As I understand it, the theory behind digital camo is that it is good at breaking up the outline of soldiers on satellite images, and high altitude recon planes cameras and the like. What a shame that none of the opponents US forces fought in that period had access to surveillance gear more advanced than a Viewmaster, as a rule

also, after they have "AFIXED BAYONETS" and the melee begins, it is really easy to see who is on your side and who is not, so that is helpful too!

Colin Baxter Yeah, I think was the point of the bright uniforms. With all the gunpowder smoke and large melees, you'd need to be able to see your comrades at a glance. Actually, sounds like UCP would fit right in with the bright Early Modern military uniforms.

Its good to know who your allies are, until ypu realize the enemy knows who their enemies are as well, and are less likely to hit allies. And since you stick out like a sore thumb, you can get shot at by enemies who look closer like the general populi, or the area around you. Military wise, prety sure the brittish were stronger than americans, but just lost in terms of environment. I might be way wrong, but still, sticking out is horrible as a soldier, especially in battle.

To be fair no one was innocent on that part, France had pure white jackets on theirs and the Spanish had yellow. The only one that had uniforms that was useful Camo before the Revolution was the Prussians since theirs was dark blue instead of bright blue like the Dutch had. I think Zach would be happy to hear about that part

Yup, and in fact I think the multicam they tested was the best out of all the camos. Then UCP came.... and now after replacing the UCP they’re literally using the same multicam that they tested, just slightly different.

@@MD_Films Scorpion W2 (what became Multicam and then OCP) ranked in 3rd place, out of 4. It was rated best in woodland settings, but not as well in desert and urban environments. A pattern called "Desert Brush" was rated the best. What's also kinda funny is that before everyone realized UCP was just recolored MARPAT, the Army tried to say it was derived from the experimental pattern "Urban Track". This was the *worst* performing of the final four, and was mostly suited for nighttime. If that actually were the case, why in the hell did they pick the worst of the four? What sense does that make? Army strong and Army stupid...

Look for the two things that aren’t the same colour, the guy's skin, and his boots.

The neck gave him away. Really shows the value for UCP to be used in a department store or your grandma's living room. Ya know, the popular places for conventional warfare.

The Swedish M90 pattern is pure sex, but I might be biased.

Personally my favorite camo pattern is Desert All Over Brush

The Army finally adopted a good camouflage pattern a few years ago.

@@CplSnafu No. After ww2 the west german military used a solid oliv combat suit. Camoflage was thout of as a thing of the warsow packt. We adobted flecktarn some time in the later half of the cold war

Flektarn has been in use in the German military since WWII, just not as a standard pattern. It was used largely by specialty units, as was the case with most nations at the time anyways.

Man wasn't it great that the people the army was fighting when they had that pattern didn't have any satellites thereby negating the only good thing the camo did and just making soldiers stick out like a sore thumb.

But the camo very much works. And our field flags being just green or brown for the desert type means we blend very well.

I think he means 'Erbsentarn' (pea camo), which does look quite similar to Flecktarn.

To be fair, most of the younger generations of the US, which I believe would include Mike and Zach are switching to tea over coffee. Crumpets though are gonna be a hard no for us though.

That makes way more sense than expensive camo that doesn't actually hide you, because it actually does it's intended job.

@@bthsr7113 And back then camo would have been largely useless. Rifled muskets existed and there were specialized units that used them (contrary to the "America invented snipers" myth) paired with very effective skirmisher tactics, but they were expensive to make, so the bulk of the army of any nation would be mostly smoothbore muskets, which demanded massed formations to get the most out of them.

Well, it really shows that the problem with the US goverment isn't the funding, but rather how much of that funding doesn't go to weed out incompetence. Same goes for the police. They need to spend more money on weeding out incompence

@@pyryhartikainen608 I agree wholeheartedly I'm a big fan of CADPAT/MARPAT derivatives, such as the Digital Woodland Pattern Used by Mil-Tec. It improves upon MARPAT by adding a stony segment
