Heck, there are a few routines in this movie that don't contribute to the plot. There's that "Beautiful Girl" song that doesn't mean anything and the entire "Broadway Melody" sequence is cool but it gets shrugged off the instant it's over. Well, plus the movie's set in 1927 but is anachronistically full of songs from the 1930s. The plot hole that always bugged me most, though, is the movie-within-the-movie, "The Dancing Cavalier", salvaged from the failed period piece "The Dueling Cavalier" which was a disaster when they tried to change it from a silent movie to a talkie. When the characters discuss how to retool "Dueling" into "Dancing" they figure they'll add a framing device of a modern dancer who gets hits in the head with a sandbag and has a dream of being in Renaissance France, letting them use the period sets and costumes. When we finally get to see the end of "The Duelling Cavalier", the characters are _still_ in Renaissance France; there's no "waking up" scene to return to the modern framing device. What is this, a precursor to _Inception_ ? Does he return to reality or not? Aagh!
@@bryanekers3472 what bugs me is that they used the actress who played Lena’s own voice in the ‘film’, which is fine except that the whole point is that Debbie’s character is supposed to be dubbing her and the two of them sound nothing alike! Not that I really care because it’s a fun movie to watch whether it makes sense or not
@@bronxjar8441 gosh, they are both great. not even sure what one means by "technical". unless that means doing something the way that it is more commonly taught. i love this scene, and both of them. i do think that ray bolger is better than both of these guys, in terms of raw skill. it has often been said that the best partner that kelly and o'connor ever had, were each other. i second that !!
@@bronxjar8441 O'Connor admitted that when they were filming that scene he found himself constantly looking to Kelley, whom he said was the superior technician. If you slow it down, you can see all the head turns he makes to look at Kelley's feet. But they were both amazing in their own right.
Whenever I see this, I just compare it to when you and your best friend are bored to tears in class and you try anything to make the lesson more interesting.
Kelly and O'Connor two different styles yet perfectly compliments each other's, O'Connor is about speed and flare Kelly is more style and technique love them both
@@blpalv15 indeed! that song was perfectly suited to o'connors particular skill and style, as much as kelly's were for the title song. two distinct, but undeniable, masters of the craft.
@@poppybell8217 not an American but I'm pretty sure malls are for people who need to buy something and that having to buy something is no indication of your mental faculties. in other words you're being a judgemental dick.
Just saw this movie for the first time and this scene is incredible...I can see why Gene Kelly was Michael Jackson's biggest influence and Donald O'Connor is awesome...He looks like he's having so much fun. I can't get this song out of my head...I'm a 50 year old black guy who grew up on R and B, Rap, Rock and Jazz...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
@@Wolffman109 Singing wise Michael’s biggest influences were Jackie Wilson and Frankie Lymon. Dancing was James Brown and the Temptations. I don’t know where they got this from. I just watched this scene cause of the Moses Cartoon.
This is just the best shit ever, the things they can do with their bodies is insane, and they look like they’re having a total blast doing it. We need more purely happy and fun movies like this, especially after the past year! Watched this the other day and just smiled the whole way through
I'd love to see a movie be made that doesn't have some crazy what if attached to it. I don't need the world to be ending, someone being suicidal, or a drunken parent not approving. Let me see some middle aged guy get a call from his old classmates saying that they're gonna try to do their old dance routine for their High School reunion. Remember the drummer from Phineas & Ferb? Give this guy the same reason for falling out on dancing. Woke up one day and just couldn't feel the beat anymore. He just assumed that he had gotten too old for it all. Have the world a bit faded with it as he goes along with life. Have him go off to pick up his nephew from school, see a kid there trying to prove to his friends that he can dance, but just struggling. He can walk over, offer some pointers. When the kid calls him out, I wanna see him click his heels against the concrete, and with each one, have the world be a bit more saturated. People lose the blank expressions, show some emotion. Hell, have the kids say his dancing is lame, let the world fade once more, but once he walks off a bit, have it comes back as he starts to remember the fun he had. Have him go through life, slowly letting everything come back from it's grey dullness to it's colorful existence he knew it having, I wanna see this guy just bring in a world of wholesome emotions to everything around him. Let him see that it wasn't anything other than himself that was letting the emotion leave. A journey of this man rediscovering the passion he had as a youth, seeing the world once again through those hope filled eyes, as that wholesome energy radiates off of him and effects everyone he meets. And then, he gets the call. Nobody wants to join in on it. That's awful! Let him go find his old dancing squad, bring them all back to that same level of emotion. God, the actors I'd of loved to have seen in something like that. If Chris Farley were still alive, have him be one of the members who thought he couldn't dance anymore because people thought he was too fat, let this guy fill him up with the energy he needs to just give it all in and start feeling the music blaring through his body. I mean, Hell, you got so many characters you could play off of in a scene like that. Have one be a barber, have the music slowly come in, as the dialogue turns into the customers becoming a Barbershop Quartet, singing along to guide him. Construction worker, the rhythm starting with the moving of the tools, the machines, you get to see as his dancing has him dodge along the construction work, almost like this is natural, like he lives in some cartoon world where you just naturally avoid all accidents. One guy could be a mental ward, suffering from amnesia. His family hasn't been sure on how to jog his memory. have them turn on his old tapes, the ones they used to practice to, let the team guide him in the movements as he slowly begins to remember it, slowly but surely catching up, all the while reciting memories. This is what I want. Wholesomeness. Funniness. I want to be unable to stop laughing as I watch on, enjoying it with everyone I can. I don't need a kidnapped daughter, or a whole 20 minutes of them being depressed. I want something that when I feel sad, or tired from a long day at work, that I can turn this on and get a smile on my face, and remember that things will be alright.
I really miss this style of movie musical. Less about making the songs seems like the world, and more about having numbers that compliment the story and bring fun. Not to mention the raw triple threat talent. This movie will always have its place in the archives
Talent, I don't see why there isn't movies like this anymore. Anyone from any era can appreciate great performances like this. Me being born in 98 I know I sure do
Big production musicals crashed around the time of Hello, Dolly and studios have been hesitant to return to them. You'll get a CATS or a RENT or a Chicago every now and then, but they have to be really, really popular Broadway shows in order to get the attention. I'm not a big variety fan myself. I enjoy musicals where the songs are relevant to the plot and the solos are brief. This movie is from the style of musicals where the plot is an excuse to string a bunch of song and dance numbers together, and if the point is the song and dance numbers, having a story is just going to mean that everything that isn't developing the story I'm going to find boring or frustrating. For every "Moses Supposes", there are a dozen pointless showstoppers that don't have the redeeming spirit of fun this song does.
Singin' in the Rain was why I pestered my mom until she let me take tap lessons when I was 7. I had all the songs memorized. It'll always be special to me.
Though there must have been several takes but extremely impressive that they both could do the same at the same time and this fast, it looks so easy for them too.
No one can ever top Gene Kelly dancing acting or singing!!!!! Gene Kelly never fails to impress me because he is litterlary a TRUE Hollywood legend!!!!!! :)
Donald O'Connor has a more lively pep full oomph and excitement, while Gene Kelly is more cool and collected with style and flare, phenomenal scene, love them both. ❤️❤️❤️
The compliment the other so well O’Connor is funny and a bit rough while Kelly is elegant and dramatic. They both just having a blast together. It’s a crime that it took forever before Kelly got credit for the choreography in this movie
Love how almost all of the numbers in the movie are just for the sake of it rather than guiding the movie, it feels like the characters truly love music and dancing and it just comes from the bottom of their hearts, the whole "Gotta dance" and "Broadway melody" are probably two of the most amazing numbers in the history of musicals and yet they both could have been released as individual sessions given how much of nothing they actaully have to do with the plot
I love this scene so so much it's just really sweet, and their technique is astonishing and I don't know, just a charming little dance about moses and his toeses
Good luck finding talent like this today. These two broke the mold when it comes to dancing talent along with Debbie Reynolds and dancers like Fred Astaire.
Strong improvisation, this is given once in a lifetime... The guys did a great job.👍👍👍No one will do it like them... It's a masterpiece for eternity.👍👍😊😊😊
Just ooodles and oodles of pure talent exuding from these two fellas. Great talent, but it doesn’t take itself seriously. This … THIS is quality entertainment. They don’t make ‘em like they used to.
Donald OConnor is one of a very few people who can keep up with Gene when dancing. This scene is one the best in a great movie. But my favorite from this movie is Cyd Charisse in that green dress. Wow!
I love seeing Gene and Donald dance together. The way their personalities show when they are dancing you can tell they had so much fun with this and how much respect they had for each other. Donald O’Connor seems like the hyper and wild type of friend that always gets into crazy antics and Gene Kelly seems like the calmer friend who laughs at his friend’s jokes and joins in on his friend’s antics. I love Gene Kelly’s smoothness and style and I love Donald’s energetic and flare whenever they dance. Both different ways of dancing but both equally talented and iconic. This is definitely my favorite scene the movie because how random it is. It’s just two best friends acting silly with each other. 😂😂
In my acting class, we did the whole “Moses supposes” thing. At the time, I was an uncultured swine who hadn’t watched this musical, so when I finally did, I was like “well now I know where it comes from 😂”
That bit where they're playing with the curtains and making dramatic faces while stopping the baffled diction coach from escaping is so freaking hilarious.
A friend of mine once said that almost every song in old MGM movies is one minute of singing and then 2-5 minutes of dance break and I cannot agree more
OH My. Exactly. Donald !!! My oldest sister was 26 and danced with him in the mid 70s at a club in Des Moines Ia. He was surprised she knew who he was. Of course. singin in the rain. .
This has to be a comfort movie for me so I'm watching clips from it as i can't find the full thing anywhere its really helping after having a panic attack about me maybe having covid-19
I remember how i learned so much about english pronouciation watching this movie in english when i was a kid (hello DVD !!) ! i remember so many lines because of the sound !!! this movie made all my senses work it's crazy !
Moses supposes his toeses are roses But Moses supposes erroneously And Moses, he knowses his toeses aren´t roses As Moses supposes his toeses to be Moses supposes his toeses are roses But Moses supposes erroneously A Rose is a rose A Nose is a nose A Toese is a toese Hupidubidu! (ehehehehe) Moses supposes his toeses are roses But Moses supposes erroneously And Moses, he knowses his toeses aren´t roses As Moses supposes his toeses to be
Wild that Gene Kelly is probably 39 and still dancing this good in this movie. He truly was a great talent. It's sad to think of how terribly he treated Debbie Reynolds throughout the filming of this movie though.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
I miss this kind of Hollywood. No need for shallow sex appeal, just people with raw talent having genuine fun with it. I know that still happens sometimes, but not as often in our modern Hollywood.
I imagine this is the exact song that's getting referenced during "A Musical" from "Something Rotten". "Does it advance the plot?" "No!" "Advance character?" "Not necessarily" "Then why do it?" "Because it's entertaining!"
I am betting these two late gentlemen had heaps of fun doing this, but it would have taken heaps of pre-practising & several takes in the choreography to get this perfectamundo 👀👍❗
