It was a top 3 hit in 1976 barely missing the number one spot only to come back decades later to hit number one as part of the bestselling soundtrack from Guardians of the Galaxy: Fooled Around and Fell in Love credited to Elvin Bishop was sung by underrated vocalist Mickey Thomas who went on to kill it with Jefferson Starship and then just Starship in the 80s with #1 hits like WE BUILT THIS CITY and SARA… Like I indicated it’s one of those rare songs that’s credited to the guitarist instead of the singer…but WOW what a vocal performance! He sang the HELL out of this 70s ringer and he’s the one who’ll tell us the story and in the middle of it he grabs his guitarist and sings it!. The story of an all-time classic next on Professor of Rock.

I know that Rockers of a certain age know about him, but where is the modern love for the great Bob Segar, and his Silver Bullet Band? His voice is like a companion, through good times and bad, am ild Friend who understands and was there with you through it all...maybe I'm beimg too anecdotal, but that's always been the appeal, for me, of Segar as an adult...

Mickey is aging gracefully, physically lively and energetic, with some great stories to tell. When you think about how many musical stars from the ‘70s left us long ago, this is refreshing. We get to hear him sing a few notes and his voice still has its range and purity, so it’s obvious this guy has taken good care of himself.

It WAS the Elvin Bishop Group’s record. But you’re absolutely right about Mickey Thomas unfairly not being credited for that KILLER vocal. In the Dark Ages when I was the hot rock jock, whenever I played “Fooled Around…”, I’d always mention his name with the song title and the name of the band.

Remember this great classic from early 1976. I was in 8th grade. My mom was a Country Western music fan, so we mostly listened to Country Western music in the car with her. My dad's music aligned more with mine, which was top 40. Anyway, while driving to my hometown, my mom and I were going to surprise my sister by coming down to see her for the weekend. Going through Pacheco Pass in our 1972 Mercury Montego, I fell asleep. Waking up halfway through the mountain, I heard Fooled Around and Fell in Love playing on the radio. She had used one of the radio pre sets to find a radio station that would come in. Lucky break for me because the only station that would come in on our pre-set was 610 KFRC. For some reason, maybe because I wasn't being tortured by Country Western music, Fooled Around and Fell in Love just sounded so right. Today, when I hear that song, I fondly look back on the special weekend we had visiting my sister. Just yesterday, while running errands with my mom, it came on the radio. It took me right back to that weekend so long ago. It is a blessing that 47 years later, I can still hang out with my mom.

Jane is one of the most exciting songs in all of Rock and Roll in my humble opinion! From the opening distorted chords with that piano behind em I start anticipating Mickey's vocals to kick in and man , he takes that song into the stratosphere; hitting that "... GAAMMME YEAH YEAH YEAH UH UH UH , just before the guitar solo and then comes back in with the harmonies until "so plain ta SEEEEE " after what sounds like he's just improving his way soulfully leading up to that part. Such a pitifully underated vocalist. The man has some dangerous pipes! Find your way back is another stellar example. Jefferson Starship was one of the best variations of the band , if not the best (although I do like Airplane w/ Grace in the psychedelic early days straight through the bands evolution...but, Mickey is just extraordinary and, seems to be very cool as a guy right?)✌️❤️🎶🎸🙏

The Professor covers all these obscure movie references and songs from the earliest days of an artist and doesn't say anything like "What was it like working with Jefferson Starship?....Jane was such a..." I'm not sure I wanna live in a world like this one anymore; where such travesties like these happen ! WHY!? WHY DIDN'T HE MENTION JANE? WHY DIDN'T HE REFERENCE FIND YOUR WAY BACK AT LEAST!!! I remember the number 3 chart position because I used to write down the top 40s when listening to Casey Kasem. Silly Love Songs went on to be such a huge number one hit because it coincided with Paul McCartney's returned to the US on tour for the first time in 10 years. I wasn't extremely familiar with Elvin Bishop back then, although I knew the name. I just assumed that he was singing. It wasn't until years later that I found out it was Mickey Thomas, what a fantastic voice!

I saw Elvin Bishop in the late 80's in a small bar in Sunnyvale CA. When he started playing it my first thought was "I didn't know that was his song" After being fixated on the band for half the song I looked around the bar. Time pretty much stood still because no one was moving. Not even the bar staff. Everyone was fixed on Elvin and whoever the singer was at the time. Reminded me of the scene in Purple Rain, when Prince plays the title cut. The band picked up on it too. Afterward Elvin even said "yea we get to hear him sing that every night."
