My favorite line surrounding the movie is when the director said "I have respect for the source material"

If they make a good story first and then shoot good 1v1 action scenes with over the top fatalities, it would be a huge hit. The story was a cliche archetype around Cole Young’s character, the choices made with certain characters are super questionable, and we never got to the tournament. People walked away from this film only remembering Kano lol

May this be a lesson to any company stick to the source material

They was better off turning this into a tv series, we obviously know a second one is coming based on Cole telling his boss he’s gonna go to Hollywood and recruit Johnny Cage. The next movie will take place at the tournament. They coulda made every fight scene a different episode. I’m highly upset with how they did Jax 🤦🏿‍♂️

First-time director, an amateur screen writer, a 55$ million budget, and a bunch of stunt men and women who are not the best actors (only three good ones)… It was incredibly disappointing.

It feels weird that I'm actually kinda glad it's not making money. This movie was awful and has fucked it's worldbuilding from the very beginning with terrible writing and characters (except Kano and maybe kinda Kabal). I'd rather they just start over in like 2 years and get people on it that do their homework.

*IT'S SHIT* Offensively terrible. That's what happened when you hire pretenders who did their homework on wiki and were so preoccupied with what would look so cool that they forgot having a good story, editing, pacing, consistency etc was important. It's littered with awful acting and discrepancies.

How is it tanking? It went to HBO Max for starters and that’s not accounted for in these figures! Plus cinemas in the U.K. have only just reopened today and Mortal Kombat at the iMAX was packed and it’s a Monday! They never expected this movie to be a big blockbuster hit anyway! I don’t think you can really expect big numbers when we’re still in a pandemic!

Movie was bad, it shouldn’t get a sequel with the same directors and writers

Pretty sure it did fail because it not only completely screwed over the source material with Cole replacing Johnny as well as Liu Kang as the main characters, but also every other unnecessary change. I didn't watch it as I don't support changing source material for representation, personal taste and so on, since it's lazy plus really ignores the whole point of adaption in its entirety, when you add unnecessary changes. That and in my personal opinion, Mortal Kombat just doesn't transition well into film, unless they actually do the tournament, which they rarely do or in this case stuff it full of filler like Cole.

Mortal Kombat will be better off as a HBO max series if the box office is anything to go by.

I actually enjoyed MK but I can't look away from its flaws and do agree that it isn't as good as the 1995 movie or another movie that is on some theaters with it right now said to beat it in box office. Meanwhile a certain little half demon is laughing at the MK movie's box office numbers inside her bucket.

It is sad. I wanted to see this movie in the theaters but this wasn’t possible in my country (the Netherlands). I wanted to support he creators so I wanted to buy the movie online. I saw it wasn’t availiable, it was released online way later than the release day in the US. Because I was so hyped I just saw it illegal. It is a shame

I think the dip happened because word of mouth. When it was accessed early by some people there was more positive buzz but once it was available everywhere you saw way more people taking it to town which is deserved.

Focus it on the Fall of Edenia.. it is always mentioned but never seen. It is the BEST way to explain where Kitana was, Mileenas creation and story, and introduce Shao Khan and how ruthless and powerful he is. Seriously tho, several mains are Edenian, and Edenia is always only referred to in a sentence here and there.. its about time someone actually focuses on it, the story and chatacters are all there, WB FIlms just need to wake the fuck up and realize what's been there all along, plus it's the perfect opportunity to have a female-centric and diverse cast, which seems to all rage lately

I'd say MK would need at least 110 million to start to be somewhat profitable, because the "budget" does not include marketing.

Before anyone starts saying, it's in a pandemic so of course it's gonna struggle. Look at Godzilla vs. Kong and it made bank at the box office, so there shouldn't be no excuse.

I desperately want this movie to be recreated. I even have a better story in mind although its improvised upon this one.

At the end of the end of the day. Its like an introduction to the series bit even to that it failed, i mean i love the movie but i just watched his review and it opened my eyes. Obviously in the sequel when they cover the tournament i think it will do very well.

About 20 minutes into the movie I knew it was going to be dissapinting. Only way to fix the issue in the sequel is to stay with the material and bring back Quan chi because you cant have scorpion and sub zero blood feud without Quan chi.

A huge factor is the fact that its R18+, it is VERY hard for a R18+ movie to make numbers like MA and lower. I know about 15ppl who have been turned away, even if they're with parents. It's a movie best seen on big screen, like GvKong, however anyone could go see GvK, plus Godzilla has a bigger cult following in Asia and America. Now with HBO MAX streaming perfect quality, it is now easier than ever to download a pirated version in full 1080HD, has barely anything really to do with quality of film these days.

Hoping for a Mortal Kombat series tho.

The only reason MK movie beat out Demon Slayer was cause of the movie was only out for a week and it's usually in select theatres

The uneven release date was also one of the reasons. Many would have seen it in random websites. Especially in my country (India) as most of you would know the pandemic situation is very worse, they should have released the movie on like April 8(like Malaysia). Instead they released it on April 23 in 5 states out of 29 and closed theatres on April 24. I watched it in theatre and there were only six people, including me. On April 8-20 the pandemic 😷 situation was not that bad here. If they released it at that time, it could have really helped in box office growth bcos India has such a big population!

The plot for Godzilla vs Kong has a pretty dumb plot, but the fight scene were 9/10

The release schedule really hurt the movie too, they killed all the hype. Don't forget that the red band trailer broke records, but they gave 2 weeks to domestic audiences to get over it.

Reason for the recent low gross income is because youtube is full with reviews , and many of them are not in favor for this movie to be sold. Which in my opinion is absolutely justice, cause movie wasnt that good. It is a mediocre movie and what else WB could expect ?

Mortal Kombat is a video game based film as majority of the world knows King Kong and Godzilla it has a bigger fan base. Not many people know what the actual story is to MK. Also for an R rated film it’s hard to receive big numbers most kids wouldn’t even be able to watch which is why pg13 MK 95 made more so fast. Giving the director was limited to a certain budget I believe this film was great and has lived up also appreciated the fan service. You really can’t compare MK 95 to 21 when there is a pandemic right now less theaters are open also the film is available on a streaming service which HBO max has reported it’s the biggest film being streamed the most at this point. That alone says alot

Man thats so disappointing 😞 GvK is still in my theatre and MK is already gone 😳 I was really hoping they were gonna get at least one sequel. This one was SOOO close to getting it right. I bet if they were able to give it one more go they would fix the mistakes they made. Probably wont now, but I guess thats what they get for fumbling so poorly.

I loved both pretty equally so both in the same night and I actually like the Mortal Kombat movie a little bit more than the Kong movie.

I love the movie. But I'm not surprised in the slightest. With a series like MK,you can't easily make it mainstream. It's audience of course is gonna be fans. Not casual moviegoers. That's also why the 2017 Power Rangers movie failed

When you make a dogshit movie, expect dogshit results. Furthermore, when you have Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada in the cast and you still fuck everything else up so badly that the movie still tanks after the initial weekend (before people realized it was dogshit), you hopefully stop making/ruining movies.

I see it like this its very possible WB wrote a lot of these movies that were screwed over by the Pandemic as losses already and in a pre-pandemic movie this might have turned a from of profit. I heard not long ago they plan to go to theatre exclusive again next year with WB films. This exactly the kinda movie you stream at home BC its just not a film worth paying to say in the movies.

To be fair; initial weekend for MK 2021 had roughly 3 million views on HBO Max. If you put an average of $10 per view to signify ticket sales in some wsy, that's another $30 million on open weekend, but that's funny money, not real money in any way. It doesnt mean much, but it means more then nothing. I dare WB to make a sequel to this trash movie. It will tank hard as all the MK fans who did not like this one, wont give a sequel a dime.
