@@VJamrita yep, if it was black or brown like you would expect the backgrounds would have been too dark and not contrast with the darkly dressed characters and pink was found to be the best colour for the black and white look they needed.
My rebellious phase involved learning to sing classically (think opera style) when my father wanted me to be a country singer. Kids tailor rebellion to the parents, so this makes absolute sense.
How prophetic that the Addamses would think the boy scouts to be a despicable org. And today the run commercials for those unfortunate children that were molested by those trusting pillars of society I pray that all those guilty of molestation were and will be sentenced to the maximum amount in this life thankfully the true punishment will be on judgement day
@@LadyLenaki yup. Its like how the hippie generation were a response to conservative and traditional values from an idealized american generation but then the hippies had kids and they want to have fun with other things besides free love and drugs like being a highroller and buying the latest thing
Well, be honest it is the BSA, and that one is especially more connected with militarism, sexism, weird religions, child molestation, inadequate supervision, and considering thinking you are a large bird of prey as a good thing, than your average Scouting association, it is one thing to be a scout, but belonging a scouting association with the same initialism as a motorbike brand? The Addams Family is not that weird.
Gotta love the way that instead of yelling at him and grounding him they try to reason with him , speak to him , see if he is feeling alright and even call a professional to make sure they don’t do something bad, even when they identify this behavior as terrible, weird and intolerable. They are amazing parents
What's wrong about children playing with dynamite caps and having grown lions and octopuses to have fun with. What boy wouldn't dream of wrecking trains and inventing a disintegrator gun...
I actually love that even with the Addams family's 'oddness' they are pretty much the ideal family. You have the Mam and Dad who are still clearly very much in love and are also active, loving parents. Two sweet kids, a comfortable home with a butler and also have close and supportive extended family living with them.
Well, that's kind of the point of them isn't it? Back in the 50s people were so obsessed with having a seemingly perfect family that looked good. This family spends less time thinking about how other people think of them and focus more time on actually being a good family.
i would have Loved having them for my folks. puberty would have been Sooo much easier to cope with with them around... no matter how weird or messed up you got in the head, they would have been there to handle it by being even crazier.
I guess the opposite of something still has to be similar in some ways. The opposite of “black” can’t be “monkey wrench”. So the opposite of the loving nuclear ideal family is the loving nuclear sadistic family.
Most TV broadcasts back in the 1960s (up until 1966 when the first network, NBC, went full-color) were in B&W. Color costs quite a bit more and it made no sense to do color broadcast when at least 85% of the TV sets were B&W sets. Color sets didn't overtake B&W TV set sales until the early 1970s!
I love how Gomez and morticia clearly love and respect eachother and when morticia isn't in the mood for adult fun time he listens to her and respects her instead of pushing
King of consent! Even tho Gomez is crazy about Morticia, she says she's not in the mood cause she's thinking about Pugsly he backs off. Ahead of his time.
Morticia and Gomez are relationship goals!!! Also, this is a relatively healthy family. Other than the blatent disregard for safety, they genuinely care about each other and worry for their safety. They don't scream or yell. They take measured and empathetic responses to help their kids.
People who want an abusive relationship say they want to be Joker and Harley. People who want a healthy and happy relationship say they want to be like Gomez and Morticia.
Id want the 90s movie version of them though. Gomez seems way more loving and doting to mortifica. Imo it seems like this Gomez more-so lusts Morticia and not so much loves her.
sounds cool to me. i would have been asking if we could have a camp out during the storm myself. imagine... having a hot dog on a stick and roasting it on the flames of where the lightening struck. Yum!
@@melissacooper4282 i sort of did with one or two things but what offset me was seeing how other kids made bad choices and getting pregnant then being forced to marry at such a young age not to mention the court system is bias against males.
Watching Tish at the mirror pondering “I wonder if blondes really do have more fun” makes it all the more endearing when the actress playing her was a natural blonde!
another hilarious meta joke in the series was the time Morticia was attempting to think up a fake surname so she could sell shares without the broker knowing her real identity.Morticia "how about Jones?" Fester"naw it sounds too fake" lol
They are so adorable! Just the little things that they do make my heart melt. Like when Morticia goes to hold Gomez's hand or when Gomez puts his hands on her waist to gold her close. It makes my heart so happy to see two parents so obviously in love with a very healthy relationship. They have conflicts as well as different opinions on certain things but they treat their marriage as it should be. A team. Its very refreshing to see.
Kelley Hawley My daughters name is Kelly so since you posted such a great post I had to respond. I mean he actually thought he had a choice right?? LOL cracks me up!
@@ManInTheBigHat nowadays the show would be under attack for animal cruelty the way pugsly held onto the puppy as he was carried away and under attack for racism desplaying nooses.
This is subtly one of the greater episodes. While typically the formula will involve a guest gradually learning that the Addams are creepy and kooky, they keep the situational irony with Dr. Black going throughout. Black mistakes Pugsley's preferred behaviors as unpreferred and vice-versa, but by failing what he sets out to do, actually succeeds in what the Addams family is looking to accomplish. The misunderstanding is stretched almost to breaking point, but it never results in the typical Addams trope of the visitor being horrified by the Addams family and scoffing angrily. Beautifully executed, modern comedy could take a lesson.
Agreed! I was curious how long they could take the gag of the Addams and dr. Adams seeing different things while agreeing on something! The premise is tricky, but how they handled the story was really brilliant.
I believe this was the idea that could work amazingly with a psychologist as a character in the show. Not showing judgment towards a patient, let alone an individual/family as it’s part of their job to show a form of understanding for the better. To the Addams, it’s having a spirited and outgoing son with explosive creativity.
I love how the psychiatrist is shown as helping Pugsley realize what he likes the most completely regardless of what the doctor's own perceptions are. Such a nice professional.
Emmanuel Goldstein You can catch the end of the intro, and by extension the song, at the beginning. Also, the first two uploads like this used a different intro with the classic bit and the snapping. Maybe it’s because of the conception that people don’t watch intros anymore(although you prove that not true)
In this world filled with divorce cases, misunderstanding and clashing ego .. Morticia and Gomez are true couple goals... Loving and keeping each other entertained while taking up responsibility of three kids equally... 😍
I remember at the end of the TV movie Halloween With The New Addams Family that Gomez and Morticia were talking about marriage and divorce. Gomez said something along the lines like if divorce don't work then marriage!
In this series in 1965 they have only two kids a boy and a girl. Just the word Pubert would not have been allowed then because of the Hayes Code in effect since the middle 30's.
I can't get over how different Carolyn Jones and John Astin are from Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia but the same key parts of Morticia and Gomez are there from both pairs of actors - they're deeply, PASSIONATELY in love with each other and are devoted to being good parents to their children. Marriage goals.
I think there’s an interesting parallel between this and the baby in addams’ family values. Here when presented with normalcy, it’s not only worrisome, but it’s deplorable. It means pugsley is a “problem child.” In the film, it concerns them, but they don’t see the harm in it. They’re disappointed, but they let their child be themselves. Although people love to hail the Addams’ as the pinnacle of unconditional acceptance, which they are in several portrayals, I feel their distain for the “normal” here feels a little more true to the original comic illustrations.
Old post but I think you've got the right of it; they indulge because there really isn't anything else that can be done; they love their kids too much to tell them to stop doing what they want. It's ironic that the newest movie is the example that has Morticia showing outright intolerance to her kid's face--and that is the big difference. Here and in Values, they don't like it but they go along with it and don't brow-beat their kids. In the animated film, Morticia not only dislikes it but makes certain Wednesday knows it.

Gomez really loves her. He kisses her through the whole show. I love that too but then again it's a bit much. I'd have to tell my husband to go sit down somewhere we can continue later
John Astin said that Gomez and Morticia were the best adjusted couple on TV, and the only husband and wife that you could believe had a carnal relationship. 😁
I was a youngster when this show came out. It was everything I loved: Medieval torture racks, beheading dolls, the whole Gothic theme called to me. Of course, I instantly fell in love with the most beautiful woman on television (I certainly wasn't the only one). Unsurprisingly, when I began dating, I was a sucker for pale women with long midnight hair - but no one measured up and I got over that fetish. Poor Caroline's ashes share a crypt with her mothers, about 5 miles from me. About every other year or so I stop to pay my respects, and there are always cards, poems, drooping plants, black roses, and the obligatory clipped and upended rose stalks. Makes me smile that so many still care for our coal black-hair beauty.
Well, I actually was infatuated with Wednsday, and as the character matured, I fell in love with her. Morticia was always like a mother figure to me. .Then I got older, .and I fell in love with Morticia.. But none of the Gothic girls did it for me. Then I met my wife. 18. She was perfect! Sweet, odd, fearless, and strong. Kind of a mix between the 1977 Wednsday and young Morticia. After my wife became a mother, she became more like Morticia. I guess what I am saying is: what makes Morticia so special is her matronly demeanor and years of matrimony, which is where we first saw her. So find an adult Wednsday, and maybe the rest will come🖤
Even though I was a senior in high school I never missed this show. The great love between Gomez and Morticia was inspirational. I checked Patty Duke and John Austin in when they vacationed in Yosemite. I did not acknowledge their star status and they were just the nicest couple.
I would love to hang out with The Addams Family. I know it's just a TV show but it always makes me feel so sorry for them nobody wants to stay. They just want friends.
To think uncle Fester even suggested them learning to love the little puppy! They really love each other and respect their kids, that's so heart-warming to watch
A lot of people these days don't realize the Addams Family comes directly from a series of cartoons by Charles Addams published in the New Yorker magazine, and this episode is lifted directly from one of those classic cartoons.

Pugsley was right in not joining the Scouts and his parents were right in being more than concerned, given the organization's latter, and on going, scandals. The Addams home indeed provided a much more wholesome environment for the lad.
i happened to watch this after the 2019 movie. lucky click! i hated how the movie handled this type of situation, the parents just acted like normie parents and it was very frustrating. this was refreshing to see
Originally, Lurch was not intended to talk but Ted ad-libbed during rehearsal once and the producers lived his voice so gave him several lines in each episode. Ted also played "Thing" most of the time!
i think its great that they recognize pugsley isnt doing anything wrong, they just don't know what it is he's doing and are worried for him rather than frustrated
I love the way they are all in with their characters. Not at all like a parody. John Astin and Carolyn Jones had a genuine affection for each other. Carolyn was class act and the cast members remember her as a sweet lady. To bad she passed away to soon.
You know what? The kids seem to be more tolerant of normal things than their parents. Wednesday used to watch the other kids play and wanted to join them and Pugsley wanted to join the boy scouts.
