When my grandfather died her sons flipped a coin to see who got stuck with grandmother. My father lost. So he brought her to Sedona and built her a Mother-in-Law house in the back yard with a ramp from her house to the main one with daily visits both ways. Later my father's wife died and grandma had to move in with Barney, the mormon son. The entire family tried to convert her and when she refused, they treated her like shit! Her son charged her $650 a month for a bedroom (in the 1980s) plus they charged her for food and laundry. I was in Phoenix and decided to take my kids to meet their grandmother only to find that the entire mormon family had taken off to some church function in another state, leaving her alone. When I arrived, I found she had NO cooked food, just cans she could not open, and her clothes and sheets were dirty (I am being kind as she was sleeping in the same diaper for 3 days. I assigned my kids to play with their great grandmother while my wife washed her clothes and sheets. I found the stove broken and only canned foods on hand with no can opener. I fixed the stove, had my wife make a weeks supply of heat-up meals I managed to open every can she needed, and we labeled each pyrex meal with a magic-marker so she could read the 'how long at what temp' and remained until she fell asleep. A few days later I called my uncle and reamed him out!!!!!! She was his mother and deserved better. His reply was that by rejecting baptism in the church, she had aligned herself with satan and deserved no love or consideration. THAT is the church I grew up with.

@quacks2much Of course you will. The Church does not have a monopoly on spirituality and Jesus. I listen to psychics sometimes and near death experiences. We travel already with a " soul group" so you will always be with your soul group. You came to earth together. The Church does not have a monopoly " family forever" but only asking you to give your power away so the Church can give it back with limits and conditions. You can find God without it. You can keep your power for yourself and your be own compass.

Watching the OG Eve podcast was devastating and fabulous. It was like watching myself sagging with the various "truths" of the Mormonism I grew up with that led to me leaving the church, but I had never seen anyone truly listen and absorb and realize hard truths right before my eyes. Eve was very brave. And so was Carah. Brave enough to show us one of the scariest moments in a religious person's life. But it was also a birth, yet birth is no easy thing. Thank you.

I miss that community. Thats what took me longer to leave because I didn’t want to loose everybody. My family sucks and it felt like me and my daughter finally had family with the Mormon church. What helped me was a video that I saw that mentioned if you don’t leave, then your children will have to go through this whole leaving process because it is a lie and they are going to know. I would rather struggle with this than my daughter in the future. I’m glad that I left.

I want something about what the speaker is talking about. She says that there is this great love and friendship, fellowship in the ward family. She said she had this for thirty-three years. She mentioned that losing this genuine love is hard. I’ve been a member for 40 years and have NEVER had fellowship and love save for three friends. I am not white, and that is the reason. This church was built by white people for white people. I was forced into the fringes despite trying desperately for fit in and be accepted. Eventually I accepted my place, grew deeply miserable, then realized that the problem wasn’t me, it’s the church itself, from the top down. So for me, leaving was easy; I had nothing to walk away from. I still cherish my core faith tenets, and we worship at home our way, a way that is meaningful and uplifting. I wish I would have left decades ago, but I’m happy now.
@unicorntamer2207

When I left, no one came looking for me. No "leaving the 99 sheep to go looking for the 1 lost sheep." I was in singles ward at the time. I had 2 visits from my home teachers, 1 visit from my visiting teachers, and that was it. In some ways, it kinda hurt. It showed me how fake the friendships I had were. But I'm kinda glad for it. Less BS to sort through.

One of the hardest things about leaving the church is about finding purpose. You're given a purpose for life by the church that you work towards your whole life. Having that taken away is difficult. You have to rediscover a purpose whether a different overarching purpose for the world and life. Or a personal chosen purpose for your life and what you want to do. Listening to NDEs personally helped me with reconstructing an overarching purpose. I also found a personal purpose after a long time and it's really empowering to discover what you want to do with your life but it can take a while to discover.

In the decades after leaving the Catholic Church, I’ve formed many friendships with people of so many different backgrounds. I have also maintained cordial relationships with practicing Catholics. (Catholicism is weird in its own way, but in the USA at least, it isn’t nearly as demanding as Mormonism). But there is nothing quite so special as my friendships and discussions with my fellow ex-Catholics. We just “get” each other. Especially if they went to Catholic school. And this special understanding is something I sense in your discussions with Eve, John and Alyssa. Good luck to all of you.

This reminded me of the sister missionaries who taught me the discussions when I was 9 years old... I was a child of record, and was even baptized at the age of 8, but my records were lost so I was rebaptized as a convert. It makes me sad now, knowing that I was indoctrinated and brainwashed at such a young age. I was never allowed to serve a mission for the church, even though I wanted to, so I ended up spending about 15 years of my life writing hundreds of letters to well over 200 missionaries (men and women) serving all over the world. I know for a fact that more than a few of them were shared with mission companions - one companion from Argentina (who served in Uruguay) even started writing me regularly and later proposed to me. I didn't end up converting anyone with my letters, but I tried to offer support and comfort to those serving (well, maybe not those first few years as I was a deeply traumatized and confused teenager :)). I've thought about continuing to write missionaries, but I'm not sure how well that would go over now that I no longer believe in the Church or in God...

For anyone who is still a member, if your gospel experience stops at "beliefs" seek the Lord until you KNOW. "[Our] first and foremost duty [is] to seek the Lord until we open the path of communication from God to our own soul.” Brigham Young

Things might be different now, but I went to Greece a long time ago, and the people were very friendly. The food was delicious. Have fun!

I’ve never consider the LDS was a cult, but as I sit here thinking I have Mormon friend that we have other things in common and friends that don’t share the same political views either so I started wondering why can’t you be friends with friends in different churches or in your old church? And there it was there are restrictions within the church that require you Mormon friends to put effort into you rejoining! The strongest driver in most converts is indeed crisis, not all but enough to make fanatics.

The reason it's a cult is because it checks off almost every box in the BITE Model for High Demand Religions. And because of what it took to get out. A decade of mental gymnastics and studying to make sure I wasn't leaving the one true church. I'm Crystal clear on it now, but yeah, it's really easy to tell it's a cult after you get out. 👍🏼

If i had the money to go to Greece with you ladies i would! I'm a never mo but i actually covered the back rent for my niece's father so she would have a roof over her head(i would take her in any time but obviously don't want to uproot her life) and he is not paying me back very quickly so I'm out about 6 or 7k right now. I'm so bummed. I really want to go! I just can't.

22:00 taking my name out of the church was cathartic. However, there were stories (at the time anyway) of records people from the church telling family when someone had their names removed. Be safe :)

I'm trying to figure out the removing of my records without letting my whole family know! I'm the only one who is fully exmo but they still think talking to me will bring me back. Yeah, no. I want zero connection and no more missionaries at my door, ever. They literally follow you between address changes

It's incredibly sad that mormonism ruins God for some people I left, and now i'm a born-again christian. I feel closer to God than I ever have! If anybody reads this comment and you want to get closer to God, start with reading his word the bible in a translation you can understand. ❤

Ostracism was a big thing, even while we were in the church. I was a well educated and well spoken single mother of two beautiful little boys. There weee people in our ward who preferred to have their kids play with kids from fundamentalist baptist home schooler families instead of with my boys who needed friends in the church and we were always held at arm’s length. I was so insulted and if anything, am even more insulted now. I joined originally with my first husband because I thought it would save my marriage. It didn’t. I stuck around for awhile but ultimately left after we could no longer stomach how we were being treated. I tried again later on and actually married again, this time in the Boston Temple. But we both left when Salt Lake came out with all the anti-gay nonsense and supported Proposition 8. I left in a cloud of dust, never to darken their doors again.

I've had the missionary who converted me try to contact me a number of times since I left, but I haven't responded because I feel like he deceived me during my conversion. It doesn't help that we didn't really speak outside of his mission, and the fact that our lives have gone in dramatically different directions since then. He comes from a wealthy family and went to BYU to fulfill his dream of being a successful businessman; I come from below the poverty line and have given up multiple job opportunities to uphold my former obligations to the church, and have since developed a resentment for both the church, and businessmen. But after hearing this woman speak about her desire to go on a "Second Mission" to deconvert the people she preached to, I wonder if he is trying to do the same.

In person conversations are not backwards. It is the most powerful tool in persuasion. It's used in religion, but also in politics and in sales. Don't underestimate it.

Cara and Eve: you both need to get together with your husbands and write a will about the people that you want to have guardianship of your children if something happens to you because unless you do that they will automatically go to your relatives who are mostly Mormon .

It is hard for man to understand a god that makes universes and worlds , and infinite avatars to explore them , we are but dust compared to him , he can do things any way he wants weather we like it or not ,or it seams believable or not, I have chickens and I care for them every day, but they still can’t prove I exist
