Fuck, it sucks that I can't fucking oly lift anywhere but at home since the only places that allow it where I live are god damn crossfit gyms. Don't wanna spend 300 dollars a month to get kicked in the face by some kipping idiot. Struggle is real over here.

jj lifting Not in this country. We have a soccer ball and a stupid teacher who throws the ball between children and then goes to smoke one or two. We haven't invented olympic bar in Slovenia yet.

Hank Hill Most commercial gyms aren't equipped for powerlifiting either and will give you a hard time for using chalk, being loud, having balls, etc. Hardcore Gyms are dying out and being replaced by Planet Fitness Pizza Fridays Fat Pride Gyms. The Universe will NEVER RECOVER!

Great video.I'm also practicing and developing the Olympic lifts. As regards to the SNATCH. i would be interested in you focusing on the overhead position of the snatch. The biomechanics involved in the hips and shoulders to get that sweet spot of balance to avoid the bar either falling backwards or fowards. thanks

The bar falling forward or backward is all about the pull prior to the overhead receive. It is mostly to do with the angle of the forearms which translates to the direction of the second pull. So try to keep your forearms vertical and directly over the bar as long as possible. If your forearms are facing back, you will overshoot and the bar will fall backwards and vice versa. Also try to engage the bar as soon as possible, rather than always just crushing to rock bottom of the squat and then trying to receive the bar.

Provincial level weightlifter here. Olympic lifts are really friggen' complicated. Omar, should provide more slow-motion footage so help self-coached beginners recognize the subtleties of what to do.

Can you start with the basics, though? Even things like how to correctly place your hands for the snatch grip, how the OW trainings differ from powerlifting ones, what are the exercises to start with, and do you always need a PT to get into OW.

Where is the hookgrip?!? I am stunned that I dont see Omar using the hookgrip, he should be using it on every single rep, even lightweight and especially lightweight in the beginning, training his thumb to endure the pain. Using the hookgrip is also the only way you can truly achieve triple extension because you can keep your arms relaxed troughout the pull. Weird that this was not mentioned in this because it is also one of the main issues in the snatch and clean.

I'm mostly looking forward to power clean/full clean tutorials. I still mainly do a powerlifting routine but I wanna start incorporating cleans in my routine thanks to based Rippetoe cuz of muh strength training. I know my form is trash and I haven't really bothered looking up tips or tutorials so I'll just wait for surfclam vids

I want to see a mobility video for complete front rack training. My arms from shoulder to wrist becomes dead, specifically my right arm. It's to the point where I can't grip the bar.

Hey Omar. I'm newly getting into the Oly lifts (loving them!) and notice I definitely have a lack of extension (through the hips specifically) in my Clean. I'm assuming this drill could be adapted for the Clean too, yeah? I was Snatching today and find it easier to triple extend on it because I focus on physically jumping up with the bar.

Omar! Please do a video on oly lifting for long armed people, and different body proportions. The best oly lifters are long torsoed with short arms and legs, but what about the rest of us?

Longer limber lifters tend to be better snatchers than they are cleaners since long arms works pretty well with snatching. Aramnau, Klokov, Akkaev, and Rybakou all had longer limbs and their snatches were on top of their weight class. Rybakou snatched 187 at 85 KG, weight that no lifter in the weight class ABOVE has come close to snatching. It's common to see torso and knee cave for long limbed lifters since most squatting movements will be difficult, but snatches will be a breeze

***** yeah maybe over summer. I think the main issue might be holding onto a basketball with one hand to actually dunk (I have average sized hands). If I do it, I might use a volleyball LOL.

Im 5'3 104 lbs. I play soccer and baseball and i want to become the strongest verson of myself i can be. I workout 4-5 times a week doing excerises such as squats, deadlifts, pullups, pushups, military presses, sprints, box jumps, and burpees. I also try to eat as much as i can as healthy as i can. For example, today (its 11:50 now) i ate oatmeal, a banana, a bagel, 20 almonds, and i drank tea and 4 cups of water for breakfast. At 8:30 i satrted my workout and did everything i mentioned above. Then at 10 i had Whey Protein as a snack before i had an egg sandwich and a fruit smoothie for lunch. I was wondering if what im doing is the right thing. What should i change and do differently? what different foods should i eat to gain muscle and weight? What other excercises should i do?

What is so bad about bending at the elbows during the first pull? Many elite lifters do it too and have insane snatches, normally there isn't a loss of speed. Just wondering :)

Okay, I guess this also goes for calisthenics? But from a weightlifting point of view I really don't see how you don't hit plateau very fast, if you are not in a caloric surplus. Hmm

How wide is a snatch grip? I've been playing around with the snatch (stop laughing at the back) and my hands tend to settle outside the rings (these rings being the ones your hands need to be inside of for powerlift benching). By comparison your hands are almost on the bearings, we're about the same height so I expect reach to be similar, am I holding the bar with my hands too close together? EDIT: Looking at the vid in 1080p, I'm holding the bar about a hands with closer together than you.

Jay Dub I'd imagine it's no difference than when you brace for a front squat or deadlift. Valsalva manuever or pulling the ribcage down as Chris Duffin talks about should keep you safe and neutral while snatching.

For a first attempt at the technique any ideas what kind of weight to use? I only weigh around 170lb and never used a barbell until this last week so I haven't even attempted this yet.

Can you use that jumping snatch drill for clean pulls? I tend to shorten my pull on cleans relying on my athleticism in getting under the bar. This results in a more forward position of the weight In some cases. Triple extension is my weakness. I would like to drill the triple extension to muscle memory.

Omar. I nail lifts from the hang position. It seems like every time I attempt a full snatch I miss the lift. I believe my first pull is all fucked up. Does Coach Brian have any tips?

Does this apply to the clean as well? I've literally just started with the oly lifts this week and my coach is saying that I need to get my hips under the bar more. Not tackled the snatch yet.

Lol@people thinking he should just start adding more weight straight away. If you can't lift it perfectly, you shouldn't be lifting it at all - at least for the competition lifts and partials there-of - this isn't powerlifting where you can just bully a weight up any which way, and you don't want to end up like Cal Strength where most of their lifters constantly miss/grind/have form go out the window on their lifts every session. Tatiana Kashirina's coach said the other day he can't remember the last time she missed a lift in training, which is the kind of consistency Omar should be aspiring to. Demonstrating strength isn't the same thing as developing it, particularly in such a skill-dependent sport as WL'ing.

What about a way to incorporate these lifts into other programs.. like how many days to clean from dead lifts. Or something along those lines. Just so we can incorporate it elsewhere.

t b it's pretty pointless if you're not planning on taking up weightlifting as a sport. The competition lifts are extremely technical, require hands on coaching in nearly all cases unless you want to wreck yourself and a LOT of practice (Omar's obviously got the time to train for hours a day, a luxury most don't have) if you want to do them properly, and don't hit anything that you can't hit with more basic exercises in terms of strength/size gains. The explosive/power aspect can be covered by simpler plyometric exercises that don't take 100's of hours to get proficient at. It's cool Omar is taking up the sport, because it'll give it more exposure, but I can't see many viewers getting much out of it unless it motivates them to find somewhere they can train the lifts and get coaching themselves.
