To those saying "it's not a mistake" - if it's unintentional and a beginner wants to follow the original pattern, then it's a mistake (unless it says FLO or BLO"). Correcting it is good, it helps beginners prevent frustrations and not understanding why their work looks different. Besides, mistake doesn't mean bad! It can even look cute!
EXACTLY!! Thank you for pointing this out! I see so many comments like “you shouldn’t say it’s wrong” and “well I don’t think that’s a mistake” etc. If you’re trying to do a classic single crochet, and you only go through the front loop, you’re making a mistake. Plain and simple. Also, the replies are nonexistent on this comment because they know they can’t argue. 😂
Yessss, I'm a beginner and I actually couldn't tell if what I was doing was the right way, and I can say, I was making this mistake, because it was not what I wanted:)
@@chelseaegg6391the comments are on the dialogue presented in this clip. No doubt this portion of the full video also received comments about the dialogue of it.
It's a mistake when you think you're doing a single crochet in a pattern when you're really doing something else - if you know that the two aren't the same and prefer that look, that's when it's a style choice :)
Not sure why everyone is saying "it's not wrong! Just a different stitch." Yes, that's true, BLO or FLO is definitely a stitch, but when I was beginning to crochet, I was unintentionally crocheting FLO and was confused as to why my stitches and work looked off from what I was trying to follow. Yes, there's a time and place for FLO and BLO, but this is not it. She's pointing out something very helpful.
and then there's the mistake I keep making with double crochet (which i think is called single in the UK?) where I try to pull the first string through the V *and* the yarn over lmao took me ages to figure out why my stitches were shorter than in photos of similar things
The only issue is that she's clearly stating FLO/BLO is WRONG and not simply a different stitch. Yes, it's unintentional and in that instance a mistake, but it's not necessarily wrong.
@@alexisocasio6739 did you watch the full video or just paused after she said wrong and walked off into the comments? she later goes to mention it’s not wrong if done intentionally and that beginners just do it unintentionally
Yup! I started last week, and figured out after my first attempt swatch, that the only time you do front loop only is really if the pattern calls for it, or you're crocheting into your foundation chain
@@sherryp4779 if a beginner is trying to learn and follow a pattern, it's super helpful to be able to do the correct stitches. Yes it is a different style, but it's incorrect when it's unintentional :)
I completely understand where people are coming from because it’s not technically wrong to crochet like this. FLO or BLO is a technique but as she states in the video, she’s trying to help the people who are unintentionally doing this. We all know what a standard single crochet (US for me) looks like, and the texture/pattern is different from a BLO or FLO crochet. As someone who recently got into crochet, these kinds of videos are very helpful. ESPECIALLY when I’m following a pattern and not realizing that I’m not doing a proper single crochet and wondering why my project looks slightly off. I’m just writing this because there are quite a lot of people who misunderstood the video and are implying that OP is gatekeeping crochet. When in reality, they just posted an informative video.
Love stumbling onto this video this right after finishing the last square I need for my cardigan. The worst part is looking back on the video I learned from and realising that this was explicitly pointed out lmao. Oh well, it still looks fine.
Thank you! I've been crocheting as a kid and no one ever says this. I've always wondered if I was doing it wrong and I always felt so unsure. I just try to be consistent 😂
Call me crazy, but I think the end result of the "wrong way", looks pretty cool. Its a good way to mix things up a little bit if u wanna do something a little different & like maybe add some texture..
You are absolutely not crazy. I am the one who often ignore the rules or the hacks of crocheting since I do it for relaxazing, never worry what people might think about the result of my project😊
You could make it look even more ribbed if you alternate rows between front loop only and back loop only 🤭 Then you have one flat side and one ribbed side.
I wouldn't say it's a mistake. You can crochet in only backloops or front loops or between posts, whatever you're comfortable doing, and whatever your pattern tells you.
Every video I've watched hasn't said this, i was so confused why it didn't look right and it was getting me so close to stopping and I'm so glad i saw this thank you
Thank you so much! I was watching RU-vid videos while happily crocheting incorrectly. Now, I know how to do the correct way and I'll be ready for FBO as well.
Oh, thank god! I just started my first real project - and had no idea where I was supposed to be poking the needle through even after watching other videos. Thank you!!!
I've only recently realized this while crocheting, this confusion came from the fact that there is only a top loop from the origional chain, so I just kept doing the front loop. I now crochet under both loops and I feel like my stich looks nicer and is more secure
I used to do that all the time and I couldn’t figure out why mine work didn’t look like other peoples, but a few months ago I figured out how to do it the right way and tbh it looks a lot better😂
This is exactly what I did during my first attempt at crocheting. I think it’s because when you crochet into your first chain you only go through one loop so you have that in your head when you crochet into your second line
You have no idea how much this little video has helped me. Constantly losing stitches and wondering why. I watched this very short short and now my work is rectangle. THANK YOU! 😊
I made this mistake for a long time but I would always ask myself if it was wrong or just different because when I would try to find out the right way, I would see some people do it either way. But that’s a great explanation. If you’re trying to follow a pattern, you’re doing it wrong and this is a great visualization for the newbies
I fully only figured this out yesterday cos I happened to be paying attention to how a tutorial was inserting the hook and thinking.. "wait, they're going under both?" I like how only picking up one side makes my double crochets (UK) look for amigurumi since one side is hidden anyway, but noticed that after a row of trebles (UK) only using one loop of the stitch is too loose. Neat stuff! I'm kind of glad I made the mistake or I'd have never known how different the textures can be - I used the 'wrong' way to add a ribbed texture to a doll with leather armour at it looks rad :D
Tysm for sharing this knowledge! I used to crochet when I was younger & haven't touched a hook in forever! Your tips are sure to help me slay with my crochet! In the interest of growth, I would like to return the favor regarding your nail polish. You can use a qtip & nail polish remover (non-acetone or acetone depending on the type of polish you're using or prefer) to remove excess nail polish around the the nail for a more polished look! Hope this helps! Thanks again for sharing & take care! ❤️
I just corrected my niece on this last week. I had to show her the v 4 times. She rolled her eyes at me like I was making it up since she knows I taught myself when I was 9 from a book. Maybe now she'll trust that I know what I'm doing
I used to do this ALL THE TIME!! I've also seen patterns with "FLO" (Font Loop Only) and "BLO" (Back Loop Only) which shows how the difference between front, back and both loops can be used to our advantage
omg i've been wondering whether i should insert it in one side or both ever since i tried crocheting whenever the people from the videos i watch say insert it to the loop because they never clarify it😭 this advice is great!
Thank you!! I want to learn so i can make little crochet animals for my little siblings. I want to avoid as many mistakes as possible during the learning process!!
I just finished my first scarf and did it “wrong” the whole way, I honestly really like how it looks! It was a mistake that actually looks really good, I love the texture. But I wish you specified what I learned in other comments, about the pattern saying FLO or BLO. Now I know if I’m trying to follow a pattern which is which thanks to the commenters!
I have a friend who told me when I was learning to crochet, if you're consistently wrong, it still looks good 😂 I've loved learning different stitches throughout my learning and the different textures that they give 😊
I was doing this when i started and none of my crochet looked/felt correct and i couldnt figure out what i was doing wrong. I got so annoyed i quit for a year (before recently getting back into it, correctly). Thank you for making this, it could really help people!!
As a beginner, I’d really appreciate tutorial mentioning small details like this. I guess it’s about consistency when doing front/back loop. I’d find tutorials that use thicker yarn help greatly as I can see clearly where exactly to put the hook through. I find that helps and once I get a hang of it, I can do different variations and learn more.
When I was first crocheting, I would only go into the back loops. I really liked the texture it made and started crocheting like it regularly(until I learned that it isn’t the best for all patterns)
At first it was a mistake for me, but a row or two into it I figured out what was happening and how it got that way. And then I kept doing it for the rest of that piece, because I really like how it looks ^^
I like the wrong look...I'm happy I found this video as I sat staring at photos of a girls bunny balaclava for about 2 hours trying to figure out if her stitches were HDC or DC because I loved the look of it and couldn't figure it out. It was a one-loop insert :)
I've been crotcheting since I was 8. I've discovered this stitch and I love it. I'm making a blanket with it. I use the normal way for most of my projects. It's not a mistake.
I’ve picked up knitting again and had to reteach myself everything all over again. I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning that I’ve had to purposefully recreate for continuity. It turned from an unintentional mistake due to inexperience into an intentional pattern modification thanks to learning more about the craft.
Omg thank you so much. I started crocheting recently, with a book and I was soo confused why my rows don't look like in the pictures!! Now I can get the result I want and maybe later experiment with that 😊
It takes a while( and further experience) to acclimate that the “V” belongs to a stitch below. Those self taught ,like me - pre- internet- had plenty of ripping out sessions… but thats how you learn! The best videos show exactly where and how many stitches to place close up in the tutorial. They go slowly and explain as they show the work.
I taught myself to crochet and I did this with my very first project which was a doily. That was maybe 25 years ago before RU-vid but I realised my mistake once I finished. It still looked good though.
yeah, as a beginner crocheter, I had an inkling i was “wrong” and needed to stitch under both. i will say the biggest issue, is when people explain granny squares and then not explain the proper DC method. every time mine are “incorrect” because there’s nothing said on it
I insert it under both loops behind. I've never seen anyone do it that way & it's so much easier to adjust with my hands. I always go through the back, not the front. It helps with the standardized pencil grip.
For some reason when I first started crocheting I did almost an entire piece in slip stitches through the front loop only lol, would have been a life saver back then
As I thought so, it frustrates me so much where I did wrong and I realized when I watched the tutorial many times. I've been inserting my hook on the front loop instead of inserting my hook on both loops lol. Still, I learned hehe
I accidentally made 42 *ribbed* crochet squares as my first big project 🤦♀️ they were absolutely the wrong size. Haven’t picked up the project since lol
I feel like I should throw my hat into the ring on this whole mistake thing. Mistakes exist in all fields of expertise, but (at least) in creative works, mistakes are a whole hell of a lot more flexible than they usually are in more menial or “solid” tasks (think cleaning, being a doctor, engineering, etc.). In art, or really anything that can be done in any multitude of ways or any kind of way, Mistakes are just the cause of unintended results, they are not always something to avoid completely, but it's always good to be aware of them for future reference or even intentional replication. This video is a good example but a better example is glitching in art; when done unintentionally it could most certainly be considered as a mistake or even just bad luck, but if done with intent it can add some cool visuals and even improve the overall work as a whole.
i was one of the lucky few beginners who figured this out by myself thru trial and error. why dont more people teach about FLO and BLO stitches in beginner tutorials??? it would have limited so much of my frustration in the beginning! 😂
I unintentionally did this for my first amigurumi. Like others have said, it isn't wrong if it's intentional and can create cool textures, it depends on your pattern if it's correct or not!
I like the wrong way better because it’s just so cute and w fun design but if I’m making a plushie I’ll use the correct way as it’ll look weird with the wrong version
I accidentally (while doing a beginners kit) went through the back loop for the whole project instead of when it was explicitly needed. but it still came out good so it’s okay!
Crocheting into only the front/back loop are just different techniques that give your work a different texture, it's not a mistake, even if done unintentionally.
If you are thinking your doing one stitch but actually your doing another, yes it’s a mistake. Whether your ending uo with a known stitch or not, it isn’t what you were intending. If I wanted to make a blanket with the granny stitch, but had a bunch of rows with single stitch, it would’ve been a mistake. Not that both aren’t great stitches to use, it just isn’t what was intended.
