course, we are saved by grace after all we can do, or no matter what we do.) is Philippians 2:12-13 but then you'll give a lot of explanation to refute this, and then you look at the detialed explanation given by Paul in thr next chapter of his own efforts when he said "not as though I have already attained" (3:12) "reaching forth unto those things which are before," (3:13) "I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (3:14). Of course, "Faith without work is dead." I hate it when people spew lies against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. The greatest confirmation of truth is to experience it yourself, I have experienced it and I know it to be true.

The reason every term you use or the larger Christiandom uses is different from what it means for Latter Day Saints, like Salvation, Jesus, Faith, Grace, or even Church is becaue your own explanation has been watered down in the Ecumenical councils and the demonic creeds that followed. We should be explaning these terms with the scriptures but you think the Bible supports your explanation, but no, it does not.

Another Lie Spotted. We are not Polytheists and don't believe there is more than one God in the sense of God the Father, but there are three God's in the sense of God the father, his Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, and there are gods in the sense of there are many gods in this world. Psalm 82:6 I said, “You are gods, ... And all of you are sons of the Most High But come to think if it, the temptation was that if Adam and Eve partook of the forbidden fruit, they'd be as God knowing good from Evil (Genesis 3:5), so did they partake of thr fruit? YES. Did they become like God? Yes (Genesis 3:22) I will continue to refute every lie you tell here.

You don’t know the Bible then. Its truth is given when you believe and have the Holy Spirit, which opens your eyes to the truth within the Bible. Matthew 7:14 tells us that “narrow is the gate and difficult is the way that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Paul also told us in Galatians 1:9 “As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.” Pretty strong words. I find it interesting that a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints isn't a part of this conversation. If I want to "be ready to give an answer," I might engage with a member of that church. I believe this whole conversation would be a lot more unbiased, genuine, and fair if the "person" you were speaking about was present. It's not like they wouldn't be willing, as you say. For example, if I want to understand a Republican, I don't think a Democrat would be the best resource. If I wanted to understand a woman, I wouldn't interview a man. This guest isn't a member of their church. He claims all sorts of things that require us to trust his words and discount an entire religion. I believe going to the source is wisest. It's fine for you both as family friends having a chat, but your intent is to dissuade other Christians from listening to members of the Mormon faith and to arm them with responses to potential conversations. Wouldn't it be more affirming to seek more knowledge and conviction of one's own faith by study and prayer rather than to speculate and cast judgement on others' beliefs? If someone truly is kindly curious about another's beliefs, why not ask them, not their foe? Are we seeking truth or simply trying to feel comfortable about what we ourselves believe? Do your Jesus and apostles teach that baptism is necessary for salvation in the Kingdom of God? 13 New Testament verses that either directly state that baptism is essential for salvation or indirectly point that it is. Mine do. Do your Jesus and apostles teach that you need to obey commandments if you want to be with them? I find 12 New Testament verses (there may be more), that indicate that you do. Mine teach these things. If your church doesn't even teach proper doctrine, and I know you don't, who are you to tell someone they are not Christian. Fortunately for you, by the grace of Heavenly Father and His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who was sacrificed and resurrected so that ALL will be resurrected (the just and unjust), you will have some degree of glory in the life to come. What do you think we are doing here? If the gospel was just believe and be saved, the Bible could be condensed to a 2-page pamphlet. Ironically, you just made the exact prayer the hypocrites made in the book of Mormon, word by word. Read it here: Alma 31:15-19 15 Holy, holy God; we believe that thou art God, and we believe that thou art holy, and that thou wast a spirit, and that thou art a spirit, and that thou wilt be a spirit forever. 16 Holy God, we believe that thou hast separated us from our brethren; and we do not believe in the tradition of our brethren, which was handed down to them by the childishness of their fathers; but we believe that thou hast elected us to be thy holy children; and also thou hast made it known unto us that there shall be no Christ. 17 But thou art the same yesterday, today, and forever; and thou hast elected us that we shall be saved, whilst all around us are elected to be cast by thy wrath down to hell; for the which holiness, O God, we thank thee; and we also thank thee that thou hast elected us, that we may not be led away after the foolish traditions of our brethren, which doth bind them down to a belief of Christ, which doth lead their hearts to wander far from thee, our God. 18 And again we thank thee, O God, that we are a chosen and a holy people. Amen. 19 Now it came to pass that after Alma and his brethren and his sons had heard these prayers, they were astonished beyond all measure.

We don't believe in the trinity because God does not believe in the trinity. He basically shattered the comcept of trinity even before it was concieved in the counsel at Nicea in Jesus's baptism when a voice spoke from heaven (God the Father), and Jesus was in the water (God the son), and the Holy Ghost ( in the form of a dove). Three distinct personalities, we believe in the "God head" and not Trinity which says God the Father is Jesus, and Jesus is the holyghost, and thr holy ghost is .... The power of the Holy Ghost has told millions of people that their own Religion is the ONE and ONLY True One. Your experience is NOT the only witness of a particular organization being the ONE and ONLY True One. When did you last watch the video "Follow the Spirit" ?

@@raysalmon6566 Yes, the Holy Ghost is needed to gain spiritual insight. Read first Corinthians chapter 2. Also, I’ve seen that the Holy Ghost is real in how it has helped me in school and when I was a missionary. I would get a prompting to go to a persons house and I found out that they were praying for us to be there. Also in college I was taking a differential equations class. The Holy Ghost helped me through a difficult test. Through the power of the Holy Ghost you can know the truth of all things.

as an ex Mormon I think it is important to at least give more accurate truth. Joseph Smith's relationships were not all sexual. While all were not good, Some were just about collecting wives. This conversation would have been better with an actual Mormon or someone who had lived Mormonism for a long time. .Mormons still believe in Grace for salvation. Their interpretation of what heaven looks like is where the works come in. Works about getting to the highest level. also comparisons are not a Mormon thing. Christians judge and compare all the time. For my 40 plus years as a Mormon we always claimed to be Christians. I dont like this guy saying mormons are unsaved. He cannot make that claim. He isn't Jesus. There is a lot wrong with Mormonism but this guy really doesn't know. He is not the expert he is making himself out to be. I Find this podcast disappointing.

He knows enough, and definitely way more than the average person. Who cares if only “some” of Joseph Smiths relationships were sexual. It’s irrelevant. The fact that any besides one wife are, and the fact he’s “collecting” wives is unChristian & problematic. God condemns polygamy in the Old Testament, and Jesus condemns it in the New Testament

@@jarueb Oh I am not defending Polygamy. What I am saying is this discussion would be better with someone who lived mormonism. Who actually understands it and gets the history right. If we are going to talk about something it should be correct.

Q18 Who says we don't believe in a plurality of Gods? You believe in a plurality of Gods too, you just use some post biblical non sensical mumbo jumbo trinitarian explanation to cover up the fact you believe the same but can claim it means one God.

Christianity isn't really Christianity. It's opinion, gossip, rumor, chaos, and babel with a bibleish tint. This is due to it being tens of thousands of differing denominations with no two exactly alike in interpretation of the bible. So it is nearer to a marketplace of counterfeiters than the authentic advancement of Gods work. It has no head or shepherd because they each have their own God, Christ, and gospel, one set for each denomination. So it is tens of thousands of different gospels, saviors and Gods. It is Hydra. Sorry but that is just a self evident truth. The LDS Church is Gods restored true Church. So is it any wonder that it isn't like the hoax parading as Christianity.

I used to think the same: ask a Mormon if you have a question but having been a missionary I know Mormons believe based on on feeling alone. They will not entertain questions about Joseph Smith. Dude was a nut job but no Mormon will hear it or look at it.

@@KnuttyEntertainment Are you for real???? a member has _ALL_ the motivation to misrepresent their own history! The church gives members a long leash to believe what they wish, really the only things a Latter-day Saint must believe are the things laid out in the articles of faith and temple recommend questions, but even disagreeing with some of those won’t automatically get you excommunicated for heresy.
