Thank you for this video, it helps me understand more about how he lived before his retirement. He didn’t stop racing until this past January at the age of 5 (230 races) . And you can tell he was never abused, I found myself letting people know this also. I’ve had a lot of questions about what his condition was before he came to me . Yes some were but not all. I’m not for racing at all but I think that has to be said, so people will adopt greyhounds and not be afraid of a condition that some abused dogs have ( maybe aggression) .They are wonderful for older people like myself , he needs his walk in the morning and that helps me get out and enjoy the start of my day. I love him and I’m so happy he came into my life. So sorry to go on about him. 🤗

I'm late watching this,but loved it,I'm an owner trainer Ireland. Recently theres been reports on the awful and barbaric treatment of greyhounds. AND THE REPORT REALLY WAS A DISGRACE and put everyone in the same boat. I just want to say that not everyone is like the 2 or 3 people highlighted. Most owner/trainers look after their dogs like royalty,their loved ,well fed,exercised, and before our family gets looked after the kids(greys) are looked after,I've sat for many nights with a greyhound that's come home lame or gone off its grub,or just was needing that extra bit of coddling in the couch.We keep our retired dogs,they raced for us so we owe them comfort in their older or injured years. So I know people will sometimes say,their forced to run,their not!They love to run ,the prey drive is what drives them on.I love my dogs!much love.

This was an excellent video! My 1st job in 1985 was a leadout. I ended up being a Kennel Master and Chartwriter. Although the racetrack I worked at closed in 1992...I’ve been an avid greyhound racing better for many decades. I’ve lived in Florida for 20 years and we are still fighting to keep greyhound racing legal. Unfortunately the people here were fooled into believing that greyhound’s are abused. Evil organizations like PETA and The Humane Society convinced the Florida voters to vote Yes on Amendment 13. Anyone that truly understands dog racing knows that it’s a greyhound’s passion. They love it. Believe me I know it first hand. I was in charge of 100-125 greyhound’s everyday before they raced. Btw, I’m originally from Iowa. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏼

Another great video. Our grey came from Tijuana dog track. We got her strait from the track. We were able to see her try very hard to make friends with the dog in the mirror and her surprise that you can’t walk on swimming pool water. Her favorite game is to chase other dogs and nip their butt. She has a lot of tooth snags on her butt so I figured other greys like that game too. Looking forward to your muzzle video. N may I ask how much time they spend in their kennels/crates?
@momtoty
@momtoty 2 года назад
Greyhounds, if you own one, love to sleep and can sleep 22 hours a day if left alone. At the kennels, they are allowed to sleep in their crates for after breakfast naps, afternoon naps and then all night until the next morning. Between nap times, they are out of their crates and being walked, being given sprint runs, playtime with the others, potty time, rub downs and just relaxation outside. They are out of their crates about 2 hours at a time, around 3 or 4 times a day. On race day, they are at the tracks in holding areas until they race, which could be an hour to 5 hours, depending on what race they're in that day.

Erm… not every owner is sooo sweet and kind, they also get put to sleep when they don’t have potential profit making. Let’s not sugar coat, when in reality not all owners give a shapoop about their dog when they are not successful on the track… mine came to me because her Achilles was injured, after a pretty successful 3 years, she had the worst bed sores on her tummy, raw, weeping wounds… no longer profitable and therefore left until a charity got in touch with racing shitehead, and he decided she wasn’t worth the hassle of breeding from…. And that’s where we entered her life! She is no longer scared of her own shadow, she is however scared of even immediate family coming into the house, let alone friends, she hides and I think she thinks she’s being taken somewhere 😮😢 Viva la MEGAPOPS ❤❤❤

I wish all races were “fun” like your video but many greys break legs racing and get euthanized. Our local track has a history of abuse and mistreatment. Do you think the isolation in their kennels for their first few years is humane? Just trying to see the other side. I am in FL and happy to see racing end here next year.
@GreytShow
@GreytShow 4 года назад
I have not heard of euthanizing greyhounds if they break a leg (at least not in the US where there are laws prohibiting that) rather instead the leg is set and the dog placed for adoption. That is how we got our first greyhound, Wilson! I'm not sure what you mean by isolation for their first few years. Greyhound puppies stay with their littermates for their first two years of life while growing up and training. After that they go to the race track kennel where at night they sleep in their individual crate but all those are in one big room. During their downtime the kennel staff will alternate dogs in the turnout yards keeping the males separated from the females...for obvious reasons, lol! Hope that answers your questions. It all is a time in a greyhound's life that the public usually doesnt get the opportunity to see.

@@ThePunter29 They really love to run and chase, at least my grey does. The problem is what happens AFTER their racing career. There is an overbreeding bc not every hound is good enough to race. Some get adopted (like the one i have) but the majority of them get sold to bloodfarms, to "research", to other countries for meat or simply get culled. They all have pedigrees and almost all were well taken care of, thats true! But when they leave the racing kennel, everything might happen to them! Mine was on deathrow together with his brother in an animal shelter. I could look him up on "greyhound details" and he has won a bunch of money for his trainer. And then he had to go...
@momtoty
@momtoty 2 года назад
@@chestnutandmushrooms You must not be from the USA. Every NGA American racing greyhound is accounted for from birth until adoption. They are not culled, not euthanized, not sold for research or for meat. Every greyhound , whether they choose to race or not, gets adopted or stays with their owner. There are over 100 adoption groups in the USA and many have waiting lists because there is a shortage of available greyhounds. There are less than 7,000 bred each year because of the FL tracks closing, so adopting a retired greyhound is very hard to do. There is no over breeding and never was. No greyhounds here ever go to shelters. They only go to NGA approved adoption groups for adoption.
@PLSaundel
@PLSaundel 4 года назад
While Grey's love to run, when you set them free to run they don't keep running the same circle. The turns in the track account for a high number of injuries to dogs - so justifying racing with 'they love to run' is missing a lot of welfare concerns involved with racing.
@momtoty
@momtoty 2 года назад
The injury rate of racing greyhounds is very low. The tracks are groomed before each race to make them as safe as possible. Most injuries are minor like a broken toe or dislocated toe. There are more injuries to adopt greyhounds each year than racing greyhounds.

Greyhounds enjoy running they do not like to race. The ‘excitement’ they exhibit is because they are routinely held in crates barely large enough to turn around in for up to 21 hours a day. The thin skin you mention is true which is why they should not be out unprotected on a cold November Iowa morning. The scars most greyhounds have are due to racing injuries i.e hitting the rail, bumping another dog etc. Muzzles are used to control, dogs not for their protection. Greyhound racing is dying worldwide, that’s why Floridians ended it and after 2022 only two tracks will remain operational in the US in West Virginia. Let’s get to work closing those down.

They get exercised every day, rub downs every day, sprint runs, playtime, two balanced meals with vitamins and vegetables and pasta or rice mixed in, Vet checks every week and before and after each race. State inspectors randomly inspect the kennels every week. If they see any abuse it is stopped right then and there. How many kennels have you been to?
