It’s so incredibly rare that something you’ve loved so much in your most precious developmental years that made such an impact, that the guy that helped develop all this is so humble and willing to STILL talk about the journey and still be excited about it. It makes all of this even more special. The MK community is one of the most loyal. ❤
First off? A huge respect for you for getting the man himself to interview with! Secondary? MK has forever changed my childhood (In a good way of course) Thank you Ed Boon and team for the 30 Years continuous support 💙
Man I was 2 when that game came out! I started playing when I was 8 and since then I never skipped a game! MK has became my life! What a great journey!
Live action movies, tv shows, animated shows and comics as well! Even all the bad ones! Played ‘em all, watched ‘em all and read ‘em all! I even watched that crappy Web series, that never made it even on the silver screen, let alone big screen! What was it called “Federation of combat” or something, yeah…that was horrible, but i’m proud to admit at least i got ‘em all! Haha For better or worse…
I literally had to stop this video in the middle so I can say that this guy hit at boon, with power point key questions and anytime I get to see Ed Boon being questioned, it makes me smile like a kid that I am from the '80s on to the 90s growing up with mortal Kombat, nostalgia, retro, arcady.. is what this interview brings me back to. I appreciate everything about this man in this game that I play every day to this day and I'm 42 years old, Ed boon, I love you and I thank you for such great game that I'm always going to play forever as long as you keep making them, LOL. Thank you netherrealm
I’ll be 31 on December 3. My real name is Jackson. But once I learned about Jax Briggs’ real name is the same as mine, I started calling myself Jax. My favourite character is Sub-Zero . Three decades of brutal display of art. The greatest fighting game franchise ever. Happy 30th, MK! This was a dope ass interview! #MortalKombat
Saw Mr. Boon on a plane ride and as we were walking off the plane, I politely said " Mr. Boon, thank you for the awesomeness." He turned around and gave me a nice thank you. Everyone else on the plane was very confused 😆
What a absolute treat! Ed boon is the man. I’ve played MK for 30 years. I got the very first one on my genesis and I’ve been hooked ever since. Every time I hear mortal kombat it’s always good memories. ❤
Mortal kombat has always been a big part of life. Ever since I played MK3 on Sega I was hooked. I’m happy it’s still around and is as successful as it is. Good interview and insight! FINISH HIM
Ed Boon is such an awesome and humble dude. His AIAS award reception was so great to watch. It's weird to look back and see how much influence this game series has had on my life.
Ed boon is a legend amoung men for his work and total dedication to mortal kombat! there were times when they totally missed the mark and rather than give up they just listened to what the fans told them and they improved on it EVERY time.
I'm a big Mortal Kombat fan. Thank you for bringing it to life. Scorpion is my favorite character. I play it at the arcade and on Sega Genesis. Thank you Ed. I really appreciate it. I'm 44 years old.
I remember I was only 12 yrs old in ‘92 and I was at the country’s biggest arcade (3 Floors) FunSpot in New Hampshire. And I saw about 20 kids surrounding this arcade game and going absolutely crazy. As I muscled my way in I got my first glimpse of Mortal Kombat. When I saw the blood and the fatalities,I understood why everyone was gathered around cheering. I remember that moment very vividly.
Damn I know that was a sight to see at 12. I used to play in arcades but by this time MK had been around for some years so ppl weren’t that excited about it here
Mk is and always will be my favourite games I’ve got every one on launch day starting from mk trilogy. I stayed with them threw deadly alliance. Deception. Armageddon I loved an cherished them all. My 5 year old sons name is Raiden. Thank you for everything Ed
Great interview. I'm 35.. Been playing mk since I was 6. First mk movie is my favourite movie of all time. Mk9 Imo is the best mk game ever. Stoked for whats to come! Lots of love from Pakistan
Worshipped 1 2 and 3 as they were all coming out, still play 2 and [Ultimate] 3 regularly to this day on actual arcade machines and also on Fightcade. Always a good time, and always have hometown pride about MK growing up in Chicago area my whole life. The popularity and madness of MK was very prevalent at the arcades I'd frequent as a kid and I'll never forget how blown away I was seeing MK2 for the first time at a Namco Cyberstation up at my local mall in Waukegan, IL.
I’m 34 and I’m still playing MK through the years , Shaolin Monks , Deception , Armageddon , MK9 , I still love the franchise after all this time Long Live MK
32:45 This is what I really admire about Ed Boon - he is not full of himself or takes credit for everything but acknowledges others that have led to the success of Mortal Kombat. For most people Acclaim might not mean too much at this point but without them MK would probably not have managed to get such popularity along with Larry Kassanoff who went all in with the movie against all odds - not even the studio back then believed they would make much return on it...
LOVE how Ed Boon talks about Mortal Kombat like a kid showing off their favorite toy! It brings so much joy for me to see his genuine happiness and love for not only his creation but the positive effect it's had over the years with it's fans! Great video and thank you for taking the time to make such a great video!
ED BOON , IF YOU ARE READING THIS- YOU SHOULD KNOW ONE THING - YOU AND THE WHOLE TEAM OF MIDWAY/NETHEREALM ARE AWESOME,everything mortal kombat related is awesome, there are some stuff that great , but most of the stuff ARE LEGENDARY- you guys deserve all the glory and success you can wish for. I GOT ONE REQUEST -> PLEASE YOU ARE ALREADY THERE AT THE MOUNT RUSHMORE , BUT GIVE US THE FANS THE MOVIE WE ALL DESERVE> PLEASE ED BOON.
I was there when the 1st MK arcade hit the gaming center, I stand in line whether to play or just to watch, since then MK had become a part of my life. I love every aspects of it, I played all the MK games, I watched all the movies, I collected some of the toys (which is very difficult to find here in Indonesia) I love MORTAL KOMBAT, thank you for Mr. Ed & great MK developer team, for making my & other MK fans childhood awesome
I'm a Mortal Kombat fan since 1995, I was 9 years old, only reading the gaming magazines about it, not even had a console yet. First we had a bad NES copy, but then in 1997 we got the prosper MK3 for SNES, hearing Shao Khan saying the name of the characters was superb! Remember running to a friend to get the move lists, playing with them or with my brother, or sometimes on my own, trying to get the fatalities. MK3 Liu Kang's slot-machine was the brake through, took me quite a few tires to get it right :) I'm 38 now and while my life got much busier, sometimes I still play months with the current MK game. The MK9 come back was great, on the day of release I played it for 12 hours straight. I like the fact, and hope so, that Ed Boon sorted the company out after bad news with some staff. Now playing MK11, and spending lots of hours of grinding lol, let's be honest some tower/extras requirements just take too long to get, (PLEASE ED BOON AS 30TH ANNIVERSARY GIFT, HALF ALL THOSE REQUIREMENTS) but with all those modes and extra characters, I'm big fan of Spawn and Terminator, Rambo, Joker, even Kenshi isn't playable but he still shows up a bit, it's a 9/10 fantastic game for sure. Mortal Kombat is part of my gaming life for 25 years now, and I hope to see the day when MK 20 will be released by Ed Boon. All I can say to close this is: dam dam damdam...MORTAL KOMBAAAAT!
Definitely a rider from the beginning I remember reading game informer with my friends waiting for release bought at least one copy of every game just bought mk 10 the other day thx for your hard work ED...thx for scorpion!!
30 yrs of history of mk i remember like it was yesterday playin mk3 on ps1 since a young kid from kindergarten seeing how cool it was now grown up still playin mk to dis day im proud to call myself a hardcore fan
SECRET! At 13:43 The move Ed Boon talked about was actually re added to Kano later on! I’m MK trilogy for PlayStation if you press select on Kano it will allow you to play as classic Kano from mk1, and that version of Kano is nearly identical to original mk1 but he actually has that spinning helicopter blade move added!
I was 12 years old when I made my weekly visit to the Arcade on the 1st weekend that MK was released. The sounds I heard as I pushed myself through the crowd to get a look at the game have never been forgotten And I too still buy and play every new game. Can't wait for the next one
I've been with you the whole ride, Ed. For me, the most accesible, charismatic and down to earth in the industry. Can't believe you where in your twenties when the journey started and now you are almost a third age man. Kudos to the interviewer, he asked great questions.
Great video an interview, I’m 40yrs old now, been playing since first released on sega genesis and arcade, appreciation to those who started it all 30yrs ago, been great entertainment over the years
I doubt Ed will ever see this but PLEASE give us another Shaolin Monks game! That is one of the (if not THE) best fighting platform adventure games ever made. I can't even imagine what could be done with today's technology on a game like that.
My God dude! What an amazing interview! The flow, the questions, the insights Ed provided, I enjoyed this so much! Big time fan here as well like all of us in this comment section. I'm now going to check out your channel for sure! Thank you for this gem of an interview!
I look up to creative people like him. I hope he lives a long life and continues to be a part of MK franchise for as long as possible. I hope he remasters in full HD the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. That would be amazing. Either way MK11 was real good and I hope they always improve as they always have been.
I will NEVER forget...in late 1991(?) my older brother managed the local arcade. He was privy to all the pre-internet gaming rumors. I was at the diner table, telling my parents about how much I loved "Street Fighter" when he walked in from work and sat down; he proceeded to tell me how stupid I was for being so excited about old news (e.g. Street Fighter 2) and how this new game was being made where they took pictures and video of real humans, that the fighters would actually look real. I remembered Pit Fighter, but didn't make the connection at that time. Plus, Pit Fighter sucked. So, when my dad took me to the movies (Surf Ninja's, I think?) and I glimpsed my first MK cab in the lobby, I lost my mind... 30 freaking years. What a ride. I became obsessed with MK from the moment I saw it and throughout the 90s into the 2000s. I still play each installment, but cannot possibly explain the impact of this game (Mortal Monday, anyone? ABACABB even?) had on the culture; SEGA literally owes more to MK than Sonic for it's early 90's rise - though, it could be argued that Nintendo deserves as much or more of that credit for insisting it be censored 🤣 Cheers to Ed, John, and the entire team. Well deserved.
Been with MK since ‘92. 43yo now. Still my fave game franchise. Hell my kids love Mk2 😂 bad parenting I guess 🤦🏽♂️ they’re 8 and 6. Got shelves full of the Storm 1/12 figures. May it long continue! Thank you for this awesome vid Brian & Ed 💪🏽
Happy 30th Anniversary! This game brought so many good times and memories to so many and MK1 was the first game I ever owned and Have been in love ever since.
I'm crying, this was the first video fighting game i fell in love with when i first came to the United States, I literally remember being 4 years old and seeing it for the first time.
I still remember when the first MK dropped in arcades and the line ups to play it... What a fun and amazing childhood. I remember playing as Scorpion for the first time and trying to figure out how the game worked! Thank you Ed!
funway in batavia Illinois. first time i saw mortal kombat arcade. there was a line to play it. i put my quarters up and waited. ive been a fan since then. mortal kombat 2 and shaolin monks have been my favorite. i rode my bike to gala lanes in carol stream illinois after school every day and played mk2. i brought a notebook to write down the moves and fatalities we found. no internet then, and gaming magazine were too slow. these are my best video game memories.
Such a great interview. Ed's one of those industry vets who I'd love the chance to just sit down, have some beers, and talk about game dev with. It really was incredible what his team was able to do back then, as a software developer, I'd be really curious to hear some of the nitty gritty.
The №1 Game in my list of fighting games. The first REAL fighting game that i played been as a 6 years old kid on Sega Mega Drive 2. Since then, nothing has changed. I still love Mortal Kombat as the first time when i saw it and played it. No other fighting game is installed on my PC, but only Mortal Kombat. And just in case, if i wanted to play some fighting game, MK is always first in the list.
I remember the first time I played Mortal KOMBAT was at a pizza joint, i picked sub zero made it through the first opponent then made it to second opponent which was scorpion on the bridge and he beat me and knocked me off that bridge and my mind was blown. Then later on when MK 2 hit arcades, it was like being blown away all over again with that jump in quantity AND quality of content. I could go on and on lol MK is so lit
The Deadly Alliance background got me hyped for the new MK I hope some 3d aspects come to the new game kinda like my 1st MK (MK4) but my favorite MK games would have to be MK Deception and MKX
Even though it's not the definitive version of MK, those PS2 era fighting games were surprisingly good at being fun single-player games that really helped moved the fighting game genre forward. They came out during a time when the genre was going through somewhat of a drought as there weren't that many fighting games released during that time and most gamers were very focus on the rise of competitive FPS games like Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament and Halo.
Ed boon is the goat I loved every single mk game there was especially the ps2 era ik the day he announces the new one he is going to shut the internet down that’s why he being humble and letting everyone do their thing I swear
I have played mortal Kombat since I was 6. My first game in the series was Shaolin monks and it just blew me away and made me an instant life long fan. Years later and I've played every game and have dedicated so much time learning about everything I can. Forever thankful for this series and the hard work every single person has put in and can't wait for more
Ed, I was a big street fighter fan in the early 90's. Me and the gang were hanging out at the local put put and they came over to me and said: "Dude, you gotta try this game". Honestly, I didn't think much of it at the time (MK1). Later on, hanging out at the local pool hall in Tennessee, they had the MKII arcade there. I was like, "Damn, this is nice!". It just so happened my Cousin-in-law had MKI at my uncle's whom I was staying with at the time. I early ordered MKII and drove to Alabama to pick it up. It indeed was fun playing, but, I was always more of a street fighter fan. Seeing how street fighter had not really changed in a number of years, I bought the SNS version of ultimate MK3. Now that I am 55, I have MKXL and MK11 well, and have money. What a wonderful makeover. Seriously, the games of the past had all the moves basic, boring, but with special moves to them. They seem to take on diff rolls and consequinces, a major improvement. I do miss the games of the past, however and I think that a steam version of the preceeding years is in order. For the future, let's look at a contender...There are many fighting styles throughout the globe, street fighter attempted to capture this, but they will always, seriously be a cartoon fighting game...thoughts?
Hadnt played a MK game in a long time. Had kids, oldest (10) started to play said he was good and could beat me. Challenge was made, accepted, and 10 flawless victories later with Scorpion he said I couldn't be him any more. Thank you for creating something that generations can play. Will the next MK game include the new guy from the Movie? Just a suggestion, MK 30th Anniversary game has EVERY character throughout MK history! But I'll be good with anything.
I was born in 94, but i still vividly remember super street fighter 2, and mortal kombat because my brother was 6 and dabbling in fighting games from the early half of the decade. My memories if my life started with fighting games.
🙋🏻♂️ I too was there when the first Mortal Kombat game came to my local bowling alley… (Yes, I’m getting up there. 44 years young. Lol ) It was a fun time! No Internet, no way to know what the moves, the fatalities were, all experimentation and word-of-mouth! As well as hoping that the next issue of “Electronic Gaming Monthly” maybe had a move list, etc…
