Thank you for your honesty. Instead of buying an IMITATION “old school” shotgun, I’ll just buy a REAL “old school” shotgun.

Walnut, better bluing, better trigger and safety for $250 is nothing. Would pay 500 for the retrograde every day of the week. When the the action is broken in and you put a trigger spring kit in it, you have a shotgun for life. Old 500 or 870 will work too but if I find a nice one I don’t want to use it in the rain and dirt…

I bought a Mossberg 500A for $200 (new) on a loss-leader sale. It is not the same as the old school, broke-in Remington 870 Wingmasters that we used at work. But it was $200 and I hadn't seen a used 870 Wingmaster for sale for a long time! And it was $200. And it launched 12 ga 00 buck and slugs just fine. Never got that broke-in feeling, but it works. It ain't sexy, but the 00 buckshot doesn't care. So do a review of your Remington 870. Good review, and it is disappointing that Mossberg didn't deliver the "Retrograde" as advertised.

It does seem that way. I don't have quite enough hands-on experience to have an informed opinion, but more tuned-in people than myself do seem to agree that my example is particularly sloppy. Thanks for watching and commenting as always!

Very nice review. Thorough and complete. I do think that Crystal ring you hear from the 870 is that naturally acquired product of years of wracking that slide. Perhaps with the accompanying words "Get on the ground" or "Put the gun down". Or perhaps in my case, " Don't you touch my pizza "That metal is melded so well together.

Great video, I looked at this ans decided to go with a Canadian made single shot Cooey 840 for $200 CAD instead from 1962. The manufacturing quality on the newer mossberg retrograde just wasn't up to par. Keep pumping out the awesome content brother! The retrograde makes a great doorstop if you can't find a brick.

I'll take the steel receiver Remington over the 500 every time. I've heard they also make 500's in S. Texas with the Mavericks. It will set you back $800-$1000 to get a steel receiver in a Mossberg. Quality is recognized by sound and feel in firearms, and is noticeable in old 870's .

@Triangle26
@Triangle26 8 месяцев назад
It does seem like I got a particularly sloppy one. I think there is also something to be said for the how those lapses in quality really seem to stand out on a more classically oriented shotgun like the Retrograde Field. I'm far less sensitive about minor cosmetic detractions on a utility/combat oriented shotgun. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I really enjoy my Winchester model 12 pre64 for the built quality and the craftsmanship behind it. I also just purchased a Winchester 1897 120 years old. Fantastic firearms. When you pick them up, you know they are well made. I am really glad I fell on your video because I was considering a 590A1*** retrograde for the same reason as you did when you purchase your 590 retrograde. I think their marketing tactics behind the « retrograde » name does work like you’ve said. That being said, do you think that the lack of quality and craftsmanship you spoke about your 590 would still be present with the 590a1 or that it kinda fixes the issues that you reported? Thanks a lot Keep the good work Awesome videos

Thanks for posting this! I was interested in the retrograde because I love all the classic pump shotguns. But I think I'll pass on them. The price of retrogrades are north of $700 here in Canada. I would be pretty pissed spending that much coin and finding out about the shoddy build quality. I also found out the retrogrades still have a plastic trigger guard. Seriously!!?? For $700 they can't build the whole shotgun out of metal? Hard pass. I love your wingmaster by the way and would buy one of those in a heartbeat (even with scars and all).

I agree completely but the Maverick 88 is *not* made in Mexico, made just north of the border in Maverick county, I've been there.
@Triangle26
@Triangle26 16 дней назад
@@DrDemoman74 I’ve gotten quite a few comments about this, and it would seem that the truth is in between. You are right that the assembly and *some of* the manufacture takes place in Texas, and that’s terrific. That said, significant components including the barrel are manufactured in Mexico, which is not the case for the Mossberg 500.
@Triangle26

@@DrDemoman74 I should have given Maverick more credit, but calling it “US Made” is still a bridge too far.

@@Triangle26I see, interesting, I hope mossberg isn't doing anything funny because a lot of Mossberg 500s are made in Eagle Pass just like the Maverick 88, and the barrels seem identical (doesn't mean anything necessarily.) Well I didn't know others pointed out where it was "assembled" or whichever term we can agree on, otherwise I wouldn't have spammed you with more of the same comment.

I agree on your points, especially the wood. I eyeballed a retro yesterday and your description is spot on. Id rather buy a standard 500 and put some aftermarket wood on it. I put nicer looking wood in my wood stove than newer mossberg furniture.

Well said. I agree that for someone who is interested in a good-looking wood-stocked 500, the DIY route makes far more sense. Not only will it be cheaper, but it should yield a much more attractive final product.

You brought up some nice and interesting points with this review that I hadn’t thought of, so thank you for that! That being said, I disagree with your thoughts and your mild disappointment that the 500 doesn’t ring like the 870. I believe that the action differences between the two models 870 vs 500/590 are the reason one rings and the other does not. I have a CZ 612 which is a 870 copy. It’s been with me two hunting seasons now and has sub 1500 rounds through it. It rings just like the 870 in your video when racked and when the hammer is dropped. By contrast, I have a 590a1. It sounds just like the 500 in your video. Clunk clunk. No ring, just the thudding of steel and mass. Now, it has sub 800 rounds sent down its barrel. Still sounds the same as your 500. I really feel like it’s the way each action is built that contributes to the sound when each is racked, not the age or lack of quality. I could be wrong, as I have been plenty of times before. Just wanted to contribute to something to the conversation. Thanks again for taking the time to share with us! Cheers.

Did you get the 28 inch 500 retrograde field or the 18.5 inch 500 retrograde? I’m looking at getting the 500 retrograde 18.5 listed at buds gun shop for $468 right now but they have a Winchester sxp for almost half the price so😅
@Triangle26
@Triangle26 8 месяцев назад
I got the 28” Retrograde Field, but it should be exactly the same shotgun with a different barrel. Based on my experience - I’d lean towards the SXP. I took my Mossberg out on the Sporting Clays course yesterday and honestly it had a ton of malfunctions. Hopefully mine is just a lemon, but overall it’s been extremely unimpressive for the price. On a positive note, I did refinish the Retrograde furniture and it looks great now. It’s solid walnut, just a really mediocre finish.

The Maverick 88 is assembled in Maverick County, Texas, USA from US and mexican parts. The county does border Mexico, I think Eagle Pass, Tx is the county seat.
@Triangle26
@Triangle26 8 месяцев назад
That's good clarification - thanks for chiming in. I knew the Maverick line involved outsourcing to Mexico, but not that they were still assembled in the US. Rock solid shotguns, wherever they come from!
@philxcskier

That’s too bad with the fitment especially - looking similar to some SKS wood/metal interfaces. I recently got a Maverick 88, I had understood it was made in the US, but I guess it’s just assembled in the states, with Mexican and US made parts. The firearm itself was my first shotgun, so I don’t have that expectation to start with- but it feels like it’s well built and should last a long time.. yours for sure both look better with the wood though!

Pretty poor effort on the stock fitting, and careless in the extreme with the messed up grub screws. Just bought a nice second hand 500 here in Ireland, regular wood stock, choke tubes, and almost pristine condition for the equivalent of 320 dollars. Only thing missing woukd be barrel porting, but I dont think it makes much difference anywsy.
