You double shucked it after the first round. That's how the live round ended up on the ground. Maybe a little practice will help you get used to this shotgun. The Mossberg .410 pump guns can be stiff to operate when using 2 1/2" shells versus the 3" shells. I have 2 of these .410s and they are typically very reliable.
My wife and brother were not engaging the pump consistently and they were having all kinds of issues. Then I grabbed it from them and shot four rounds with no issues. They need to be man handled properly. Complete strokes and engagement.
Had a couple of Mossberg 410s. I had difficulty reassembling them after cleaning. Most people don't have those problems, but it was difficult for me. I switched to a Henry 410 lever gun with the shorter 20-inch barrel and rifle sights. The Henry operates smoothly, is reliable with a broad range of ammunition, and is easy to clean. Henrys are more expensive, though.
I bought one of those cheesy pistol grip fore stock for my 12 ga. This way I am not really applying pressure to the action bars. When moss first sold the 410 in as a defensive gun, it originally cam with a pistol grip fore end. If you can find one, try it. I bet it will solve the problem.
I have a Mossberg 500 in .410 that works flawlessly every time. It is about 14 years old though. Maybe they made them a bit better back then. Or maybe I just got a good one. Thanks for the review.
I was wanting a 590 410 because I like my 590a1 do you think polishing the bolt face will help with feeding. I have a Mossberg patrol 223 and I have to be very gentle with it for it to feed properly. I sure don’t want to get skunked again with another Mossberg product. So far the only firearm that’s 110% perfect that I own from them is my 590a1
I have been debating on getting the 410 version or the 12 gauge. I’m a skinny ass guy like 160 lbs I shot a 12 gauge g force brand and it recoiled bad what do y’all think?
A 410 can work but I think if you can find a 20 gauge, it'll be better. Less recoil than the 12 and you can find ammo. Finding 410 guns and ammo takes some wrangling right now.
A 410 is always intrigueing as they are thin, light and have low recoil. However, in pactice I've never personally found a use for one as a hunting gun. The pattern with #6 and #4 shot becomes very thin (even with a full choke choke tube) at 15-20 yards to the point where it is likely small game can escape the pattern a good amount of the time. As a defense gun for those that need a light low recoil gun it may be OK. Self defense ammo may be effective. This particular gun doesn't seem all that reliable.
I have a Shockwave .410, which is the same as the 590 but with a different stock and a shorter barrel. I never had the problems you had with yours. Something is wrong with it.
Might be the ammo mine prefers Winchester 410 Hornady or fiocchi But normally having different ammo could cause a hick up like that especially if the gun hasn't been broken in normally stick with one brand I normally buy Winchester to break in
I briefly owned a 20 gauge 590 and found while it fed well, it was very finicky when loading in shells. The 12 gauge Mossbergs are great, but I think the engineering on the other gauges isn’t great.
I tried not to be too excessive with the lube but I will try and see. I'll be keeping this one around for testing loads. I might end up having to revisit this shotgun down the road.
@@professorpewpuew OK you just clarified the issue, and it's not the gun. This slide needs to be worked fully forward and "after" it's fired, all the way back. If you pull the slide back as you pull the trigger you will cause it to hiccup which is what many of us are seeing you do in the video.
As a certified police instructor, your use of this shotgun's action would have you pulled off the line immediately for re-training on the proper usage of a shotgun.
These, especially the parkerized models require more braking in. YOUR SHORT STROKING THE SHOTGUN. PRACTICE & A LITTLE METAL WEAR WILL TURN INTO PURE RELIABILITY. Good luck with future reviews.
Paul Harrell did a video years ago with the Mossberg pump .410 and he had similar complaints about the fit, feel, and function, so it appears Mossberg pump .410's are not any good. I do like the idea of a .410 pump, can carry a lot more ammo in .410 than 12ga and still have good effect, but I would pass on a Mossberg every time.
It is a shame really. I had some high expectations going in as I advocate for the 410 when others might not. This one will be around for a while for ballistic tests. But I can't help but think what the 590 Shockwave is like. I handled some of those and they feel impressive, even though I like a stock on shotguns.
