Y’know another difference between Captain Planet and planetina? Planetina only had 4 elements. She was missing the 5th one: heart. Maybe that’s why she went totally off the deep end, she was missing the empathy and last element to make her complete

I figure it’s less she’s not *supposed* to exist for that long, and more that because she’s spent, heck 25 years, only existing for long enough to film a tv show, she just has no idea how the world works. Honestly, instead of Planetina going insane I would prefer if they conected her plot with Summer's and Ricks subplot . I mean imagine how f up it would be if Planetina, someone who is dedicated in preserving a single planet, learned that in such a small amount of time 2 entire planets and whatever life they once housed, were destroyed like they were nothing without anyone knowing or carrying about it and that made her feel like her entire existence amounts to nothing in the grand scheme of things. The thing with Morty being upset about Planetina going crazy is I see it being less about the actual act but what it signifies. I think Morty saw Planetina as symbol of that innocent, youthful optimism that he used to have before his adventures with Rick, and being with her let him enjoy that again. The heartbreak wasn't from seeing her snapping, but from seeing cold, harsh reality taking what he loved and grinding it beneath its boot like a bug.

I personally adopt the Meseek's theory: Her temporal existence connected her to Earth. In small doses, like to fight the bad guy of the week, she would feel the pain of the planet and assume it was because of the villain, go back home, and that was that. The longer she maintained a corporeal form, more longer and more powerful that connection was. It went from "The planet is in trouble!" to "The planet is hurting!" to "The planet is screaming it's death-knell, how can you not hear it?!" She was feeling the pain of the planet until it consumed her. She increased in violence and erratic behavior as she sought more and more desperate ways to stop the pain. But she can't. Because existence is pain.
@ashwhiteforest9078
@ashwhiteforest9078 Год назад
Girl has the power of the natural elements, but instead of using her powers to solve the problem in front of her, she attempts to outright undo the problem, because saving the earth from destruction is, by the very laws of inevitability, unnatural. If it wasn't humans, it'd be the sun expanding to swallow the earth. And her reaction would be to either destroy or remove the problem, not synthesize a solution; a thing that is, again, unnatural. At least when you exclude humans from the equation, who are in the end a product of nature. She can't reconcile the absurdity of not just her existence, but existence entirely, so responds to stopping pollution by setting a big fire on top of a coal mine. Couldn't freeze the miners the death? Then there's, "The corpses of tortured animals!" As if predation and even cruelty doesn't exist in nature. She's not the spirit of the Earth. She's the spirit of a slice of the past refusing to die. If she existed in Earth's youth, she'd have killed countless lifeforms to prevent the oxygen holocaust because it was destroying the delicate balance of earth. So really, her existence is pretty tragic. The only way she can change anything, for better or worse, is to essentially kill herself. But I guess the show writers didn't consider it past the joke premise.

The problem with characters like Captain Planet and Planetina, they preach "shallow ecology". They don't teach people to look for the root cause of these terrible things, they teach people to simply look at all these destructive things like coal mining as isolated problems, when in truth they're symptoms of a much deeper rot. This is the principle of "deep ecology", the primary framework that should be in people's minds is the ecological framework because that is what allows for all other frameworks, and the way to solve the problem is to target the root cause, not the symptoms. The mass murder of those miners is an exaggeration of the reaction prompted by these "shallow ecologists", in reality the mining operations simply foot the blame for what's going on, but the truth is that they are press-ganged into that line of work by highly corrupt governmental and corporate figures, utilising their favourite tools, the economy and the education system. The truth is that those are the people we need to stop. Shutting down the mining operations would only serve to decrease the number of jobs available, in a system that thrives on poverty and reliance, but if you follow the money trail to where it ends, you find huge multinational corporations and the governments that "rely on their generous donations."

I kinda give Captain Planet a pass since it was aimed at kids and I believe it was meant to inspire the kids to do what they can (pick up trash, recycle, etc) and build upon what they can do in the future (lobbying for renewable resources, using hybrid cars). Some issues, like puppy mills are too big for a single person and pretty complex, I won't lie, even if it is bad. Or even having less kids. And there was other stuff like AIDS, STDs, drugs/alcohol, and an episode that had a family-friendly stand-in for Hitler.
@malum9478
@malum9478 2 года назад
this is also, though, the fault of the writers. the issue is that they CHOSE to write her in this way to be a stand-in for radical environmentalists, while clearly not understanding the ideology in the first place. no one like planetina, with her power, would give a single shit about random coal miners. they'd fly over to the oil billionaire's house who owns that operation, and go "stop what you're doing or i'll throw you into deep orbit".

Just my opinion but I really like how they handled her "insanity" reveal. A very particular set of circumstances triggers her, and it only happens after her kids stop managing her and she finally gets to pick her own tasks and events. The kids wanted to make money with her so they did not give her missions based on how much good she could do for the world but how much good publicity they would get out of it. Avoiding her triggers is profitable for Planetina's brand. And knowing her for so long they probably know perfectly well how to avoid her triggers and make her look like a perfect cinnamon roll. Morty falls in love with her public image and Planetina herself doesn't know how far she is willing to go for the planet because how would she when she isn't put in situations that could ruin her image by making her chose between the planet and the people on it. With the kids gone she can finally decide for herself how to save the world, starting out with what is familiar (explaining why she didn't immediately go insane as soon as her kids didn't control her anymore) and slowly getting an understanding of what id modt effective and what she needs to do, eventually picking tasks she wants to tackle but probably wasn't ever allowed to, culminating in the coal miner incident. What I find so interesting is that ironically the kids who acted as her shackles were not so much holding her back as they were protecting the world from her (even though they were motivated by greed rather than a good heart), and neither Morty nor Planetina knew the full situation, hence couldn't predict it would come to this if she was freed. Also, Morty presented himself as a strong environmentalist to get with her, never giving her the impression he wasn't down with saving the planet at any cost. He ran into a forest fire to rescue small woodland creatures at what would seem like great personal risk to Planetina, not because he really cares about her interests but to appeal to her, still that probably sent a very clear message about his priorities to Planetina. Ultimately they both fell in love with persona rather than person and once the mask slipped they couldn't see each other the same way anymore. And I love that there was nor real foreshadowing of her mental state and actual priorities, because irl that isn't always the case either. Sometimes it takes time and coincidence for you to figure out what your partner is capable of, and once you've seen that side of them there is no going back.

Hard to blame Morty for seeking a partner so strongly; he has no healthy relationships. To be fair - I think an argument for Planetina would be that she being a person created by these rings only comming into existence when summoned in a way limits her experience and technically cuts down on how old she is if you account for all the days she isn’t brought into the world via Magic or whatnot. So I think her nature of existence as well as her limited life knowledge due to lack of agency in her life would put her just slightly above Morty in terms of at least mental age/development. And only when she has the rings herself to stay in the world having her own agency now will she properly age and grow on par with what we know in terms of human adjacent development - for better or for worse. So if anything her developing beyond her “kids” keeping her stunted and under their control is what breaks their relationship to me. That as in her instant sharp left turn into eco-terrorism.

Yup, we see her "children" are middle-aged to old meanwhile she is still young, maybe she's immortal but I think it's much more likely that she does age, but only whilst she's summoned, showing just how little they brought her out. There's that much of a desync between her and the children who have become cynical assholes because they controlled their only form of authority, planetina and Captain planet are supposed to educate the kids and the world, whilst planetina has been sheltered and unable to help. Essentially, the roles have reversed, they control power over her whereas Captain planet is the leader of the (planeteeers? - ive never seen Captain planet) and informs their opinions on the planet and climate change. Ensuring that they remain positive. Messed up stuff
@47jakobi
@47jakobi 2 года назад
I didn't find the switch to be that surprising. She was sheltered, controlled, made to act so sweet and perfect. Once the reality of the world got a hold of her, she immediately reflected the hate and destruction of it. If she had slowly been introduced to reality, it would have been more of a natural transition. That abrupt sink or swim situation brings the "survivor" or primal reaction out of anyone

I grew up loving Captain Planet as a kid, sure the show was a subtle as a baseball bat made out of cement to the face, but I do believe there was a good message and intent behind it all. Wathcing it as an adult, I feel a heavy dosage of nostalgia, but acknowledge that it's a pretty heaveyhanded show. Some of the shit that the villains pull off, there's no way it'd fly in the real world, but in the show, it makes sense. Anyway, as for where Captain Planet goes when he's not the powers combined and magnified, he kind of ceases to exist, he basically returns to his base elements. In fact you could argue that he doesn't exist at all until "heart" gets added to the mix, as he can survive/exsist without half of his powers. IIRC there was an episode where Captain Planet is stranded without the powers of water, fire and air/wind, because Ma-Ti and Kwami, Heart and Earth respectively were trapped in on a base out in space. So it kind of implies that Cap, is limited to planet Earth. But then there's another episode where Cap is trapped inside a magic prison in his full form, but it's implied because he was drawn from the rings. The show's logic get's a bit confusing from time to time.

I feel like (and this is totally my opinion not a critique of the show for the style they choose) that if they wanted to be more plot driven that they could have made things work. Mortys relationship with planetina was almost a weird reflection of his partnership with rick; a sort of sidekick who just hangs around out of necessity or care with no actual agency. They could have had morty start to break the cycle by voicing his concerns (you know, before she starts literally murdering people) and it be made clear how despite appearances to him, she’s just a damaged and scared person. In a way they kind of fit each other; he’s anxious and feels like he has no control over his life, and she has been constantly lead to believe she’s totally alone and in charge of saving a dying world. Morty makes her feel like someone’s on her side, and she makes him feel like he matters. The newer outlook could even have theoretically lead to conflict between Morty and rick that might have made the end of season five a bit less abrupt.

I mostly like Planetina as a comment on Captain Planet (CP from now on - this is a long one). I remember, when CP first aired. Back then environmentalism was still a new thing, especially in kids media. CP was one of the first non-villainious examples. (Like how in Batman TAS all the villains suddenly got "green" motivations? Catwoman and the Penguin were all of a sudden interested in the plight of endangered cats and birds, respectively. That show was when Poison Ivy first got her "kill all humans to save the plants" motif!) In hindsight, of course, CP was not perfect. His main shortcoming was his focus on individual efforts. "Only you can prevent polution"? Yeah, that was him. His villains were cartoon villains just like Planetina's Diesel Weasel, who polluted because they found it fun. He never mentioned corporations or how environmental damage is caused by their greed and negligence. Why? Well, because those same corporations bought the TV adds on the channels, that played CP, and they didn't like it. So, CP was bound by corporate chains, just like Planetina is at the beginning of her episode. But unlike him, Planetina got free. When Morty took her rings (and, I assume, gave them to her), her chains were cut, and she could see the real problem. Not children, who don't recycle newspapers, or random local fire, but wide-spread, systemic destruction. And she decided to fulfill her purpose and stop it. Is she extreme? Yes. But is her development such a shock? I don't think so.

I think the idea behind the episode is that in the original show, Captain Planet had five kids, Ma-Ti, whose power Heart essentially boiled down to Empathy, the ability to connect and understand people on an emotional level. That's why Captain Planet was able to restrain himself despite the fact that in theory getting rid of humans in general by force would probably help the planet as a whole. Planetina however never had that, only the four elements, meaning she lacked that empathy and thus the ability to properly connect with people on an emotional level. Thus she couldn't understand things from a human perspective and is thus simply the elements unleashed.

I think Planetina never spent enough time not in actually on earth, I'm assuming she was in a pocket void or something when she isn't saving the world, and the longer she was present on earth, the harder it was for her to block out all of the bad things happening, like literally hearing the world screaming in pain. She doesn't have tools to deal with constantly being on earth and surrounded by shitty humans.

14:55 it may be out of nowhere but it made complete sense why she went crazy. Her kids only brought her out to fix specific issues and then she was sent back to her world. She thought she was making the world better. Now that she is free she realizes exactly how much trouble the world is in and that causes her to go crazy 18:32 right, but all those people Morty has witnessed worst things happen to are strangers on far away planets that have nothing to do with him. But whenever the situation affect humans on earth, the planet he lives on, he tries his best to stop them. We have seen this happen with the talking fart that wanted to kill all humans, the world where rock turns everybody into monsters and he even tried to stop Rick in the first episode when he wanted to blow up the world. If it affects his world/ his family he has a problem with it. If it affects other worlds and other beings, he's more willing to let it slide. So it fits into his to stop her from killing earthlings unnecessarily.

Another thing to note is that Morty despite what he's done, GENERALLY treasures life, especially HUMAN life. We've seen him now, going back to other planets and righting the wrongs Rick left despite the fact he could just pretend it never happened. If he doesn't see anything to empathize with in another race he seems to not care if they'll die, but otherwise he tries to do the right thing. Outside of when he has his tantrums, I suppose. So on top of the reasons you gave, seeing her kill innocent humans was too much.

Funny enough in the actual Captain Planet show, there’s like a episode or two that shows the kids in the future. They’re all jaded and tired of being ring holders, and pretty much feel like it’s only so much they can do. Captain Planet himself isn’t even what he used to be.

I think the real issue Morty had with planetina killing is she was the one part of his life that wasn't morally gray when him and Rick kill people it's either deserved or accidentally but Morty from the start till now accepts that's just what being with Rick is about but planetina was heroic kind nothing she did was bad she was something pure just like how Morty idolized the vindicators they were everything him and Rick weren't good and pure until Rick showed him how gray they were Edit: I think what drove planetina to murder was Morty before she would just rough people up send a message of good will and peace but Morty killed for her she treats her killings the same as Morrie's she says "you killed my children" no remorse or pain she understood they were bad people so she's taking Morty's example and killing bad people

Also, I just wanted to point out, I think Planetina's sudden outburst against the miners was intentionally out-of-nowhere. I've been in a relationship where something just blindsided me after years of rapport and consistency. These things do happen, and I think maybe they wanted to communicate that feeling by opting out of any foreshadowing. Sometimes someone you're sure you know just becomes an alarmingly different person out of nowhere due to one significant instance of pressure or persuasion and (in my case, at least) stays that way for the rest of their life.

I actually think this was good for both characters. Planetina was ignorant of the people using her, and lacked the willingness to compromise on eco issues. Morty wanted something normal( by the Sanchez standard), and wanted to connect with someone that wasn't using him, or keeping him around as a shield or to make themselves look better(jessica, and summer). And he was willing to do whatever it took to get it, even to his own detriment I have a feeling that the 2 of them will make up later in the series and try to work through there faults together. Also lets remember morty has her power rings and he didn't use them to control her, so that means he letting her do her thing. Plus I hoping for a vinicator episode with planetina being involved

Actually, Planetina's "transformation" made total sense: she's never known an existence outside of being an eco-warrior turned marketing product, and with the latter out of the way, she's rather destined to revert fully back to the former, since it represents the "decent side" of her that she kept as her primal identity throughout her life. She was never allowed to flourish beyond the limitations of the rings, never capable of experiencing live and getting in touch with all of it's characteristics and nuances. Or - as Dr. Void belows me has already commented - she's never existed outside of those short moments when she had to "save the earth". It's all she knows. And withouth any restraints, she is bound to triple or quadruple down on it, at least for the first part of her free life. In a way, this might be why the presumed age gap doesn't come forward all that much: Morty is actually the one who is more mature, who has "lived" more "life" out of both of them. In the end, that's the real age gap that terminates their relationship. Also: in the end, she replies to Morty's accusations with "but you killed my kids...." This is something barely touched upon, but yes: in her mind, the only people she ever bonded with were just brutally murdered by her new lover. And it's generally presented to her as a good thing. This might have made her double down on the mindset that "the ends justify the means". According to her view, Morty is a hypocrite who allows himself to commit atrocities for the greater good yet doesn't support her in doing so.... reducing her to being just a piece of property just like her "kids" did. This makes the "fuck you" in the end so heartwrenching....

I just wanted the relationship to last longer. It having a timer on half an episode-length really kills the meaning or value it can hold since it is all too brief. Though I absolutely despise that episode with the remote that "save's his place in time." Morty finds a fulfilling relationship that seems genuinely wonderful and good for his well-being... But the writers just make Jerry f"ck the whole thing up because they don't want to deal with writing relationships or anything outside of the status quo.

@Skana

Great video but I think there are two thing you missed when understanding Planetina. First is that we aren't meant to fully understand Planetina's character before their breakup, the second is that Planetina is very likely discovering who she is at this time too. You said she is out of character but we only ever saw her while she was showing interest in/being romantic with Morty or when she was being submissive to her controlling kids. The show never allowed us to see the moments when she was allowed to be an individual. She didn't have an established personality aside from being an abused superhero who was into Morty. At first her freedom doesn't seem too problematic, bringing wind to the turbines of a city without power and scaring off poachers. Something her kids would have let her do but they represent her first decisions without their consent. Then she starts slashing tires to prevent driving and Morty looks nervous, she commits arson on an anti-environment Congressman's home and proudly shows it off to Morty on the news while Morty is appalled, then she attacks a coal mine and kills the workers leaving Morty horrified. Honestly, they show her going into a rage but I think they set it up so that it would have been believable for her to have happily done it and gleefully gone back to Morty proud of her accomplishment, not realizing she did anything wrong. You did comment that her and Morty were moving too fast. Morty meets her, falls in love, asks her to move in, and runs off with her in the period of a few days. Morty only really starts to get to know her after they run off together which they show us in a montage of escalating incidents. We get to know her at the same rate Morty gets to know her so your surprise at her actions is exactly what Morty is feeling. Just like how you're wondering why they didn't foreshadow it, Morty is probably wondering to himself why he didn't see the signs. The lesson being don't move too fast into a relationship before you get to know someone. I don't necessarily agree that her actions were hard to believe or out of character, but even if they were, it would be understandable. When Morty frees and runs off with Planetina, she gains control of her life for the first time. It may not be a matter of not having spent enough time with her to get to know her but not knowing her when she had enough freedom to have a real personality not dictated by her kids consent. In contrast to her previous relationship with her kids, Morty allows her control of this relationship. He helps Planetina do what she wants to do. This is not just the first time the audience sees her expressing her individuality, it is her discovering her individuality and figuring out who she is as a person. It's also important to consider that the episode is poking fun at the very concept of Captain Planet. Suddenly snapping and killing people might be out of character for a regular superhero who's primary goal is protecting people but the embodiment of the Earth should view humanity as their natural enemy. Robot Chicken did it years ago with Captain Planet realizing humanity will never change and committing genocide against the human race. One Punch Man did it as a joke with the monster Vaccine Man being created by the Earth in a last desperate act to save itself from humans, but superheroes just saw it as another supervillain and killed it without a second thought. Freeing an enslaved Captain Planet-esque superhero being controlled by people not interested in stopping humanity from destroying the world sounds a lot more like a supervillain origin story. You would kind of need to justify why they wouldn't become a supervillain rather than why they would.

I have a couple of ideas why Planetina went crazy 1) The idea of absolute power corrupting someone. Since Planetina no longer has any hindrances (I think the rings and her kids were keeping her powers in check) she felt like she could do whatever she wanted however she wanted. 2) The line about the planet screaming makes me think that she’s possibly realizing that the way she’s “helping” the planet may be doing more harm than good, overall.

Rick is a very lonely person, especially during his adventures. The world is confusing and all the adventure only makes his awkwardness and insecurity grow. Like the love potion, he doesn't care about the consequences, he just wants someone to love. Like a normal teen guy, you know? Also, a personal theory as to why Planetina freaks out could be that her children dying had some negative, unstable effect on her. Like without the humanity she falls apart? Also good video essays you make! I wanna get into those myself and maybe you could give me some pointers on it?

That, and the show's indicated a few times that access to the full multiverse renders everything without meaning. Go ahead and blow up a planet: There are an infinite number just like it. His break-up with Bird Person came because Rick revealed that he didn't actually care about the cause that brought them together, fighting the oppressive Federation - because there are an infinity of universes where the Federation rules, and an infinity where they don't, making the whole issue of fighting them in one universe to be entirely pointless. Nihilism is the only way he has to deal with that knowledge - reject meaning, and try to lose himself in drink and drugs and distracting adventures.
